Nationwide has booked a return trip to the Super Bowl. The company announced that it will sponsor the broadcast of the game for the first time since 2007. Nationwide, the official insurance sponsor of the NFL, will be sharing more information about its Super Bowl advertising on Facebook and Twitter leading up to the game on February 1.
“We’ve had a big year. We unified our brand under the iconic N and Eagle logo, started a new relationship with one of the biggest stars in sports, Peyton Manning, and deepened our relationship with the NFL,” said Matt Jauchius, Nationwide’s chief marketing officer. “We felt the time was right to return to America’s biggest advertising stage.”

The SEC on CBS notched its sixth straight year as the highest-rated college football TV package, according to the network, averaging a national household rating/share of 4.0/9. Coverage included five of the Top 10 most-watched college football telecasts of the 2014 regular-season, led by Alabama’s win over Missouri in the SEC Championship on Dec. 6, with 12.8 million viewers.
Speaking of ratings, NFL telecasts nabbed the top 4 most-watched shows on television last week, with the FOX national telecast, anchored by Eagles/Seahawks landing at the top of the rankings with 25.9 million average viewers. The Patriots/Chargers matchup on NBC’s Sunday Night Football took second and averaged 21.2 million viewers.
The WNBA unveiled its 2015 slate of games with WNBA Tip-Off 2015 set for June 5 and 24 games on deck. ESPN2, ABC, and NBA TV will televise up to 80 regular-season and postseason contests with ESPN2 tipping off coverage on June 14 with Chicago/Indiana and Minnesota/Phoenix and 11 regular season games overall, as well as the Playoffs and Finals. Meanwhile, NBA TV will top 40 games this season as well as offer postseason coverage.
Networks are battling a class action lawsuit from college football and basketball players, filing a request to dismiss all allegations and claims again the network defendants. According to Deadline, ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, Big Ten Network, SEC Network and Longhorn Network filed the motion together in an effort to avoid the legal battle seeking compensation for the use of the athletes’ likenesses. Meanwhile, according to the report, other defendants filed their own motion, stating, “In further support of the grounds for dismissal submitted by the other Defendants, the Licensing Defendants amplify and add that the United States Supreme Court has already conclusively resolved the antitrust issue in the Complaint, inasmuch as it held that the NCAA’s amateurism rules, which Plaintiffs allege are anti-competitive, do not violate the Sherman Act and, in fact, are pro-competitive.”
Director Kevin Smith is on deck to host weekly recaps of EPIX Presents Road To The NHL Winter Classic and EPIX Presents Road To The NHL Stadium Series. Kevin Smith’s Penalty Box will offer 2-minute episodes that “capture Smith’s distinctive perspective on each week’s highlights” and will run on air and across EPIX and NHL digital platforms the Wednesday following the Tuesday night premiere. Encores of Kevin Smith’s Penalty Box will air leading into the premiere of the following week’s episode.
Speaking of the Winter Classic, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic is programming a series of special programs, expanded gameday shows, and multiplatform news and analysis ahead of the event. The programs include All Access: 2011 Bridgestone Winter Classic starting tomorrow at 10:30p and Growing Up Hockey on Dec. 14 at 9p. In addition, a program covering the logistics of the event, dubbed Building of the Bridgestone Winter Classic will debut Dec. 21 at 9p.
MLB Network’s second annual Social Media Awards will run this Sunday at 8p on the network. Hosted by first baseman for the American League Champion Kansas City Royals Eric Hosmer and MLB Network’s Heidi Watney, the program will offer the winners of categories such as “Best Instagrammer,” “Socially Savvy Rookie” to “Celebrity Fan of the Year.” Clubs topping the list with the most nominees are the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners, each with five.
NBCSN offers two World Series of Fighting world championship bouts on Saturday at 9p highlighted by Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares defending his welterweight title belt against Jon Fitch. Play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice joins analysts Bas Rutten and Joey Varner to call the action.
President Barack Obama joins ESPN Radio’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd today at 11a. The President and Cowherd will discuss topics including the NFL’s conduct policy, NBA players wearing “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts, Obama’s hometown Chicago Bulls and White Sox, and the upcoming healthcare signup deadline.

The NBA and Brazil’s Liga Nacional de Basquete announced a groundbreaking multiyear partnership in a move designed to grow the game of basketball in Brazil. The two organizations with the support of the Confederaçao Brasileira de Basketball will share best practices to increase fan engagement and new business development for the LNB through innovative marketing efforts and enhanced game presentation. Over the next several years, the partnership will expand to encompass additional areas including new business ventures for LNB’s men’s national basketball championship.
Longtime Harlem Globetrotters’ opponent the Washington Generals will honor Louis “Red” Klotz, former player, coach and owner of the squad, by wearing a uniform patch following his passing. In addition, the upcoming season will be dedicated to him. Klotz died on July 12, 2014, at the age of 93. The 2015 tour, which marks year 89 of touring for the Globetrotters – begins on Dec. 26, 2014, and will be the first without Klotz since 1952.
CBS is eyeballing the NFL for its All Access subscription streaming service, according to multiple reports. Company CEO Les Moonves told the crowd at the UBC 42nd Annual Global Media and Communications conference that the service’s initial $5.99 monthly fee would change if the league came aboard.
WWE and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are launching WWE Immortals, a free-to-play mobile game offering Superstar battles in a “fantastically re-imagined” WWE world. The game will be available worldwide on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices in 2015.
NASCAR promoted a quintet of employees to VP in its Daytona Beach and Charlotte offices.
