With Time Warner Cable‘s annual meeting looming, Charter proposed 13 nominees to fill the company’s board of directors. Although Charter $132.50 a share bid last month for the company was rejected, “It is clear from our meetings with Time Warner Cable shareholders that there is an overwhelming desire to combine these two companies to increase Time Warner Cable’s competitiveness, grow market share and create shareholder value,” said Charter chief Tom Rutledge. Countered TWC COO Rob Marcus, “It is clear that Charter is nominating a slate of directors for the sole purpose of pressuring our board into accepting the same lowball offer that it previously considered and unanimously rejected.”
Industry leaders and learners gathered in NYC on Tuesday for the first-ever Cynopsis Media Boot Camp, an interactive immersion in ratings analysis, web and social analytics and multi-platform buying. Some highlights:
In his opening keynote, Adam Gerber, ABC‘s VP, sales development and marketing, set the tone for the day by diving into the “radical changes” roiling the industry, including “huge amounts of data” that complicate the measurement landscape. “All of this is stuff is happening much faster than the measurement companies and the researchers can keep up with,” Gerber told the crowd, “and changing the models and changing the systems is very difficult.”
In the event’s “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Ratings” session, Thomas Ziangas, SVP, research at AMC Networks said, “Nielsen data is the currency. It allows us to contextualize viewing patterns and understand duplication on other networks,” but acknowledged the need for change. “The broadcast networks are working pretty hard to make sure every eyeball is being counted,” he said. Speaking at the same session, Peter Katsingris, VP industry insights at Nielsen, noted that despite the proliferation of channels now, “People are watching the same 17 or 18 channels.”
Asked about social networking sites in a session on web analytics, PeekAnalytics’ CEO Michael Hussey said, “Twitter has a long way to go to catch up to Facebook.”
Kimberly Conon, VP/group partner, research, at UM Worldwide, spoke about the importance of being able to equate audience delivery in “apples to apples” terms during “It’s a Multi, Multi, Multi-Platform World.”
A new report from U.K. research company SecondSync challenges the assumption that TV-related Facebook activity doesn’t happen in real time. Instead, claims “Watching with Friends: How TV Drives Conversation on Facebook,” 60 percent of TV related activity occurs while the show is on the air. “Audience measurement, TV planning, content discovery, direct response advertising, TV commissioning and research are just some of the sectors that will benefit from the insights coming out of the world’s biggest social network,” said the report, which adds it will “continue to work closely with Facebook to surface actionable insights.”
The Writers Guild of America East made headway in its efforts to unionize reality shows: writers and producers from Sharp Entertainment (Doomsday Preppers, Property Wars) are now union members, following a vote count on February 3. Said WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson, “We anticipate entering a collective bargaining agreement with Sharp that includes the provisions we have won for writer-producers employed by other nonfiction TV production companies.”
Saying the deal “represents a significant next step to our strategy, further positioning Warner Bros.‘ position in global television,” CEO Kevin Tsujihara announced Warner Bros. Television Group’s proposed acquisition of the international production units of Netherlands-based Eyeworks. Price tag: in the neighborhood of $273 million.
TNT‘s Mob City is sleeping with the fishes. “Mob City was created as a three-week television event and we are incredibly proud of the six hours we presented of this remarkable drama,” said a TNT rep. “Although the ratings of the limited series haven’t warranted more hours we are eager to work with Frank Darabont again.”
The big broadcasters have a Supreme Court date with streamer-of-their-signals Aereo. Proceedings are expected to start April 22, allowing for a decision before the court adjourns for the summer.
Lexus partnered with Comcast Media 360 to launch a branded interactive television channel that showcases vehicles and offers potential customers a multi-platform experience. The channel, available across Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand platforms and online, includes original branded content. Said Teri Hill, Lexus media manager, “This partnership leverages the scale of the Comcast subscriber base while providing deeper brand engagement with Lexus product and lifestyle content.”
Golf Channel introduced wrap-around camera technology on Golf Channel Academy Tuesday, allowing a golf swing to be examined through a range of 180 degrees. The slow motion visual effect, used in the movie The Matrix, is used on NBC Sunday Night Football for replays.
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) led AskMen’s 13th annual “Top 99 Most Desirable Women” poll, for which readers were instructed to vote on “more than just sex appeal, and taking into account… character, talent and potential.” Community‘s Alison Brie came in second.
CBS made a last-minute programming switch, swapping reruns of Undercover Boss, Criminal Minds and CSI tonight for an encore of Sunday special The Beatles: The Night That Changed America – A Grammy Salute. Mike & Molly opens the night at 8p, followed by the Fab Four at 8:30p. The special’s debut on Sunday averaged 13.95 million viewers, opposite the Olympics on NBC and the season four winter premiere of ratings champ The Walking Dead on AMC. The show will still face the Games, but has a chance to snatch those zombie lovers.
Turner Classic Movies will pay tribute to the late Shirley Temple Black with a marathon of movies starring “America’s Little Darling,” starting Sunday, March 9 at 4:30p. First up: 1937’s Heidi.
Changes in the global market will be addressed by StudioCanal CEO Olivier Courson and Tandem Communications president Rola Bauer on April 8, in the keynote speech at the 2014 MIPTV market in Cannes.
Horror documentary Killer Legends explores true crimes that spawned urban legends. (Evil clowns? Check.). Two-hour special airs on Chiller Sunday, March 16 at 8p.
What’s behind the new sweepstakes for Destination America’s A Haunting, offering viewers a chance to appear on the show? “A Haunting is one of the longest-running ghost series on air and, as it enters its seventh season, the fans are as loyal and passionate as ever,” GM Marc Etkind tells Cynopsis. “Now, we’re excited to give one of those die-hard viewers the chance of a lifetime with a spine-tingling walk-on role that allows them to feel the fear all year long.” Deadline for entry: Friday, February 28.
Hugh Jackman is returning as host for Broadway’s biggest night. The Wolverine star, who manned the mic from 2003-2005, will oversee the 68th Annual Tony Awards live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 8 at 8p.
Singer/actress Idina Menzel is set to perform Oscar-nominated “Let it Go,” from the hit movie Frozen, on the Academy Awards Show, airing on ABC Sunday, March 2 at 8p.
Brett Eldredge, Justin Moore and Kip Moore are the nominees for The Academy of Country Music’s Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s. The winner will be announced on the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, airing live from Las Vegas Sunday, April 6 at 8p on CBS.

MTV ordered ten eps of cyber thriller Eye Candy, from Blumhouse Productions. Former Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice (Victorious) stars.
Lifetime is betting on ten eps of conspiracy drama The Lottery “The Lottery is one of the most provocative and original concepts we’ve ever seen,” said Lifetime EVP Rob Sharenow. “Tim Sexton’s unique dystopian thriller represents an exciting new direction for Lifetime and continues cable’s position on the leading edge of bold, high-quality scripted drama.”
Beyond Distribution acquired international rights to new technology series Manufactured, featuring the history of products like the Zippo lighter and the Vitamix blender. The show is produced by Castlewood Productions for Discovery Canada.

Nazanin Boniadi (Homeland) will recur on ABC’s Scandal, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The political drama returns Thursday, February 27 at 10p.
