NBC‘s low-rated Thursday comedy Sean Saves the World has ceased production, 14 episodes into its 18-ep order. Last Thursday, the show earned a .7/2 rating; an SNL clips show airs in its time slot tonight. “Looking forward to Obama’s minimum wage increase to $10/hr,” tweeted series star Sean Hayes after the news broke.

 IN THE NEWS

Comcast reported an increase in subscribers in the fourth quarter for the first time in six years. The cable provider added 43,000 new subs, versus a loss of 129,000 in Q3. “Cable’s operating metrics improved across video, high-speed Internet and voice for both the fourth quarter and full year,” said CEO Brian Roberts.

E! late night talk show Chelsea Lately will simulcast on radio’s Raw Dog SiriusXM Comedy Hits channel starting Tuesday, February 18. President of E! Suzanne Kolb cited the net’s “ongoing efforts to provide fans new ways to engage with our shows across all platforms” as the reason for the move. The 11p show will also be available through the SiriusXM app and online at siriusxm.com.

GroupM is creating a new division, Multicultural Marketing Analytics, “dedicated to unearthing consumer insight and measuring the impact of multicultural media investments,” said Gonzalo Del Fa, president of GroupM Multicultural.

SUPER BOWL ROUNDUP

E! is also teaming with Bud Light for Super Bowl party coverage. The net will report from the Bud Light Hotel (aka a 4028-person Norwegian Getaway cruise ship, docked along NYC’s West Side), offering fans a multi-platform experience covering concerts, celebrity interviews and “the hottest parties.” Said Blaise D’Sylva, VP of sports, media and entertainment marketing, Anheuser-Busch, “Our partnership with E! will allow us to take the Bud Light Hotel experience and share it with fans across the country.”

The music of Bob Dylan will be featured in a Super Bowl commercial for Chobani, and the man himself will appear in an ad for Chrysler, according to the Hollywood Reporter. While the music legend is hardly high profile, he has appeared in commercials before, for brands including Pepsi, Cadillac and Victoria’s Secret.

SodaStream wasn’t happy about editing its Super Bowl ad, which included a mention of rival (and Super Bowl halftime sponsor) Pepsi. “This is the kind of stuff that happens in China,” SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum told USA Today, after being asked to cut the Pepsi reference. Silver lining? The controversy has pushed viewing of the uncut ad on the company’s YouTube site through the roof.

In a new survey from research firm Leger, 71 percent of people polled said they planned to watch the Super Bowl – and one quarter are more interested in the commercials than the game. Nearly one-quarter of the 1000 respondents predict Budweiser will have the best ad. (Spoiler alert? click here.)

 COMING UP

CNN is airing a special, Jay Leno: Mr. Comedy, the week before the Tonight Show host ends his NBC run. The special highlighting the comic’s “amazing life and success” airs Friday, January 31 at 10p; Leno bids adieu Thursday, February 6.

Lance Bass, an exec producer and creator of upcoming Lifetime series Celebrity Home Raiders, tells Cynopsis he got the inspiration for the show from his boy band days. “We were digging around the storage facilities for *NSYNC and found tons of stuff that the group had used on tour over the years,” Bass says. “I thought, ‘Wow, I wonder what this stuff is worth!’ which led me to think about items and memorabilia my friends might have saved, and how we could potentially raise money for charity by auctioning things off.” The show from DiGa Vision and Leftfield Pictures – premieres Thursday, March 6 at 10p.

Super Skyscrapers, part of PBS‘s new Wednesday night science block expanding programming into the 10p hour, launches with “One World Trade Center.” The one-hour ep from Blink Films UK, about the structure engineered to be the safest skyscraper ever built, premieres Wednesday, February 5 at 10p

Preemptions bumped the premieres of three new series on The Weather Channel. Raging Nature now bows Monday, February 17 at 8p; Building Invincible debuts Sunday, March 30 at 9p and Will to Live arrives Sunday, April 20 at 9p.

Smithsonian Channel is paying tribute to Pete Seeger, the folk music icon who died on January 27 at age 94, with encore presentations of the 2009 documentary, Play On John: A Life in Music. The film explores the life of musician John Cohen, who formed an old-time string band with Seeger’s half-brother Mike, and incudes an interview and performance with Seeger. Doc airs Saturday, February 1 at 5p and Sunday, February 2 at 10a; Smithsonianchannel.com is streaming.

In honor of Black History Month, Cynopsis Media is producing a special Black History Month guide, sent out Tuesday, February 4, 2014. If your network has programming related to the topic airing from February 4-28, email Lynn Leahey ([email protected]) no later than today, January 30 to be included in this free special edition. Please include the following information: title, dates and time of airings. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

 RETURNING SERIES

Ahead of the season four premiere of IFC‘s Portlandia comes a sneak peek, showing the quirky comedy’s Fred Armison and Carrie Brownstein tailgating… to their favorite NPR show. The video launches IFC.com’s four-part web series, Prairie Home Companion Tailgating; TV show premieres Thursday, February 27 at 10p.

