Sam Champion is leaving ABC News for the Weather Channel. The veteran weather reporter, who has been with Good Morning America since 2006, will anchor a flagship morning show and serve as managing editor for the weather net, which underwent an on-screen makeover last month. “Sam just saw the same potential in The Weather Channel that we did,” David Clark, president of TWC, tells Cynopsis, “and we bonded over that. Together we are investing in the future of the brand.” Meteorologist Ginger Zee will take over Champion’s responsibilities at ABC.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Comcast is testing a technology, developed with Nielsen, that inserts fresh ads in past TV episodes that are available on demand. With fast-forward function for commercials disabled and official Nielsen measurement, the approach could not only unlock VOD advertising dollars, but also free up networks to release more episodes on demand so viewers could catch up, possibly increasing live ratings.

TNT is taking to Twitter to promote its upcoming period drama, Mob City. Yesterday, tweets that will make up the first episode’s script (minus the ending) started issuing from @MobCityTNT, and will continue until shortly before the show’s debut on Wednesday, December 4 at 9p. Creator Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead) and Mob performers will add commentary to the online “adaptweetion.”

AutoZone, a distributor of replacement parts and accessories, has jumped aboard Sportsman Channel for a marketing campaign now through 2014. It’s a natural fit, according to the net’s Graig Hale. “Sportsmen are know to be DIYers when it comes to needs for their vehicles and outdoor machinery,” said the VP of business development.

Video curator What’s Trending and Ford‘s “Fiesta Movement” campaign are teaming for the Second Annual Tube-A-Thon, a digital social telethon to raise money for Covenant House. During the live-streamed event on What’s Trending (YouTube.com/WhatsTrending), Thursday December 12 at 9p, for every tweet with the hashtag #Tubeathon or #FiestaMovement, $1 will be donated to Covenant House.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Although telenovelas are meant to have a one-season life span, Telemundo is bringing back its popular series, El Senor de los Cielos for another run. In its first go-round, Senor was one of Telemundo’s most successful series ever, regularly beating at least one English-language net in the younger demos during its April-August airings. New shows, already in production, are set to bow in spring 2014.

Program Call:Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual NATPE Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers on Thursday, January 23, 2014, the week before NATPE Market and Conference 2014 opens at the Fontainebleau Resort, Miami Beach. If your company is an official exhibitor at NATPE 2014, please email Lynn Leahey at: [email protected] for details on how to submit listings.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

History is developing a mini-series about Carthaginian military commander Hannibal Barca. Halle Berry will serve as an exec producer on the A+E Studios/Red Arrow Entertainment project. “Hannibal was not only the greatest African general to ever live,” said Berry, “he may have been the greatest general, period.”

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

The two-night finale of U.K.’s The X Factor will include performances by One Direction, The Killers, Katy Perry and Elton John, broadcast from London on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15. Hopefully without incident – on Sunday’s ITV broadcast of the singing competition, a technical glitch caused a blackout for parts of England. The net resorted to Twitter to reveal who didn’t make the cut.

Americans won’t be the only ones watching “Angels” strut the runway at the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Alfred Haber Distribution has lined up licensees in Canada (Shaw Media), Latin America (Turner), Asia (FOX International Channels) and Turkey (NTV), among other territories, for the lingerie parade, airing Stateside on CBS Tuesday, December 10 at 10p.

The first men’s lifestyle channel in the Asia Pacific, LSTV, launches in early 2014 in Hong Kong, Thailand, Mongolia and the Philippines. From Mei Ah Entertainment and Playboy Plus Entertainment, the channel’s content will run the gamut from cooking shows to Girls Gone Wild.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment signed a deal for its Soapstar Superstar format, a singing competition for soap opera stars, with Vietnam’s Tincom Media.

~ RATINGS ~

Even with two losing-record teams (Giants/Redskins), NBC‘s Sunday Night Football won the night among young viewers in broadcast on Sunday. According to preliminary ratings, the game scored a 5.4 rating in A18-49.

Boosted by a 20-minute NFL overrun Sunday, CBS‘s 60 Minutes earned a 3.4 A18-49 rating, up from last week’s 1.6 in the demo. The net’s Amazing Race (1.9) and The Good Wife (1.6) each jumped three tenths in A18-49 week to week, per early numbers.

And then there was The Walking Dead. The AMC hit’s midseason finale on Sunday night delivered 12.1 million total viewers, and 7.7 million in A18-49 for a 6.2 rating in the demo. That didn’t match the record-breaking 16.1 million viewers of the season premiere, but the zombie drama is still up 29 percent in the first half of the season versus season three. Post-show The Talking Dead delivered a series-high 6 million viewers. Walking Dead, the number one prime time show across cable and broadcast, returns for the rest of season four on Sunday, February 9 at 9p.

ABC‘s This Week earned its first sweeps victory in A25-54 over NBC‘s Meet the Press (+21,000) since July 1993. The ABC public affairs program drew 787,000 in the news demo in November 2013, 23 percent higher than the previous sweep in July 2013. CBS‘s Face the Nation maintained the top spot, though, with 1.04 million A25-54.
