Simon Cowell‘s going home – and The X Factor is going off the air Stateside. In an announcement from Syco, FremantleMedia North America and FOX, Cowell said, “Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2014. So for now, I’m back to the U.K.” While viewership across the pond declined from 17 million in 2010 to 9.6 million last year without Cowell, the U.S. show’s third season hardly did gangbusters with him, averaging a 2.2 rating among A18-49 and 7 million viewers. Said Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment of FOX, “Unfortunately, there is no X Factor USA without Simon Cowell, but we understand and support his decision to focus on the international formats and on the next phase of his personal life.”
Argh! Some Xbox users got an unintended sneak peek at the mid-season premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead on Saturday morning, ahead of the much-pirated zombie drama’s scheduled Sunday showing. The error was fixed quickly, after word of the error spread online. Dead’s season four premiere in October – which also got an accidental early airing, on Google Play – scored a record-breaking 16.1 million viewers and 10.4 million among A18-49. The series is back on Sundays at 9p.
CNN‘s AC360 Later is off the air for good. The 10p news talker hosted by Anderson Cooper, launched in September as a companion to Cooper’s AC360, was often preempted during its brief run.
TNT ordered six more episodes of breakout docu-series Cold Justice. The Wolf Films/Magical Elves crime show is averaging 1.8 million viewers Live+3 in its second season, and up 25 percent among A18-49 from its season one. Justice airs Fridays at 8p.
Cosmos: A Space Odyssey will have the largest global launch ever for a television series. The 13-part science series from Ann Druyan and Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) will premiere on National Geographic‘s 90 channels in 180 countries as well as 120 Fox-branded channels in 125 countries, immediately after its U.S. premiere Sunday, March 9 on Fox and Monday, March 10 on National Geographic channels.
Music Choice is focusing on females as it honors Black History Month. Through February 28, the net’s airing videos from hot women performers, as well as episodes of emerging artist series Primed focusing on Bridget Kelly (February 3), American Idol winner Candice Glover (February 10) and Algebra Blessett (February 17).
Veria Living has expanded VLC, the net’s live, 15-minute programming blocks, into a live, one-hour daily lifestyle talk show with a studio audience.“The response from viewers to VLC was overwhelming,” said Eric Sherman, Veria Living’s new CEO. “We are expanding the original series to give viewers more of what they want – ‘supersized’ segments with even more food, fashion, fitness, beauty and health tips.” Show starts today, Monday February 10 at 1p.

AMC greenlit a docu-series chronicling the first season of the LA KISS arena football league team, owned by the rock group’s Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. The 10-ep, as-yet-untitled series from Thinkfactory Media debuts this summer.

NBC‘s Olympics topped Thursday night with pre-Opening Ceremony figure skating, skiing and snowboarding, but the Games didn’t necessarily tear viewers from their regular programming. CBS‘s Big Bang Theory and The Millers held onto week-prior A18-49 Nielsen ratings of 5.2 and 2.6, while CW’s Reign maintained a .6. Telemundo‘s Reina Sur got a one tenth uptick, to .8.
With an Olympics lead-in and plenty of press coverage, Jay Leno‘s final night on The Tonight Show drew 14.6 million viewers, the fourth largest audience ever and largest since 1998. Among A18-49, the show scored a 3.8 rating, versus the .9 season average.
The Olympics opening ceremony Friday night delivered 31.7 million viewers to NBC. The 2010 Games in Vancouver topped that with 32.6 million, but among tape-delayed Winter Games openers, it was the second most-watched after Lillehammer (33.8 million) in 1994.
After the Sochi spectacle Friday night, Jimmy Fallon‘s last outing as host of NBC‘s Late Night averaged a 2.2 rating in A18-49 and 6.6 million viewers, the best since David Letterman bid adieu to 7.5 million Late Night viewers in 1993.
Bravo‘s Top Chef finale on Wednesday delivered 1.7 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, a 13 percent uptick from the week prior and the highest-rated episode of the season in all key demos.
A tweaked format earned MTV’s Real World: Ex-Plosion its highest-rated episode in three seasons. On Wednesday, exes of the housemates moved in, drawing 1.5 million viewers and making the reality show the top program at 10p across television among W12-34.
Thursday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 6.0/17 for its first night of Olympics coverage, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen, leading the field in every hour. At 8p the Games scored 6.0/17 versus a 3.9/11 average for CBS’s The Big Bang Theory and The Millers. At 9p, it was Olympics 6.3/17, CBS 1.8/5 for The Crazy Ones and Two and a Half Men. Opposite the Olympics (5.7/16) at 10p, CBS’s Elementary earned 1.8/5.
