NBC has officially given the go-ahead for 12-hour miniseries A.D., the follow-up to Mark Burnett and Roma Downey‘s mega-hit History mini-series, The Bible. “We are firmly in the ‘event’ business,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, “and nothing has more event potential than A.D.”

 IN THE NEWS

Facebook is testing video ads in select users’ newsfeeds on Thursday with teasers for the movie Divergent. The social network behemoth is moving cautiously so as not to alienate users (the ad won’t be heard unless it’s clicked on), but the move inches it closer the $66 billion TV ad market. “Marketers will be able to use this new format to tell their stories to a large number of people on Facebook in a short amount of time,” said a Tuesday Facebook blog post.

Media companies need to develop closer relationships with viewers, according to a new report from EY that points to six trends driving the future of television. Bottom line: “The story isn’t about making content available on multiple platforms,” said Chris Gianutsos, Executive Director, Media & Entertainment Advisory Services, EY. “It’s about enabling experiences with compelling content tailored to an audience of one.”

Starting Tuesday, A&E and Lifetime apps were available on Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Gold members. The apps allow users to access episodes, movies and exclusive clips from the nets; users who sign in via a TV or satellite provider will have more content available.

Season four mentors Shakira and Usher are returning for The Voice‘s next edition, once again filling the chairs of Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green. Adam Levine and Blake Shelton are staying put. Season six launches with a two-night premiere Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25 at 8p.

General Motors has pacted with nascent El Rey network, launching this month from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, for exclusive auto integrations to be featured in El Rey’s original productions. The cross-platform campaign will be supported across all El Rey’s television, digital and social channels, and include branded content for on-air and off-site marketing efforts. Hyundai and Ford have gotten marketing mileage out of associations with, respectively, AMC and the CW

The Weather Channel is taking advantage of uncertainty about the biggest sporting and television event of the year being held outdoors in (possibly) snowy New Jersey  including offering ad packages like The Touchdown Partnership. “Once the teams are chosen, the main story around the Super Bowl will be the weather and how it will impact the game,” Eric Hadley, SVP, sales strategy and marketing for The Weather Company tells Cynopsis. “Everyone will be checking the weather to see how the game and players will be affected. It’s the next best way for advertisers to get into the experience beyond advertising during the game itself.”

As part of an effort to broaden its programming, CNN has launched a new unit, CNN Film Presents, to purchase feature-length documentaries. “CNN Films Presents is a curated series of exceptional documentary feature films from the past for a new audience to discover,” said SVP of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide Vinnie Malhotra. First up: March of the Penguins on Thursday, January 2.

Pivot picked up two series in the Millennial sweet spot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars, to air during its Women’s Empowerment programming block. “Both focus on smart, strong, young women dealing with critical issues from class struggles to gender roles,” said Pivot president Evan Shapiro. “Pivot will contextualize the shows, presenting them with exclusive commentary from fans, experts and academics.” Back-to-back eps air weekdays at 10p and 11p starting Monday, January 13.

TruTV launched “Watch truTV” mobile app and website, offering a live simulcast of the net’s East Coast and West Coast feeds, as well as its Social Playback function, allowing viewers access to a curated social media feed synchronized with on-demand replays of episodes. The live streaming simulcast is available in over 80 million homes via Turner’s TV Everywhere partners.

The 31st annual PaleyFest television festival relocates from the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills to the much bigger Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland for two weeks of events including screenings, panel discussions and cast reunions, starting Thursday, March 13, 2014. Honorees include Veronica Mars, which will open the festival, Pretty Little Liars and American Horror Story: Coven. Full slate to be revealed Wednesday, January 8.

 COMING UP

In History‘s upcoming The Curse of Oak Island, two men’s treacherous search for hidden treasure has an added twist: a prophecy says seven people will die before the bounty is found… and six fatal accidents have already occurred. Docu-series premieres Sunday, January 5 at 10p.

Epix will premiere comedy special Jenny McCarthy’s Dirty Sexy Funny on Valentine’s Day, February 14, at 11p, with stand-up performances by comics, and vignettes from the View host. Past Epix stand-up specials have featured Louis C. K., Tom Papa and Sherri Shepherd.

Some of the most outrageous music moments (Hi, Miley!) are relived in E! special Sounding Off: The 2013 Year in Music. Host Terrence Jenkins and panelists including DJ Pauly D and singer Christina Milian share their views on Friday, December 27 at 10p

The crew in Discovery docu-series Salvage City will go just about anywhere to rescue historic treasures. And “If you’re crazy enough to risk your life exploring them, it turns out that abandoned St. Louis buildings are filled with incredible treasures,” Coolfire Originals co-exec producer Aaron Bowden tells Cynopsis. “This is history on the verge of being lost forever – a winter storm just caused the total collapse of one of the buildings featured in the series.” Salvage City bows Sunday, December 22 at 11a.

Science Channel‘s new series, The Moaning of Life, tracks An Idiot Abroad alum Karl Pilkington as he travels the globe for a crash course on how other cultures deal with family, career and death. First stop: Mexico, on Saturday, January 18 at 10p. Idiot, the channel’s most successful series, ended after three years in February.

 RETURNING SERIES

Ready set… renovate! DIY is bringing back seven series in January, 2014. A Bryk at a Time, Massive Moves and Building Alaska all return for sophomore seasons. Rescue Renovation is back for a fifth season, Bath Crashers for a ninth and Renovation Realities for a 12th, as well as new eps from Garage Gold.

Showtime is bringing back sports talk show Jim Rome on Showtime for a season three. The Generate Entertainment production returns Wednesday, January 15 at 10p. Beginning in February, Rome will air the second Wednesday of the month through 2014.

RATINGS

NBC‘s The Voice held a commanding lead Monday night with a 3.3/9 rating in A18-49, but was down nine-tenths from its year-ago performance finale episode. On CBS, 2 Broke Girls dropped four tenths to 2.3/7 in the demo to tie its series low, but Mike & Molly saw a two-tenths pop, to 2.2/6.

Fox wrapped up its fall season the week of December 9 up 9 percent in total viewers (6.1 million) and 4 percent in A18-49 (2.0/6).

The final two original movies in Hallmark‘s “Countdown to Christmas,” Hats Off to Christmas and Finding Christmas, were the number one and number two movies of the week. It’s the seventh straight week the net has held the top spot. Eleven of the 12 holiday movies placed among the top 10 basic cable programs of the week, boosting Hallmark Channel to rank #1 among HH, W25-54, and Total Viewers in weekend prime time with an average a 3.3 HH rating, an increase of 27% over last year’s 12 original premieres.

Modern Family hit season highs in syndication in HH (5.1), and demos including A18-34 (3.1) and A18-49 (3.1). The ABC comedy is the top syndicated program in A18-34, as well as in W18-49 (3.7) and W18-34 (3.8).

Katie Couric’s high-profile jump to Yahoo didn’t hurt her daytime show’s ratings. Katie equaled its highest HH rating since September (1.8) and matched its second-best rating this season in W25-54 (.9).

Disney and Nickelodeon are neck-and-neck in the cable race for Kids 2-11 on a Total Day basis. With two weeks remaining in 2013, Disney was winning by a nose, 936,000 to 934,000.
