A new Nielsen study suggests advertising seen on nets with “highly loyal” audiences has a significant impact on purchasing behavior. The custom study for Bravo (ranked number two in viewer loyalty among A18-49, after USA) measured 75 cable entertainment nets; Nielsen is developing a standardized measurement for loyalty for broadcast and cable.
Sasheer Zamata has been tapped as the first female African American performer on Saturday Night Live in five years, Deadline was first to report. A talent search followed complaints last fall about the cast’s lack of diversity – SNL even poked fun at itself in a November skit with Kerry Washington (Scandal) scrambling to play all the black female roles. Zamata makes her debut January 18.
Before long you can toss your Roku box – if you buy a new television with Roku software baked in. “Roku TV removes all of the complicated layers and menus, and unnecessary features and settings that plague smart TVs today,” said Roku founder Anthony Wood of the new sets, to be manufactured by TCL and Hisense later this year, in a Roku blog post. Instead? “A Roku home screen that brings together all content sources.”
Dish Network introduced Super Joey at the Consumer Electronics Show, an improvement on the 2012 original set top box that, working with the Hopper DVR, can record eight shows at once (up from six). The company also announced Wireless Joey, “ideal for rooms without coaxial cable.”
Not so ideal? Director Michael Bay as pitchman. Bay was supposed to talk TV for Samsung at CES, but he didn’t do much talking. After he introduced the electronic giant’s 150-inch curved TV, Bay muttered a few words, then said, “I’m sorry… ” and left the stage, apparently having lost his place on the teleprompter.

Stand-up comedian and SNL alum Jim Breuer has joined AXS TV‘s Gotham Comedy Live as consulting producer. “Not only does he have a clear grasp of what resonates with audiences today,” said the net’s SVP of programming and development Michele M. Dix, “but he represents our channel’s brand with his love and knowledge of rock music.” Season three launches Thursday, January 9 at 10p.
The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles will include performances by reunited-for-one-night Eurythmics Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, a duet from Alicia Keys and John Legend, John Mayer and Keith Urban performing together and Maroon 5.
