FX tallied up the total number of scripted TV series this year, and came up with a whopping 409. In its study, FX reports that’s an increase of 9 percent over last year, and up 94 percent from 2009. Since 2002, the number of scripted series grew 484 percent on basic cable nets (181 versus 31) – and that’s not counting Kardashians, Alaska, sharks or Housewives. At TCA last summer, FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf famously noted, “There is simply too much television.”
NBC News anchor Lester Holt will moderate the NBC News/YouTube Democratic presidential candidate debate on Sunday, January 17 in Charleston, SC. “Other NBC News political reporters and journalists” will be on hand as well, said the network.
NBC pulled the plug on live variety show Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris after one season. “I’m proud of what we did – live! – and still believe in variety. Stay tuned,” tweeted Harris Tuesday night.
TV Everywhere may not be everywhere yet, but it’s growing, according to a new study from Gfk that found 53 percent of consumers in pay TV homes have used TVE to watch shows on a computer, mobile device or TV – up 10 percent from 2012. Yet only 25 percent of consumers report having heard the expression TV Everywhere, flat from 2012. What does all this mean for programmers? “Programmers can benefit, along with the people who provide TVE platforms, because they are able to draw more audience in that is not watching regular TV,” David Tice, SVP in Media and Entertainment at GfK, tells Cynopsis. “The bigger the audience – subscription based or ad supported – the more revenue. A rising tide will lift all these boats. The situation is really a bit out of the programmers’ hands, though, because it’s up to the TVE platform owners to get consumers to tune in. If the networks themselves are creating the programs, they have more options to act and help raise awareness but third-party programmers are pretty much at the mercy of the platforms.”
E! News co-anchor Terrence Jenkins is leaving the entertainment newsmag to focus on acting and producing fulltime. Jenkins produced and starred in his first feature film, The Perfect Match, coming out in 2016. “It’s important I grow and I wanted to leave on my own terms and when I was ready,” said Jenkins, who joined E! in 2012.
LL Cool J will be back to host the Grammy Awards, airing Monday, February 15 at 8p on CBS. It will be his fifth time manning the emcee mic.
Syfy has made episodes 1-4 of freshman drama The Expanse available on Syfy.com and on demand. Episode two aired Tuesday; 3 and 4 make their linear debuts December 22 and 29. The pre-linear bow of the first installment was sampled 4.4 million times during its November 23-December 14 digital run. “With the potential to hook a broad audience over the holidays, we hope to debut Episode 5 to a committed, passionate fan base on January 5,” said Sara Moscowitz, SVP, brand and strategic marketing.

The 2015 Miss Universe Pageant, airing on Fox Sunday, December 20 at 7p, will be simulcast in Spanish on Azteca America. Univision, along with NBC, dropped the telecast after offensive remarks by the pageant’s then-owner Donald Trump last summer. What’s the attraction for Azteca, as it expands its programming roster to attract more blue chip advertisers in 2016? “Over the decades, the pageant has become a cultural phenomenon for the Latino community and with five of the last seven crowned winners coming from Latin American countries, it has also become a celebration of determination, dedication and pride,” Manuel Abud, net president and CEO, tells Cynopsis. “This opportunity underscores Azteca’s commitment to delivering high-quality productions that appeal to our audience, drive viewership and resonate with advertisers.”
NBC’s third annual American Ninja Warrior: USA Vs. the World competition is slated for Sunday, January 31 at 8p. Leading the U.S. team is American Ninja Warrior champ Isaac Caldiero.
Who’s wearing what? Today’s Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Willie Geist and Tamron Hall find out as hosts of NBC’s Golden Globes pre-show special on Sunday, January 10 at 7p. Ricky Gervais mans the main event from 8-11p.
AXS TV acquired UK scripted mockumentary series Hoff the Record, starring David Hasselhoff playing a fictionalized version of himself trying to revive his career across the pond. Six-parter, which debuted in June, lands Stateside this spring. “Hoff the Record is what happens when an American superstar meets cheeky British comedy,” said Matt Forde, EVP content production, sales and distribution, BBC Worldwide North America.
ASPiRE made some acquisitions of its own, picking up family drama Soul Food, premiering on the net Friday, January 1 with a three-day marathon, and all five seasons of crime drama Mod Squad, debuting Monday, January 4 from 2p-8p. Soul Food debuted on Showtime in 2000; Mod Squad ran on ABC from 1968-1973.

Oprah: Where Are They Now? returns to OWN Saturday, January 23 at 10p with a season that includes sit-downs with Dick Van Dyke, Chaz Bono, Sugar Ray Leonard and Naomi Judd, among others.
TNT renewed The Librarians and Murder in the First for season threes and Major Crimes for a fifth run. The Librarians airs Sundays at 8p and Crimes is on Mondays at 9p, while Murder wrapped its sophomore season last summer. Canceled by the net: Legends after two seasons, and freshmen Public Morals and Agent X.

While the event didn’t hit the ratings-buster highs Fox News did for the first debate (25 million) or CNN for the second (24 million), this time around drew a third-best 18 million out of six, the second-most-watched program in CNN’s history. Most tweeted moment of the night: 19,5000 tweets were sent following that exchange between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush.
