Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 30, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Polling, research and strategic marketing firm Leger has the goods on projected Super Bowl numbers, conducting a survey with 1000 people online about their planned engagement with the game (margin of error of +/- 2.6% @ 90%, or +/- 3.1% @ 95% confidence level). According to the study, 71% of respondents planned to watch the Super Bowl, with nearly a quarter more interested in the commercials than what’s going on in the field. The survey also showed that nearly half plan to use social media during the contest, with three quarters of the people aged 18-29 set to do so.

In addition, 15% of the respondents reported that they played Fantasy Football this year, with 24% of all men and 7% of all women (note: there were around 8 million women who played this past year).

ON THE AIR

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Amy Hogue threw out a class action lawsuit filed last June against Time Warner Cable, the Lakers and the Dodgers, according to THR. The lawsuit saw plaintiffs protesting the addition of $4-$5 in additional cable fees per month, after the cable company inked huge deals for rights to the teams and subsequently launched team-branded channels. Plaintiffs claimed the cost was passed along to cable subscribers. “It may be that any number of consumers would reasonably consider the practice of adding a new cable channel to an existing tier of service (rather than offering it as a separate channel) and charging more for the service is somehow ‘unfair,’ Judge Hogue wrote of the decision. “But the fact remains that federal law expressly allows it and expressly forbids states from invoking their own consumer protection laws to interfere with the deregulated structure imposed by Congress.”

After early reports stated the Hollywood may scale back its presence at the Super Bowl, we all knew that wasn’t going to be the case. The Wrap reports that a slew of movies are once again set to offer commercials at the big game with nine on deck this year. Disney will present Need for Speed, Captain America 2: Winter Soldier, and Muppets Most Wanted. Paramount counters with Noah and Transformers 4. Sony offers Robocop and Amazing Spider-Man 2, while Universal pushes Neighbors. Finally, Lionsgate/Summit is on board with Draft Day.

For the first time in its 73-year history, Cheerios will appear in an ad during the Super Bowl, bringing back the family from last year’s “Just Checking” ad released in May. The spot, dubbed Gracie, will find the family back at the breakfast table, as the father announces to Gracie that she’ll be a big sister. General Mills was forced to shut down YouTube comments for the 2013 spot after drawing a bevy of hateful comments because the family was biracial. However, the video went on to nab 4.6 million viewers on the site.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is expanding its borders, announcing the first-ever Pro Football Hall of Fame Fan Fest at Cleveland’s International Exposition Center on May 3-4. The event will include interactive experiences, as well as opportunities to interact with the 100 Hall of Famers scheduled to participate. The event will cover more than one million square feet and also feature football clinics, film screenings and autograph sessions.

Say goodbye to the Phoenix Coyotes. Team co-owner, President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc announced that the NHL franchise will officially change their franchise name to the Arizona Coyotes beginning at the start of the 2014-15 NHL season. The team has been known as the Phoenix Coyotes since it moved to the area from Winnipeg in 1996.

The Creative Coalition and WWE, co-founders of the Be a STAR  anti-bullying initiative, announced the winners of the first-ever Be a STAR grant program. The program awarded grants totaling $125,000 to five qualified non-profit public charities that develop and implement anti-bullying programs. Grantees include The Armory Foundation, Blue Star Families, Inc., DoSomething.org, East LA Boys & Girls Club and National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Digital sports video agency SendtoNews inked a partnership with sports video news agency Sports News Television (SNTV), a joint venture of IMG Media and The Associated Press. The deal sees SendtoNews acquiring the rights to distribute SNTV digital and broadcast content through its News Partnership Network and adds the likes of the Winter Games, FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon and the US Open to the company’s rights portfolio.

FOX Sports announced that, in partnership with the National Association of the Deaf, the company will offer audiences the complete ASL performance of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful during the Super Bowl on iPads and desktop computers. Amber Zion will provide the ASL rendition of the songs during the pregame festivities. The performance can be seen on the FOX Sports GO app as well as at FOXSports.com/SuperBowl.

NBC Sports reports that there were 6.8 million minutes of Premier League action streamed on its NBC Sports Live Extra platform for Tuesday’s matches. That marks the second best for a weekday in its history.