Season two of E!‘s Total Divas returns Sunday, March 16 at 9p. The Bunim-Murray production averaged 836,000 viewers A18-49 and 1.3 million total viewers in its first go-round.

SYNDICATION

The hoopla surrounding the Golden Globe Awards kept entertainment news shows buzzing the week ending January 19. Entertainment Tonight matched its season-high household rating of 4.0, as did Access Hollywood (1.9) and Extra (1.8); TMZ set a new season high (2.1), and Access Hollywood scored a season high 1.6.

CDT‘s Serch averaged a solid .9/2 in households during its three-week tryout on Tribune stations. That’s equal to the mid-January metered market average of fellow edgy talkers Steve Wilkos, Bill Cunningham and Jerry Springer.

AWARDS SHOW CENTRAL

Mark Wahlberg will host the 27th annual Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards Saturday, March 29 at 8p. Last year’s fanfest delivered 5.8 million viewers; past hosts trying to dodge the slime included Jack Black, Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz.

Nominees were announced for the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Miranda Lambert and Tim McGraw led the pack with seven nods; American Idol judge Keith Urban scored six. The show, hosted by Luke Bryan and Lambert’s husband, The Voice host Blake Shelton, airs on CBS Sunday, April 6 at 8p.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

ABC ordered The Winklers to series. The Walcott Company comedy, from Phil Rosenthal (Everybody Loves Raymond), Max Winkler, the son of Happy Days star Henry Winkler, and Rob Reinis, is based on the Winklers’ lives.

Cisneros, focused on the Hispanic and Latin markets, formed a partnership with media company Bungalow Media + Entertainment, LLC to develop Latin-based entertainment content for global audiences.

Gail Berman is leaving BermanBraun, the TV, movie and digital entertainment company she founded with Lloyd Braun. “I take great pride in the company’s amazing achievements over the past seven years,” said Braun in a statement. “There are several unique opportunities I am considering and intend to make an announcement about my decision very soon.”

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Shooting is underway for a third season of Wentworth, from FremantleMedia Australia. The premiere of the prison drama on Foxtel‘s SoHo channel in May 2013 was the most-watched non-sports program ever on Austrian television.

Oznoz, an online channel for bilingual kids, is teaming with JCC TV (Al Jazeera‘s children’s channel) to bring Arabic programming to North America. Content will be in Arabic, as well as languages including English and French.

DEALS

FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment sold preschool show Ella the Elephant, now in more than 50 territories, to Disney Junior on Latin America.

Entertainment One Television closed deals for factual programming in territories including Italy, Germany, Hungary Africa and Israel.

Electus International signed multiple deals with Fox International Channels in the Middle East, for over thirty hours of content (The Hero, 72 Hours, Car Lot Rescue, Lone Star legend) in territories including Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon, Oman, State of Palestine, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Portfolio Entertainment signed four new international broadcast partners for animated preschool series Doki, in the U.S. (Qubo), Taiwan (Horng En Culture), Germany (KiKA) and Singapore (MediaCorp).

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

CBS Corp. and Amazon extended their content licensing agreement, bringing shows from CBS Television Distribution and Showtime Networks to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video. Season one of summer hit Under the Dome was watched by more customers than any other TV series on Prime Instant Video last year. The series was available for streaming on Amazon just four days after its CBS broadcast, a model the companies will follow for summer 2014 event Extant.

RATINGS

Boosted by its first-ever mini-series, Klondike, Discovery had its most-watched month in network history in viewers and key demos, including total viewers P2+, Persons and Men M18+ and Persons and Men 25-54 delivery, no exclusions. It was also the second most watched January in network history among Women 25-54. Average viewers P2+ increased 12 percent, to 1.77 million, versus January 2013.

Lifetime had its best January delivery in six years among total viewers. The premiere of original movie Flowers in the Attic did its part, drawing 6.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen, to make it ad-supported cable’s number one telecast of the night and most-watched original movie since November 2012.

DIY boasted its most-watched month ever in January, averaging 107,000 P25-54 prime impressions. The weekend of January 16 was its most-watched ever, averaging 145,000 P25-54 impressions from 7a-8p.

HGTV reports it was the number one cable net on weekends in 2013 with upscale W25-54, and the number two on weekends among upscale P25-54. And the lifestyle net’s off to a good start in 2014, with its highest-rated, most-watched weekend, delivering a .61 P25-54 on the weekend of January 26 from 7a-8p.

January was the first month ever that Investigation Discovery averaged a 1.0 HH rating, and delivered over 1 million among P2+ (1.02 million) in Prime. With the launch of five new series, ID also had its best month ever among P2+, HH, P25-54, W25-54 and W18-49.

Destination America had its best month in January in Prime and Total Day among HH (175,000 and 108,000), P2+ (242,000 and 140,000) and key demos including P18-49 (99,000 and 59,000), with an assist from the premieres of Buying the Bayou and Hillbilly Blood.
