12/22/15: Netflix avoids taxation in the United Kingdom, Donald Trump creates some online buzz, and Scripps Networks launches channels on Apple TV


Good morning. It’s Tuesday December 22, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Here is one event Donald Trump has officially won. According to data tracked by ListenFirst Media, during the Democratic presidential debates this fall, Republican Trump was the candidate who received the most online buzz. Below are more stats from ListenFirst.
* Out of all 2016 presidential candidates, Trump accumulated the highest rating during Saturday night’s debate with 725K engagements.
* Looking at Democratic candidates alone, Bernie Sanders accumulated the highest rating with 457K engagements.
* Looking at all the Democratic debates from 2015, Trump has held the highest rating during all three.
* In total, candidates accumulated 1.9 million engagements during Saturday’s debate.
* Collectively, Trump and Sanders accounted for 60% of the total engagements from the night.


Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger, who happens to be on the board of Apple, is a big fan of Apple TV and the ease of its user experience. While he didn’t open up to Bloomberg about future plans for the two companies, Iger acknowledged that the pair have a strong relationship. In other Apple news, the company has settled with Ericsson over a patent-rights case that had been on the table since spring. This seven-year agreement has the potential to assist in “second screen video development” across the globe, according to RapidTVNews.com.
Netflix may have more than 4.5 million subscribers in the UK but the streaming service appears to have found a way to avoid paying corporate taxes there, at least according to an investigation by the Sunday Times. The Times does not suggest Netflix, which launched in the UK in 2012, broke any laws.
DirecTV will hold its first ‘Binge-a-thon’ from December 26 to January 2, making 1,100 episodes available for free regardless of which programming package individuals subscribe to. The shows will be available on DirecTV’s channel 1000, at DirecTV.com/bingeathon, or via the DirecTV mobile app.

Scripps Networks Interactive
has launched HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel on Apple TV. Pay-TV subscribers will be able to access programming on demand or watch live streams of the nets.
Culture Machine will release a 360-degree video on its YouTube channel. First up: a VR video from India.
Spike’s Lip Sync Battle has released the promo for its Jan. 7 episode, featuring actors Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Both just happen to be in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film, The Hateful Eight. Plus, of course, married.
SBS TV has released its SBS On Demand app to the Apple TV App Store. The Seven Network also released its 7Plus app for Apple TV.

Of the 10 videos that trended the most on YouTube this year, two were advertisements, one was a public service announcement, three were from late-night TV, one was a clip from Britain’s Got Talent, and three came from independent creators: a dashcam video a British police officer singing a Taylor Swift song, a slow-motion video of a giant water balloon exploding, and four-year-old Heaven King doing the Whip and Nae Nae.
SheKnows Media received its peak reach to date in November with 90.1 million unique visitors in the month, an over 89% increase versus the year prior.
