Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 4, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees.

What were some early leadership lessons for you?

Diana Mogollon, General Manager, mun2: It’s all about your team and leveraging the key dynamics to maximize their collective and individual potential. Leading and managing is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.Any great leader must learn to say less and listen more in order to be as effective and compassionate as possible.Also key are a clearly articulated vision, determined team, and persistence beyond belief, with a winning spirit. Even the impossible is possible with all of these.Finally, winners never quit and quitters never win.

Jennifer Caserta, President and General Manager, IFC: That one should never underestimate how much an organization craves leadership. It’s important to have a presence and affect a culture, that you put your method and vision out there. People feel a comfort when they have a consistent vision and goal. Sometimes there’s an inclination to pull back – but you should do the opposite.

I like a culture of transparency and clarity. When IFC went ad-supported and we refocused the brand on alternative comedy, it was important to let the team know where we were headed and why. I thought that coming together as an organization twice a year was the best way to communicate. While it was effective, what I found out is that people preferred an informal setting once a month. So we have been doing that for two years. We buy everybody pizza and at the start of that meeting we reiterate in two sentences why we’re there and what our goals are. There’s no doubt that anyone outside my door doesn’t know what my goals are.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Entertainment One hired Joey Sabella as Director of U.S. Sales. Before joining eOne, Sabella was Senior Director of International Sales and Acquisitions at GRB Entertainment.

Guggenheim Media named Dana Miller Executive Vice President, Marketing and Brand Development. Miller had been Senior Vice President, Branded Entertainment & Integrated Marketing for Prometheus Global Media.

Leopard USA, part of the Argonon group, tapped Rex Vigil to serve as Vice President of Development. Previously, Vigil had been Development Consultant for Wild Dream Films.

Christopher Brooks has joined The CW Television Network as Senior Vice President, Network Distribution. Brooks had served as Senior Vice President, West Coast Distribution for CBS Domestic Television, since 2004.

Eric Neuhaus has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Nancy Glass Productions. He was previously Director of Development.

NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal has named local broadcast television veteran Larry Olevitch President General Manager of NBC 6 South Florida/WTVJ. Olevitch previously served as Senior Vice President of Sales for NBC 6.

Barry Chamberlain has been upped to President of Sales at CBS Studios International, where he will lead global content distribution business. Chamberlain had been Executive Vice President of Sales, since 2009.

TV production company Collins Avenue has added two new executives. Former CMT development executive Melanie Moreau has been named Senior Vice President of Development. Emmy Award-winning showrunner Sandi Johnson has been hired as Vice President of Current Programming. In addition, Lindsay Schwartz has been promoted from director to Vice President of Development and named Director of Business Affairs, while Kamico Drakes  has been upped from manager to Director of Development.

Half Yard Productions has promoted Matt Ayres, previously Manager of Development, to Director of Development in the company’s Bethesda, MD office. Matt Cohn, previously a freelance casting and development producer for the company, also joins its Bethesda, MD headquarters in the newly created full-time role of Director, Talent and Casting.

CMJ Productions II Inc., has promoted Lesley Jacobi to Development Creative Director.

USA named Jeffrey Kaufman Senior Vice President, Digital. Kaufman last served as Senior Vice President of Digital Audio at Alloy Entertainment.

Mike Drach has been appointed Development Executive at 9 Story Entertainment. He was previously Marketing and Development Manager at March Entertainment.

NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution named Rich Sirop Executive Producer of The Meredith Vieira Show. Sirop was the executive producer and showrunner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from 2010 to 2013.

Original Productions (OP), a FremantleMedia Company, promoted two staffers. Lisa Behlendorf has moved up to Vice President of Production from Senior Production Accountant, and Stewart Morris has been promoted to Head of Development from Vice President of Development.

Barry Chamberlain has been promoted to President of Sales, CBS Studios International. He previously served as Executive Vice President, Sales.

Sam Reich has been named President of Big Breakfast, Electus Digital‘s new production company. Reich was most recently was President of Original Content for CollegeHumor.

Twentieth Century Fox TV promoted Howard Kurtzman to President of Business Operations, and Mark Pearson to EVP of Brand Management and Digital Media.

NBCUniversal upped Kathy Kelly-Brown from Senior Vice President, Communications in the News Group to Senior Vice President, Global Talent Booking.

Entertainment One Licensing hired Anita Gatto as Vice President of Marketing. Gatto founded New City PR.

Mikael Wallen was appointed CEO Scripted, MTG Studios. Previously, Wallen had been CEO at Yellow Bird.

Intergi Entertainment hired Josh Ettwein as Chief Technology Officer. Most recently, Ettwein had been Director of Engineering and User Experience at PRIMA Cinema.

Joanne Freed joined entertainment public relations agency 42West to spearhead its brand communications specialty. Most recently, Freed led the entertainment group at Hunter PR.

Crown Media Family Networks promoted Darren Melameth to Senior Vice President of Program Planning & Acquisitions, and Randy Pope to Senior Vice President of Programming and Development, working on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. Laurie Ferneau joins the company as Director of Programming for Scripted Series, focusing on Hallmark Channel; she had been Director of Development and Current Programming for Prospect Park.

Lisa Fischer joined UP as Executive Vice President, Advertising Sales. Previously, Fischer was Senior Vice President, Network Advertising Sales at ION Media Networks.
