NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw announced Tuesday that in August, he was diagnosed with cancer. The former anchor, with the net since 1966, revealed he suffers from multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow. “With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future,” he said in a statement. “I remain the luckiest guy I know.”
CBS Corp. announced Wednesday that it beat earnings estimates with a record $3.9 billion in revenue, thanks in large part to a 28 percent bump from content licensing agreements. CBS recently struck deals with Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus.
Apple has plans to unveil a new Apple TV set-top box in April, sources tell Bloomberg, ready for retail by the holiday season. The company is reportedly in talks with Time Warner Cable and other partners to add video content.
Nielsen is delaying including broadband-only homes in local TV markets, amid concerns from the National Association of Broadcasters that it could understate local viewing. “Based on a thorough evaluation of the viewing patterns in broadband-only homes and an ongoing industry appeal to maintain stable measurement in local television, we have decided to exclude broadband-only TV homes from local TV measurement and ratings for the time being,” said the measurement company. Broadband-only homes will remain in national ratings.
CBS is looking for $500,000 per 30-second spot during the March 31 series finale of How I Met Your Mother, reports Variety. Advertisers who bought time on the show during the upfront paid between $300,000-$350,000.
NBC News’ Peacock Productions scored its first U.K. commission since opening its London office in October 2013. BBC Three ordered documentary Is Amanda Knox Guilty?, featuring exclusive interviews with the victim’s family and defense and prosecution lawyers and experts. The special airs Monday, February 17 at 9p, less than three weeks after an Italian judge announced a second controversial guilty verdict.
Litton Entertainment scored five Parents’ Choice Awards honoring quality children’s programming. The winners, selected by a panel of educators, scientists, artists, librarians, parents and kids, included Born to Explore with Richard Wiese; Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin; Sea Rescue; Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown and Expedition Wild.
Randy Jackson‘s return to American Idol Tuesday, February 18 in his new role as mentor isn’t the only twist the Fox singing competition has in store. During “Rush Week,” not all 30 contestants get to perform – the judges will choose who is worthy of taking the stage on Tuesday and Wednesday. The first results show on Thursday will reveal the top 10 chosen by America, plus three judges’ saves. Fans will be able to SuperVote (up to 50 votes per contestant), and those with registered Facebook accounts can vote online.
Seth Meyers‘ first guests on NBC‘s Late Night will be fellow Saturday Night Live alum Amy Poehler, Vice President Joe Biden and musical guest A Great Big World. Later in the week the host welcomes Kanye West, Brad Paisley, Kelly Ripa, Lena Dunham and John Mayer. Show debuts Monday, February 24 at 12:35a.
The bitter 100-year battle between two Arkansas clans is documented in Discovery 6-parter Clash of the Ozarks. The Leftfield Pictures production premieres Tuesday, February 25 at 10p.
TruTV‘s The Safecrackers chronicles the adventures of two Alabama locksmiths who travel the country unlocking the mysteries in abandoned safes. The American Chainsaws (ha!) Entertainment show debuts Monday, March 24 at 10p.
Satirical news show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver premieres Sunday, April 27 at 11p, announced HBO. British comedian Oliver left The Daily Show in December.
EPIX documentary The Current follows people with disabilities who discover freedom of movement through water sports. “Soul Surfer” Bethany Hamilton is featured in the show, premiering on the net Wednesday, March 12 at 8p.
Documentary Doc of the Dead, about the rise of zombies in pop culture, will premiere at the SXSW Festival on March 15, and on EPIX Saturday, March 15 at 8p, part of a “Zombie-thon” on the net that kicks off with Zombies of Mass Destruction at 6a.
E! News weighs on winter 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Secrets of Fashion Week, airing Friday, February 14 at 8p. E! was an official sponsor of the event.
CNBC entrepreneur series The Profit returns for a second season on Tuesday, February 25 at 10p.
Adult Swim is bringing back Rick and Morty for a sophomore run. The animated comedy airs Mondays at 10:30p.
Dick Van Dyke will guest on two episodes of upcoming Hallmark Channel series Signed, Sealed, Delivered, from creator and exec producer Martha Williamson (Touched by an Angel). “Martha Williamson is one of TV’s most gifted writers,” Michelle Vicary, EVP, Programming, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, tells Cynopsis. “When she said she wanted to create a role for a postal supervisor who for whatever reason moves on every couple of weeks, and that some of her best friends wanted to guest star in the role, I was intrigued. I can’t wait for TV viewers to find out which other iconic Hollywood stars will be joining the cast.” The Muse Entertainment production, in association with MoonWater Productions, premieres in April.
Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) will star in the pilot for How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad, from 20th Century Fox Television. HIMYM airs on CBS Mondays at 8.
The CW tapped John Wesley Shipp to guest on pilot The Flash. Shipp played the title role in 1990’s version.
Oscar Nunez (The Office) will play a public defender on USA‘s upcoming comedy, Benched. The series, from ABC Signature and Mark Gordon Company, landed a 12-ep order last month.
Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy) has been cast as a rough-around-the-edges detective in Fox drama project Gotham. Ben MacKenzie stars as Detective Gordon.
Entertainment Studios, Inc. announced 75 percent clearance for new court series, Justice with Judge Mablean, including group-owned television stations COX, Tribune, Media General, Nextstar, Sunbeam, Gray, Meredith, LIN, Gannett, Cordillera, Lockwood, Schurz, Scripps, Northwest Broadcasting and Journal.
MTV college net mtvU announced nominees for the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards. Arcade Fire got the most nods, with three. Artist of the Year noms went to Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Pharrell, Drake, Zedd and Disclosure. Voting opens today at Woodies.MTV.com; awards special airs Sunday, March 16 at 8p.
HBO didn’t get House of Cards, but they’ve landed David Fincher. Following his success adapting the Netflix drama from a BBC miniseries, Fincher has turned his attention to Utopia, a project at HBO based on a Channel Four show. The filmmaker will exec produce and direct; author of best-seller Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn, will write. Flynn worked with Fincher on adapting her book as a movie, due in fall 2014, which he directed.
Last Man on Earth scored a series order from Fox. The comedy, from 20 Century Fox TV and Lord Miller, was created by Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), who will star.
Fox Business News is developing a series about unconventional inheritances. The reality-based series from Tower Productions, LLC would launch in summer 2014.
NBC‘s Olympics coverage is pulling ahead. After keeping pace with numbers for the last Winter Games in Vancouver (despite the Sochi time difference handicap), Tuesday’s ratings hit 6.6/18, up 20 percent from the same night in 2010.
ABC‘s Good Morning America beat NBC‘s Today on Tuesday, the first time a network morning show carrying the Games didn’t win a morning. According to Nielsen fast nationals, GMA delivered 6.42 million total viewers to Today’s 6.01 million. Not that Today isn’t getting an Olympic bump: the week of January 27, the show averaged 5.51 million total viewers.
ABC Family‘s Switched at Birth set season highs on Monday at 8p in A18-49 (974,000/.8 rating), W18-49 (759,000/1.2) and W18-34 (516,000/1.5). The Fosters at 9p saw three-week highs in A18-34 (586,000/.9), W18-34 (525,000,1.6), W18-49 (731,000/1.10 and F12-34 (924,000/2.0).
The premiere of Hallmark Channel original movie Chance at Romance earned a 1.5 HH rating on Saturday, attracting 2.7 million unduplicated viewers and helping Hallmark rank as the number four cable net on primetime Saturday among households. New series When Calls the Heart earned a 1.4 HH rating and reached more than 2 million viewers.
Growing for the fourth week, CMT‘s Party Down South drew over 1 million total viewers, posting .77 A18-49 and 1.0 among W25-34 in Live+3.
The first season of DIY‘s Rev Run’s Renovation ranked as the third most-watched program on the net this year in P18-49 and W18-49, with DIY reporting 4.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the Run DMC star and his wife renovate their N.J. mansion.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 6.6/18, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s Olympic coverage earned 5.9/17 at 8p; CBS’s NCIS repeat took second with 1.3/4. The Games bumped up to 7.1/19 at 9p, versus 1.6/4 for Univision’s Que Vida me Robo. At 10p it was 6.9/20 for the Olympics and 1.4/4 for Univision’s Que Pobres Tan Ricos.

Groundbreaking comedian Sid Caesar died at 91. Caesar’s 1950s weekly live program, Your Show of Shows, and later Caesar’s Hour, showcased the performer’s improvisational genius; he later appeared in films and on Broadway, where he was nominated for a Tony for Little Me. Larry King announced the death on Twitter.
