What blowout? Fox‘s Sunday Super Bowl telecast scored 111.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen estimates, to beat the record held by CBS’s 2012 game (111.34 million). Halftime performer Bruno Mars did even better, topping Madonna’s 2012 record 114 million halftime viewers with 115.3 million.
As HLN EVP and GM Albie Hecht continues to remake CNN’s sister channel, he’s doing it without Showbiz Tonight. The entertainment news show, canceled after nine years, will air for the last time on Thursday, February 6. Host A.J. Hammer will remain at the net; the rest of the staff is laid off.
Former Fox News contributor Bill Kristol will now fill that role at ABC News, as a regular panelist on This Week. In October, longtime This Week panelist George Will moved to Fox News.
Mara Schiavocampo will join ABC News, where she got her start in journalism in 2004, as a New-York-based correspondent. Schiavocampo had been an anchor at Early Today on NBC and First Look on MSNBC.
Aereo, streamer-of-over-the-air-broadcasts, announced plans to launch in San Antonio on February 19. Last week, the service ran out of capacity for new New York subscribers; Forbes estimates the company has 300,000-500,000 subs in the Big Apple.
Charter is in discussions to sweeten its offer for Time Warner Cable, which rejected a $132.50/share bid, reports Reuters. Comcast would likely buy cable systems in some areas from Charter if a deal goes through.
AMC Networks builds on its international programming business with the completion of its acquisition of Chellomedia from Liberty Global for $1 billion. Chellomedia reaches more than 390 million homes in 138 countries.
The 16th Costume Designer Guild Awards take place Saturday, February 22 at the Beverly Hilton, sponsored by Lacoste. Joshua Malina (The West Wing) will host.
The Super Bowl spot from Jerry Seinfeld‘s Crackle series, Comedians Getting in Cars with Coffee, delivered on the comedian’s promise of a Seinfeld reunion (Jason Alexander and Wayne Knight were in the halftime show clip) – sort of. Seinfeld said on WFAN radio Thursday that the assembly wasn’t for a Super Bowl commercial or an episode of his Crackle show, but added, “It is not not those things either.” Full ep can be seen here.
The Seinfeld clip was number one on TiVo Research‘s top Super Bowl ads list, ranked by commercial retention relative to overall viewership. Among traditional ads, Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” came first, followed by GoDaddy‘s “Bodybuilder” and Doritos‘s “Cowboy Kid.” Budweiser’s puppy also topped Hulu Adzone’s list and USA Today’s annual ad meter rankings.
Russell Wilson, QB of Super Bowl champs Seattle Seahawks, visits CBS‘s Late Show with David Letterman tonight. It’s the tenth consecutive year the winning quarterback has made a pit stop at the CBS talker after the game.
A technical glitch forced some Time Warner Cable subscribers in the LA area to miss about an hour of the Super Bowl, including the halftime show. The problem with the feed for KTTV was resolved in time for viewers to catch a TWC ad with P. Diddy touting, “TV anywhere, anyplace, anytime.”

Nat Geo’s Brain Games explores the laws of attraction in a Valentine’s Day episode featuring experiments that put the idea of love to the test. “We all like to think that what we find attractive in other people is the result of some undefinable mystery,” exec producer Jerry Kolber tells Cynopsis. “But as you’ll discover on this episode, an awful lot of what we are drawn to is the result of codes hard-wired in your brain.” Show airs Monday, February 10 at 9:30p.
A bride-to-be gets advice from an unexpected source on the season 11 premiere of TLC‘s Say Yes to the Dress. As an injured army medic debates which gown to choose for her big day, Seth Meyers pops by to weigh in Friday, February 21 at 9p; Meyers makes his debut as host of NBC‘s Late Night three days later.
Super fans will help program TCM movies the week of April 7, in celebration of the net’s 20th anniversary. Twenty winners were chosen from among contestants who submitted videos of themselves introducing their favorite films; grand prize winner Tiffany Vazquez’s video can be seen here.
TVOne airs HelloBeautiful Interludes Live! with Toni Braxton & Babyface, on Saturday, February 8 at 10p. The special is a collaboration with Interactive One that started when the net aired the online community’s HelloBeautiful Interludes Live! with John Legend in September 2013. What’s the appeal for performers? D’Angela Proctor, SVP Programming and Production, tells Cynopsis, “The Interludes experience provides an environment conducive to intimate performances and discussions that are not often found in other venues and or performance opportunities.”
