12/01/17: Jim Nabors dies at age 87

IN THE NEWS

Rebecca Lowe will return to the Olympics for NBC in February, marking her third Olympics for the network. Lowe, who hosts NBC Sports Network’s Premier League coverage, will handle daytime coverage for the PyeongChang based competition. As was announced in February, Mike Tirico will be fronting NBC’s primetime coverage, taking over from long time host Bob Costas. NBC has 176 hours of Olympics coverage including some live coverage across time zones. The PyeongChang Games will be shown on sister nets NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com, and the NBC Sports app. The network has yet to announce the team who will cover the Opening Ceremony, which kicks off February 9. For its coverage of the Summer Games in Rio, Today anchors Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, and Meredith Viera hosted. Lauer’s clearly a no-go; he was fired Wednesday by NBC News after a co-worker alleged sexual assault.

CNN chief Jeff Zucker, who for years was executive producer of NBC’s Today, yesterday called reports of Matt Lauer’s inappropriate sexual behavior “incredibly disturbing,” and said he’d heard “not even a whisper” of any misconduct during the years he worked with Lauer. Speaking during Business Insider’s Ignition conference, Zucker said, “I’ve known Matt for 25 years and didn’t know this Matt… What’s chronicled in Variety and The New York Times is deviant and predatory behavior. It’s just incredibly, incredibly heartbreaking.”
Meanwhile, as more women come forward to accuse Lauer of inappropriate behavior, in the too-little-too-late category of apology, Lauer expressed sorrow and regret in a statement released yesterday. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry,” he said. “As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.”

Who should replace Matt Lauer on Today? Let us know in the Cynopsis

And in more sexual predator news, Russell Simmons has exited his media empire after charges of sexual assault yesterday were leveled against him by Jenny Lumet, the screenwriter and daughter of director Sidney Lumet. Simmons was the chairman of Rush Communications; he cofounded hip-hop record label Def Jam Recordings and created several clothing fashion lines, among other ventures. HBO, which has had a long-standing relationship with Simmons, has dropped him from his signature comedy series on the network. “HBO will be airing All Def Comedy as planned,” the net said in a statement to Deadline. “However, Russell Simmons will not appear in the new series and we will be removing his name from the show moving forward.”

CBS is looking to segue long-running Entertainment Tonight into the VOD world. The service would sit alongside CBS’s other digital platforms, which include CBS All Access.

Jim Nabors, beloved by television audiences for his portrayal of the title character in the series Gomer Pyle, died yesterday in Hawaii. He was 87. Known for absurd over-annunciation of words like “gollllly!” and “shazam” in his character’s singular downhome, lovably irritating manner, Nabors first debuted the Pyle character in 1962 on The Andy Griffith Show, then soared to new heights with his own spinoff, which aired on CBS from 1964-1969. He also achieved success as a crooner, with his 1966 album Jim Nabors Sings with All Your Heart achieving gold-record status. Nabors is survived by his husband, Stan Cadwallader, who confirmed the death to The Associated Press.

At press time Sinclair Broadcast Co. reportedly was close to a deal with the DoJ to sell a portion of its television stations – a condition of approval for its $3.9 billion acquisition of Tribune Media. The DoJ had asked Sinclair to unload 13 Tribune stations; Sinclair has been working to get the number lowered to 10.
