DIGITAL DATA
Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) introduced a bill that would restore some of the net neutrality rules repealed by the FCC last week. The “Open Internet Preservation Act” calls for restoring a ban on the blocking or slowing of web sites. The bill does not include a ban on Internet providers speeding up certain web sites in exchange for payment. The Internet Association, representing companies like Netflix and Facebook, said the proposal “does not meet the criteria for basic net neutrality protections…and will not provide consumers with the protections they need to have guaranteed access to the entire internet.”
Cash Lift, based on Discovery’s Cash Cab, has launched on Discovery Go and Facebook Watch. The digital-first series, a collaboration between Group Nine Studios and Discovery Digital, turns unsuspecting hotel guests’ elevator rides turned into a trivia game show. Discovery and Group Nine aren’t strangers – the companies worked together on Shark Week.
Netflix renewed thriller Dark, its first German-language production, for a second season. Said Kelly Luegenbiehl, VP international originals for the streaming service, of the global hit, “When we first heard about Dark, we realized very early on that we hadn’t seen anything like this show before – in Germany or anywhere else in the world.”
NBC unlocked its entire Will & Grace library, current season included, giving fans access via the NBC app to over 190 episodes of the comedy. Come and get it, through December 31.
The first 7 seasons of FXX’s Archer are now available to subscribers of FX+ commercial-free service. The most recent season, Archer: Dreamland will be added in February, ahead of the season 9 premiere of Archer: Danger Island.
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
Digital ad revenues hit an all-time high of $40.1 billion for the first half of 2017, according the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report, prepared by PwC US. That’s a 23% rise from the same time period in 2016. Mobile grabbed 54% of total digital ad spend; the $21.7 billion advertisers spent on mobile during the first 6 months of 2017 was a 40% increase form 2016. “We’ve seen digital marketing revenues climb steadily and this new analysis shows that there are more opportunities to be mined,” said Chris Kuist, SVP, research and impact, IAB. “Varied audiences and advertising approaches can appeal to a wide variety of marketers in different shapes and sizes, bringing more dollars into the ecosystem and increasing the health of the interactive marketplace for all.”
HGTV will launch its first special produced with an ad partner on Saturday, January 6 at 10a. 30-minute Home United stars home renovation experts (and Bachelor and Bachelorette alums) Chris and Peyton Lambton helping a newlywed couple when their design styles collide. The show will feature items from Wayfair, and Wayfair’s website will include a collection of items from the show. “Typically, advertisers do not have the opportunity to get on the ground floor with networks on program content creation. Product placement into existing storylines is most common,” Courtney Lawrie, director of brand marketing, Wayfair, told Adweek. “We felt this was a great opportunity to differentiate together, and provide HGTV viewers something they haven’t seen before on the network.”
The national TV market had a 2% lift in November, with cable up 3% and broadcast seeing a 1% uptick, according to Standard Media Index. Year-to-date the overall market is down 3%, with cable dipping 2% and broadcast down 4%.
Walmart tops the list of big retail TV spenders, laying out $84.2 million through November 26, reports Kantar Media, up 16% versus 2016. Target is next with $67.2 million (up +7%) followed by Kohl’s with $33.2 million (up +10%) and JC Penney with $32.6 million (up +19%).
