IN THE NEWS

Newly anointed Viacom CEO Bob Bakish will take the reins at MTV, Comedy Central and Spike TV upon the January 12 exit of Music and Entertainment Group President Doug Herzog. Chris McCarthy, who oversees MTV, VH1 and Logo, Comedy Central head Kent Alterman and Spike TV president Kevin Kay will now report directly to Bakish. Herzog announced on Wednesday his intention to step down after 25 years at the company, saying in an internal memo, “It was a helluva run, and I would wish it on anyone. I loved every minute of it.”

A&E canceled docu-series Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Exposing Hate in America after learning third-party payments were made to some participants to facilitate access, in violation of the network’s policies for a documentary: “We had previously provided assurances to the public and our core partners…that no payment was made to hate group members and we believed that to be the case at the time.” The day before, amid controversy, A&E had changed the name of the doc from Generation KKK.

The number of scripted TV series just keeps growing. FX Networks Research estimates 455 aired this year on broadcast, up 8 percent over last year’s 421, and 71 percent more than the 266 in 2011. The number of broadcast, premium cable and basic cable shows dropped, but the dip was more than made up for by a jump from 46 to 93 shows on streaming services.

Nancy Dubuc, president and CEO of A+E Networks, will deliver the opening keynote at NATPE Miami next month, while Viacom CEO Bob Backish will headline the NATPE Platforms track. Bob Saget (Full House) has been tapped to host the Reality Breakthrough Awards. The marketplace takes place January 17-19.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that Republican Party communications chief Sean Spicer will be White House press secretary. Hope Hicks was named director of strategic communications, Jason Miller landed the job of director of communications and Dan Scavino will be director of social media. “Sean, Hope, Jason and Dan have been key members of my team during the campaign and transition.I am excited they will be leading the team that will communicate my agenda that will Make America Great Again,” Trump said in a statement. Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, who had turned down the role of press secretary, will serve as counselor in the White House.

Alan Thicke died of a ruptured aorta and “standard type A aortic dissection,” according to a death certificate obtained by People. The Growing Pains star, 69, had complained of chest pain while playing hockey with his son Carter, and died shortly after being taken to the hospital on December 13.

Madeline Di Nonno has been named the new Board Chair of the Television Academy Foundation. Di Nonno, CEO of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, succeeds Robert Cook.

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek paid tribute to a contestant who died of cancer at age 41 after taping a winning streak that earned her $105,803. “For the past six Jeopardy! programs, you folks have been getting to know the talented champion, Cindy Stowell,” said Trebek on Wednesday. “Appearing on the show was the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition for that lady. What you did not know is that when we taped these programs with her a few weeks ago, she was suffering from Stage IV cancer and sadly, on Dec. 5, Cindy Stowell passed away. So from all of us here at Jeopardy!, our sincere condolences to her family and her friends.” Stowell had said she planned to donate her winnings to cancer research.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

NBC is developing a workplace comedy from Ed HelmsPacific Electric Picture Company starring Anjelah Johnson (MadTV). We the People centers on an LA case officer who helps people gain their citizenship.

The show will go on – at least for now – on Univision. An LA Superior Court judge rejected a proposed injunction from the estate of Jenni Rivera aimed at halting a series, Su verdadero nombre era Dolores (Her Real Name Was Dolores), based on the late superstar’s life. The complaint against Rivera’s former manager, Pete Salgado, and several production companies (but not Univision) claims Salgado broke a non-disclosure agreement he signed in 2013. Rivera died in a plane crash in 2012.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Smithsonian Channel is ready to make your skin crawl with Crazy Monster, premiering Wednesday, January 4 at 8p. First topic: Spiders.

Teen Mom 2 is back on MTV Monday, January 2 at 9p, followed by the returns of Teen Wolf and Sweet/Vicious on Tuesday, January 3 at 9p after a holiday hiatus.

COMING UP

getTV pays tribute to the late David Bowie with a broadcast of his 1975 appearance on Cher, Monday, January 9 at 10p. The rock icon passed away January 10 of this year. A month-long Cher streak also features Muhammad Ali and Carol Burnett.

MTV Live will air a tribute to artists who passed this year, beginning Monday, December and continuing throughout the week.

Bounce TV acquired the Trumpet Awards, an annual event celebrating African-American achievements and contributions. The network will own, produce and premiere the event annually, as well as syndicate it to television stations nationally and internationally. The 25th Anniversary Trumpet Awards will air Sunday, January 29 at 9p, following a black-tie ceremony in Atlanta on January 21.

Canal 22 Mexico’s holiday programming begins tonight at 8p, with Luciano Pavarotti performing Christmas songs, accompanied by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Playing catch-up: All 10 episodes of NBC’s This Is Us will air on sister net USA. The binge opportunity starts Saturday, January 7 at 1p with the pilot episode airing simultaneously on NBCUni’s USA, Bravo and E!, with episodes continuing on USA through 11p.

ADVERTISING

Upfront revenues for November were up 9 percent versus November 2015, according to Standard Media Index. Broadcast had a 5 percent lift, while cable rose 13 percent. November scatter revenue went in a different direction, down 29 percent for broadcast and 8 percent for cable.

GOING GLOBAL

A+E Networks is going big in South Korea. The company is expanding its footprint in the country via a partnership with entertainment media company, IHQ Inc., in which it will acquire a strategic stake. A+E will also purchase two local channels, FoodTV and TVIS, which will be widely distributed across a range platforms to an audience that includes more than 20 million homes.

Factual content production and distribution company Barcroft Media has signed content agreements that will see the company’s short form content distributed to news audiences in China, Africa and Canada. Barcroft videos will launch on Weibo, China’s largest social media platform and Toronto-based Rumble.com, while  MobiMedia/RealTime Images will distribute Barcroft content to local African partners including MTN, Vodafone, Huawei and Safaricom.
