Yahoo may be in a state of flux, but apparently that’s not stopping it from churning out new products.  The company has introduced the Yahoo Video Guide, a new app allowing users to search for TV shows and movies across over 30 online streaming services. The app can then launch video playback by deep-linking into other apps. Yahoo Video Guide is available for both iOS and Android. At the moment, it’s only available to U.S. users.

Pretty soon, you may just forget that Time Inc. publishes magazines. The company announced that its original video content has launched on Yahoo, Hulu, and Zealot Networks. All told, Time Inc. now works with 18 partners, including AOL/AOL On and CBS Local Digital Media.

 

ADVERTISING


Did Twitter just become more valuable to advertisers? The company announced that it’s testing a new feature that will show ads to people who aren’t registered Twitter users. There are many people (about 500 million, actually) who regularly see tweets – often through Google search, or through shared texts and emails – even thought they don’t have accounts. Now, users who click on a tweet through one of those avenues might just see an ad on that tweet page, or on the profile of the tweet’s creator. The ads will run in Twitter’s “promoted Tweet” format.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING


It’s a simple formula: Lily Tomlin + Jane Fonda = Renewal. Netflix has picked up its comedy Grace and Frankie for a third season. And as for season two? That hasn’t even premiered yet.

 

DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS


Vine celeb Matthew Espinosa is set to star in a new feature-length comedy film from CDS Films, the film production arm of the MCN Collective Digital Studio. The untitled film, about a teen pop star, will be directed by Joshua Caldwell (South Beath). No one tell Espinosa, but the movie will be significantly longer than six seconds.

Kid-oriented digital video network batteryPOP has launched a new streaming video app for the Samsung Kids platform. Created in partnership with Fingerprint Digital, the app features web series, short films, and music videos for kids 4-12. The Samsung Kids platform is available exclusively on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite tablet.

RESEARCH


In its Q3 Total Audience Report, Nielsen found that American live TV viewership is falling, while access to SVOD services like Netflix and Hulu is quickly rising. (Shocking, right?) SVOD penetration rose from 40% to 46%; DVR penetration, meanwhile, remained at 49%, the same as in Nielsen’s last Total Audience Report. The findings suggest that SVOD use will likely surpass DVR use sometime in the not-too-distant future. There are several other notable findings in the report – learn more here.

Yum. Food-related content is gaining in popularity, especially on YouTube and Facebook, according to the video analytics company Tubular Labs. The company found that food-related videos have generated 23 billion views in 2015, an increase of 170% year-over-year from 2014. Together, YouTube and Facebook account for almost 90% of those views. YouTube leads the pack in video uploads – 52K to Facebook’s 34K. You can check out the full study here.

More and more these days, people just really like video games – playing them, watching them, and even honoring them. The numbers are in on last week’s second annual Game Awards, and the ceremony, which live-streamed exclusively on digital platforms, improved on last year’s viewership by roughly 20%, rising from about 1.9M viewers to about 2.3M viewers. Most significantly, viewership on YouTube and Twitch increased by more than 40% from last year, though the awards streamed on several other platforms as well. So what caused the increase? “I attribute the viewership increase to growing awareness,” said Geoff Keighley, Creator and Producer of the Game Awards, in an email to Cynopsis Digital. “[Our] partnership with [Verizon streaming service] Go90 broadened our marketing and reach, and the game companies gave us increased promotion to their audiences.  We also worked closely with a bunch of new partners like SnapChat to drive awareness of the show.”

EXECUTIVE MOVES


Disney/ABC Television Group has elevated Skarpi Hedinsson to the position of CTO. He’ll be responsible for developing tech strategies and solutions for the company’s products and services, including its digital technologies. He’ll be partnering with Renu Thomas, the company’s EVP of Media Operations, Engineering and IT. Most recently, Hedinsson served as the company’s SVP of Technology and Platform, Digital Media, where helped develop the company’s websites and apps, including its TV Everywhere services.

Scripps Networks Interactive, best known for developing lifestyle content for digital platforms and TV, announced the launch of Scripps Lifestyle Studios, a new in-house editorial unit designed to develop lifestyle content across multiple platforms and apps. The studio will also work to create advertising solutions for digital formats, working with Scripps-owned networks such as HGTV and Food Network, to produce complementary content and advertising. Content will include live digital events, video, and social media. Scripps exec Vikki Neil will lead the division as Scripps Lifestyle Studios SVP and General Manager


Video advertising and monetization platform Teads has named Brett Wein as its Head of Strategic Accounts for North America. He will work to develop and manage relationships with clients and advertising agencies. Wein previously served as Industry Lead at Facebook.
