12/14/17: ESPN Head John Skipper Outlines His Path To Success For 2018 In Bristol

In a wide-ranging, two-hour meeting with over 450 of the company’s forward-facing talent, ESPN President John Skipper emphasized that ESPN is poised for continued success in an evolving media landscape. “At the end of this meeting I want you to be confident about the future of ESPN,” Skipper said. “I want you to feel proud about working here and I want you to feel that your best efforts are needed for that future and to feel that pride.”

With SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt moderating, Skipper then described several strategies including: maintaining and growing ESPN’s live rights portfolio; driving maximum distribution of ESPN’s content through traditional distributors and aggressive licensing of OTT distributors; launching the direct-to-consumer service ESPN+ in 2018 through Disney’s deal with BAMTech; and continuing the company’s focus on the breadth and depth of storytelling and strong journalism. “I want to lead an ESPN that strives purposely and confidently into a new world which is not scary but exciting,” Skipper said.

The presentations concluded with SportsCenter’s Sage Steele asking questions of President Global Sales & Marketing Ed Erhardt, who touted ESPN’s strong position in the marketplace.

“All of you make such a difference and are a large part of why advertisers want to be with us,” Erhardt said.
 

ON THE AIR
 
A good year for golf; nearly 22 million viewers tuned in to LPGA Tour coverage across Golf Channel and NBC in 2017. That makes 2017 the most-viewed LPGA Tour season across NBC Sports since Golf Channel joined the NBC Sports Group in 2011. Additionally, 2017 tied 2013 as the LPGA Tour’s most-watched year across NBC Sports since 2011. Coverage drew an average of 221,000 viewers per telecast in 2017 (+24% vs. 2016), according to data released by The Nielsen Company. NBC Sports Group combined to air 31 LPGA Tour events in 2017 and a total of 420 hours of coverage, the most in LPGA history. The exclusive cable home to the LPGA Tour, Golf Channel aired coverage of four of five women’s major championships in 2017, with three majors also airing on NBC: the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, RICOH Women’s British Open and The Evian Championship. The biennial Solheim Cup also returned to network television for the first time in 15 years with weekend coverage on NBC.

The 2018 World Series of Poker announced their season will run from May 29 through July 17 and will again be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. PokerGO and ESPN will exclusively televise live streams from the WSOP, with the full television and streaming schedules to be announced at a later date. In total, 78 gold bracelets will be awarded this summer, through events featuring a wide range of buy-ins. The Main Event will again feature three starting flights, beginning on July 2. Once play combines for Day 3 on July 7, the tournament will run every day.

ESPNU will televise the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series on Saturday, Dec. 23, at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET, from Grand Canyon University Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona; considered one of the country’s preeminent collegiate soccer stadiums, the venue will host its first ever football event with the series. The double-header will feature state champions from Arizona, Florida, Maryland and Utah.
The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions announced a multi-year broadcast agreement with MAVTV Motorsports Network that will stretch through the 2019 season. The schedule will include 16 original air and re-air times between September 2 and October 21. MAVTV will showcase Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition during eight different programs at eight different facilities in 2018, each airing at least twice.

The Olympic Channel announced that it has reached cooperation agreements with the Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS), and the international governing bodies for fistball, muaythai, polo, powerlifting and tug of war to collaborate on content for the multi-platform global media destination. The agreements bring the number of partners who have announced similar deals with the Olympic Channel to 63. Federation partners include international sports federations (IFs), recognised federations and organisations, multi-sport organisers and non-recognised federations.

Turner Sports has expanded its presence at CES 2018 in Las Vegas with a full slate of live events. This year’s first-ever CES Sports Zone presented by Turner Sports will commence with a four-day showcase Tuesday, Jan. 9 – Friday, Jan. 12, featuring sports-themed content that will provide attendees with an immersive experience focused on the intersection of sports and technology. As a part of the CES Sports Zone, Turner Sports will program a Sports Business Innovation conference track – Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 10-11, beginning at 10 a.m. local each day – with two full days of panel discussions, a live ELEAGUE showcase and TNT’s Inside the NBA studio team of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal.

DIGITAL AND STREAMING
 
The National Hockey League will deliver Road to the NHL Winter Classic presented by Honda to more distribution platforms worldwide. The behind-the-scenes docuseries will take viewers inside the dressing rooms and homes of the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers as they prepare to meet outdoors in the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Citi Field in New York.
For the first time in the Road to the NHL Winter Classic’s six-year history, the NHL will distribute the weekly series on social platforms. Full episodes will be available on YouTube.com/NHL and short-form versions of the 30-minute, four-week series will run on Facebook Watch via the NHL’s Show Page at Facebook.com/BestoftheNHL. Episode 1 will be available on both platforms on Thursday, Dec. 14; episode 2 on Thursday, Dec. 21; episode 3 on Thursday, Dec. 28; and episode 4 on Monday, Jan. 8.

WWE has reached an agreement with Facebook to develop a new in-ring competition, the Mixed Match Challenge, that will stream live exclusively on the social media platform beginning Jan. 16. The series will air on Tuesday nights for 12 weeks in 20-minute episodes, with a mixed tag-team pro wrestling tournament specifically created for the Facebook Watch video service. The deal also builds upon an active Facebook community that WWE operates with nearly 38 million followers. WWE intends to promote the Mixed Match Challenge across its TV, digital and social platforms.

The NBA has struck a short-term partnership with social video service Twitch to live stream up to six NBA G League games per week for the rest of the ’17-18 season, as well as highlights and on-demand feeds.
