Cable news net HLN, known for its coverage of high-profile crime cases, is rebranding as “the first TV network for the social media generation,” announced its president, Albie Hecht, on Monday. “Just as MTV was adopted by a disconnected target audience that was underserved by television, HLN will be the first TV home to embrace the social media generation.” The plan: curate trending news and viral events across all platforms, with headlines “ripped from the most ‘plugged-in’ sites and blogs.”
Another part of HLN’s plan: RightThisMinute. The syndicated viral video show from MagicDust Television, slated for weeknights at 10p, started airing Monday, one week after HLN canceled Showbiz Tonight. “We think RightThisMinute fits perfectly with HLN’s mission to become the TV home for the social media generation,” Phil Alvidrez, GM of MagicDust and executive in charge of production for RightThisMinute, tells Cynopsis. “We find the best videos so you don’t have to and even better, we are the only ones to tell you the stories behind them.”
Nielsen added Local Buyer Reach to its Local Insights product suite, linking proprietary Nielsen local viewing data with consumer transactions and auto registrations. “By connecting the industry standard for audience measurement with such granular consumer data,” said Matt O’Grady, EVP Managing Director of Local Media, “clients will be able to prove their ability to reach highly desirable spenders by daypart, program, and specific market.”
Guests for the first week of the Jimmy Fallon iteration of NBC‘s Tonight Show include Jerry Seinfeld, Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Kristen Wiig, Tim McGraw and First Lady Michelle Obama.
On the heels of deals for CBS’s Elementary and Blue Bloods, Hulu Plus expanded its non-exclusive licensing agreement with CBS Corp. to include 2600 episodes of other shows, including Undercover Boss, Everybody Loves Raymond, Ghost Whisperer and 7th Heaven. Also, Hulu Original Series with the Hulu Kids platform announced it has made its first acquisition with the Jim Henson Company show, Doozers.

Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen, who once played drums with Blue Man Group in Chicago, is joining NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers as the band leader, with his 8G band. “Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he’s off shooting Portlandia,” tweeted Meyers on Monday. Jazz musician and CBS News cultural correspondent Wynton Marsalis hosts the premiere of 48 Hours Presents: “The Whole Gritty City.” The documentary, broadcast on CBS Saturday, February 15 at 9p, follows the lives of five band students in New Orleans, each of whom lost someone to violence, as they prepare to play in Mardi Gras parades.
Three series launch on El Rey (the new net for “fearless, badass” content) starting Monday, February 17: Starsky & Hutch (Monday-Friday from 2p-4p), Dark Angel (Mondays and Thursdays from 4p-8p) and The X-Files (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4p-8p).
Jimmy Kimmel will try to grab some of those late night headlines by revealing the name of the cover model for Sports Illustrated’s 50th swimsuit issue Thursday, February 13 on Jimmy Kimmel Live; the model will pay a visit to the show in person on Monday, February 17. NBC talker airs at 11:35p.
HGTV debuts two real estate shows next month. Flip It to Win It, tasking experts with renovating, then flipping auctioned homes for top dollar, premieres Tuesday, March 4 at 11p. In New House, New Life, bowing Thursday, March 6 at 11p, urbanites swap the city for greener pastures. “Programs that showcase real people as they contemplate taking risks in the real estate market continue to be very popular with audiences,” said Steven Lerner, SVP, programming and development, HGTV and DIY Network.

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday that its 2015 awards will take place in Saturday, January 24 in LA. This year’s honors were on January 19.