Production has begun on season two of SundanceTV drama Rectify. The Zip Works production comes back for ten eps in summer 2014.
Basketball Wives returns for season three on VH1 with three new cast members and “a surprising revelation” on Monday, February 17 at 8p.

Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap) will star in the NCIS backdoor spinoff set in New Orleans. Two-ep arc will premiere this spring; NCIS airs Tuesdays at 8p.
Jack Wagner (General Hospital) landed a two-ep arc on Hallmark‘s When Calls the Heart playing a Mountie forensic investigator starting Saturday, March 22 at 9p.
Turner Network announced Monday that TNT and TBS have partnered with screenplay database The Black List, which began accepting original episodic material in November. “As we continue to expand the original programming lineups for TNT and TBS, it’s important that we forge partnerships not only with established producers but also with fresh talent,” said TBS, TNT and TCM president and head of programming Michael Wright. It’s The Black List’s first network deal.
U.K.-based Tinopolis sets a deeper stake in the U.S. with the acquisition of reality show production company Magical Elves (Top Chef, Braxton Family Values). Founders Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz will remain onboard.
Digital media company Xaxis announced it will be acquiring media trading firm Bannerconnect. Xaxis will incorporate Bannercroft’s real time optimization platform, Bright, to its own platform.
ION acquired all four seasons of CBS crime drama Blue Bloods, plus future seasons that air on CBS, for exclusive weekday primetime syndication starting in fall 2014. WGN, fresh off its acquisition of CBS’s Elementary, acquired basic cable rights. On Friday, January 31, the Tom Selleck series delivered 12.8 million viewers to CBS, its best showing since its 2010 debut.
Hulu Plus scored SVOD rights to Elementary, allowing the online TV service to offer complete seasons of the CBS Television Studios detective drama after each season has been broadcast on CBS.
Hallmark Channel struck deals with video platform AOL On and search platform blnkx to distribute 3-to-7-minute how-to clips from Home & Family, Sunday’s Kitten Bowl highlights and online extras from its original dramas. “As viewers increasingly consume video on digital platforms, these partnerships are instrumental in raising the online profile of Hallmark Channel,” said Ed Georger, EVP, advertising sales and digital media, Crown Media Family Networks. And, of course, “opening up new streams for revenue.”
Viacom International Media Networks announced the extension of programming deals for MTV and Nick with broadcasters in the French market including MusiquePlus, VRAK TV, Tele-Quebec and YOOPA.
Breakthrough Entertainment secured deals for factual and documentary programs in Asia, Africa, Australia and the Middle East, including American Food Battle to Nat Geo People in Asia.
Nat Geo picked up two magician-centered series from U.K.-based Passion Distribution for the U.S. Four-ep The Happenings aired in the U.K. in December 2013; Dynamo: Magician Impossible has been licensed to over 200 territories.
PBS‘s Downton Abbey was the number 2 rated program opposite the Super Bowl at 9p, with a 4.9 overnight rating and 6.8 million viewers, up from 6.6 million last year. It’s the third consecutive year the period drama placed second after the ratings juggernaut.
New Girl‘s post-Super Bowl ep, with an assist from guest star Prince, delivered 25.8 million viewers and an 11.1 rating among A18-49, up 23 percent in viewers and 42 percent in the demo versus last year’s Elementary on CBS. Brooklyn Nine-Nine scored 14.8 million viewers and a 6.7 rating.
The Saturday premiere of Lifetime‘s The Gabby Douglas Story drew 3.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen, and was the most-tweeted program of the night (excluding sports). The documentary that followed, Beyond the Headlines: The Gabby Douglas Story, averaged 3.0 million viewers.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC won the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 1.7/6, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’s Undercover Boss took 8p with 1.7/6, with Fox’s Bones right behind (1.6/6). ABC’s Shark Tank surfaced to steal 9p with 2.1/7, followed by 1.8/6 for CBS’s Hawaii Five-0. ABC maintained the lead with a 1.7/5 for 20/20, versus 1.6/5 for CBS’s Blue Bloods.
