IN THE NEWS

HBO ordered a follow-up to hit miniseries Big Little Lies, starring exec producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon; also returning is writer David E. Kelley. Andrea Arnold (American Honey) will direct. Shortly after HBO shared the Big Little Lies news, the Producers Guild of America reclassified the show from a limited series to an episodic drama series for its 2018 PGA Awards – despite the fact that voting had already begum. Voting will re-start, and votes cast before the change will be annulled. With the order of a second season, Big Little Lies “no longer qualifies” for the Long-Form Programs category, explained the guild in an email to members.

As employees brace for a deal to sell assets possibly being announced this week, 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch and co-executive chairs Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch sent an email to staff that addressed jitters – but did little to relieve them. “While we can’t comment on market speculation, we do want to address the impact we know this is having on all of you,” said the Murdochs. “Uncertainty always breeds unease. In every way, our focus is on our businesses and on the welfare of our colleagues.”

As CBS digital services make meaningful gains, the company has begun a round of layoffs and buyouts at its broadcast and syndication group. But the layoffs will affect fewer than 50 employees, according to Variety. In addition to seeing growth at CBS All Access, Showtime and streaming news channel CBSN, CBS is plotting the launch of streamer CBS Sports HQ.

TV One is suspending production of NewsOne Now as a daily morning news show. The final live show is slated for Thursday, December 21 at 7a.  “We had to make a tough decision to suspend a show we all love,” said interim GM Michelle L. Rice, adding that the show “struggled to attract a wide audience.” Host and managing editor Roland Martin will continue to be featured across Urban One platforms. NewsOne Now launched in 2013.

CNN corrected a report on Friday that said presidential candidate Donald Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr., received a web address and decryption key providing access to hacked WikiLeaks documents on September 4, 2016. In fact the Trumps received the email on September 14, the day after the documents were made public. CNN said that since the erroneous date had been confirmed by 2 sources, and the reporters had followed editorial guidelines before correcting the error, no disciplinary action would be taken. That didn’t appease POTUS, who tweeted, “Fake News CNN made a vicious and purposeful mistake yesterday…. Watch to see if @CNN fires those responsible, or was it just gross incompetence?”

There’s been a lot of debate on TV news nets about Senator Al Franken’s decision to step down amid allegations (and in one case, visual proof) of sexual misbehavior. Do you think Franken was right to resign? Let us know in the Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Responding to a post asking if she had nothing to say about her disgraced Today co-host Matt Lauer, with whom she worked for 10 years, Katie Couric played it classy. “It’s incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I’m ready to,” she replied. “Thanks for your interest.”

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is compiling a special Upfronts Guide, to help media buyers and planners get the information they need to navigate the network landscape during crunch time. The guide will come out in early 2018, ahead of the events and meetings that help determine buying decisions, and live on the Cynopsis web site along with our other robust Upfronts coverage. To be included, media companies must submit a list of networks with average audience/target demo/one line description or mission statement for the network/event details (if applicable)/contact info and a logo by January 11 to [email protected]. For sponsorship opportunities, please contact [email protected].

Coming home winners from the 33rd Annual IDA Documentary Awards were PBS’s Independent Lens for Best Curated Series, HBO’s The Defiant Ones for Best Limited Series, and BBC America’s Planet Earth II for Best Episodic Series.
