IN THE NEWS
Fox is airing a live ad for 20 Century Fox film The Greatest Showman during Sunday’s A Christmas Story Live!. In the 2 ½ -minute spot, Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Keala Settle will perform a song from the P.T. Barnum biopic, accompanied by 150 dancers, on a soundstage on the Warner Bros. lot adjacent to the soundstage housing A Christmas Story. “We are creating what we expect will be a memorable performance providing energy and excitement,” said Michelle Marks, SVP of marketing and global media promotions for 20th Century Fox Film. “The first-ever live commercial for a feature film is one that P.T. Barnum would have been proud of.”
Netflix nabbed the most SAG Award nominations yesterday, racking up19. Among shows, the leaders were HBO’s Big Little Lies, and Netflix’s GLOW and Stranger Things, which each collected 4 noms. Comedy Series Ensemble nominees included ABC’s black-ish, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep, and Netflix’s GLOW and Orange Is the New Black. Up for Drama Ensemble are Netflix’s The Crown and Stranger Things, HBO’s Game of Thrones, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and NBC’s This Is Us. For a complete list of TV nominees, go here.
Sean Hayes, the only actor nominated from NBC’s Will & Grace, had this to say about being named alongside black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, Master of None’s Aziz Ansari, Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David, Shameless’ William Macy and GLOW’s Marc Maron, for Male Actor in a Comedy Series: “I am so honored to be recognized in this category with these extraordinary actors. I love acting because I love actors. I also like to bake sometimes.”
Add T-Mobile to the list of TV players. The wireless carrier bought broadband video startup Layer3 TV, with plans for a nationwide TV service in 2018. “This is about an integrated home and mobile experience,” said T-Mobile CEO John Legere in a conference call. “Some could argue that TV is a crowded space, but you could have said that about mobile before we disrupted that as well.”
It appears the T-Mobile service likely won’t include original content, at least in the beginning. “The problem out there today is not that there isn’t great content,” said COO Mike Sievert. “There’s so much content out there that the bigger issues are access and discovery.”
Neil Cavuto will host a 2-hour Saturday news program, Cavuto Live, debuting January 20 at 10a on Fox News. The show will feature a breakdown of the major business and politics headlines, with a rotating panel of industry experts. With his added role, Cavuto will be helming 17 hours of live programming across FNC and Fox Business Network. Which is fine by him. “During the week, I live for live,” Cavuto tells Cynopsis. “It only seems fitting in these fast-moving times, I make weekend coverage the same. The news demands it, and viewers deserve it.”
Omarosa Manigault Newman, who met President Trump as a troublemaking contestant on The Apprentice in 2004, and later became the director of communications for the White House Office of Public Liaison, is out. While White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters yesterday that Manigault Newman resigned “to pursue other opportunities” effective January 20, American Urban Radio Networks reporter and CNN contributor April Ryan tweeted a different story. “Okay the White House still contends Omarosa signed a resignation letter,” said Ryan. “But Gen Kelly Kicked her out with high drama with the Minister offering vulgarities and curse words as she was escorted out of the building and off campus.” The Wall Street Journal reported she was “physically dragged and escorted off campus.” But New York Times reporter Yamiche Alcindor tweeted that a White House source said Manigault Newman will be on staff as she finishes up her work, and “that person disputes that she was escorted out.”
Digital measurement has been a hot topic, and Media Rating Council executive director and CEO George Ivie is at the forefront of the discussion. As it assesses the implications of emerging measurement practices, the MRC has been working with the 4As, the ANA and the IAB to adopt new industry standards. So, how’re they doing? Ivie will be at the Yale Club tomorrow, Friday, December 15, for a presentation to the Market Research Club – and he has plenty to share. “2018 may turn out to be one of the most momentous years in recent history as relates to digital measurement,” Ivie tells Cynopsis. “In addition to advancement of the Media Rating Council recently released digital audience based measurement standards, we will see the introduction of cross-platform measurement standards from MRC and the audits of several of the large digital platforms, Google, Facebook and Twitter so far. I will provide an overview of the changes in motion.” To reserve a spot, go to [email protected].
A new TiVo survey shows the pace of customers cutting the cable cord is slowing. “The number of those cutting cable within the preceding year has been trending upward with an increase of nearly 3 percentage points y/y; however this quarter’s survey results mark the first quarter since Q3 2016 to see a slight decrease,” says the report. When asked if they planned to change pay TV providers in the next 6 months, 5.4% of respondents said they planned to cut their pay TV service, 7.7% planned to change providers, 5.8% intended to switch to an online service or app, and 27.5% said … “maybe.”

ABC tops the list of broadcast networks when it comes to employing Asian-Americans on primetime network TV, scoring an overall grade of “B” from the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition. CBS received a B-, NBC a C+, and Fox an incomplete, for lack of data. “This past season and the current 2017-2018 season are setting new standards for representation, although there were many missed opportunities for inclusion,” said APAMC chairman Daniel Mayeda. “We look forward to working with the networks to continue to elevate the presence of Asians and Pacific Islanders in all categories, with a particular emphasis on shows on which we are able to tell our own stories by having leading roles.”
CBS News and GZERO Media, a subsidiary of Eurasia Group, have formed a strategic partnership for coverage of international affairs and global finance. “We need more light, less heat in our understanding of an increasingly uncertain and dangerous global environment,” said Ian Bremmer, founder of Eurasia Group.

RATINGS
Megyn Kelly’s 9a hour of Today on Monday had its fourth-best rated day since premiering in June, despite a pre-emption in New York for the subway bombing. Kelly’s show featured 3 of the women who have accused President Trump of sexual harassment or assault.
National TV news keeps growing, up 5% in Nielsen Live+SD viewing among total viewers versus year-ago. According to Pivotal Research Group, the boost is driven by cable’s Fox News, MSNBC and CNN, which account for 15% of the rise. The big three broadcast nets are down 8% – pretty impressive considering 2016 was a (very news-worthy) election year.
Among cable news nets, Fox News averaged 2.4 million viewers in primetime and 1.5 million in total day, earning its highest-rated year in network history on a 24-hour basis in total viewers, topping the field in primetime in viewers and A25-54.
Fox Business Network delivered its highest-rated year since launch, up 27% in Business Day total viewers (to 195,000) and 14% among A25-54 (25,000), versus 2016.
Soon-to-be Alabama Senator Doug Jones wasn’t the only big winner Tuesday night. CNN delivered 1.15 million viewers among A25-54 from 8-10p, versus 809,000 for Fox News and 808,000 for MSNBC. In total viewers Fox News was on top, drawing 3.55 million viewers opposite MSNBC (3.15 million) and CNN (2.76 million).
Sweet news for Food Network: The net’s Holiday Baking Championship posted a .8 A25-54 rating on Monday night, while its Candy Cane Sugar House video generated another 980,000 views on Monday, for a total of 5.7 million views.
