Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 11, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference yesterday that he would like to expand original programming to as many as 20 new series, or a new season of programming released every two weeks. He also mentioned that Netflix is unlikely to release ratings, because it “has been bad for [the] creativity of television.”

HBO’s a la carte service might arrive in time for the next season of Game of Thrones. Time Warner announced the service may be ready by April, with CEO Jeff Bewkes outlining three options being considered: Partner with existing cable companies to sell HBO on top of broadband-only packages they offer; team up with new partners such as Amazon to make HBO available through digital platforms, or sell HBO directly to consumers.
Big Tent Entertainment partnered with Brain Power Studio to launch the new comedy pet channel Something Fuzzy. The channel will mix original programming and user-generated content featuring pop culture comedy sketches, funny animal videos, such as Around the Waterbowl, Something Fuzzy Special Reports, Rea with the Guineas, Pet Cribs and Super Hero Pet Squad. The companies are also bringing The Orchard on board to help build its subscription base.
U By Kortex ordered a second season of Carmilla from bShift2 and Smokebomb Entertainment, and will return to the VervegirlTV YouTube channel with 36 episodes in 2015. The 12-part branded series is a scripted series with a modern spin on the classic vampire novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. The first season launched in August, and hit 17 million minutes watched and 7.5 million views across the first 36 eps and additional branded vids. The season finale garnered 101,000 views in 24 hours and brought 11.6 tweets per minute with the #SaveCarmilla campaign.
The star of YouTube’s “fat girl” dance videos, Whitney Thore, has landed at TLC. My Big Fat Fabulous Life, chronicling Thore’s war on intolerance and determination to embrace her body, premieres Tuesday, January 13 at 10p.

Instagram hit a major milestone yesterday, and topped 300 million active users; an increase from the 200 million reported in March. In comparison, Twitter accounted for 281 million active users as of the third quarter. Instagram founder Kevin Systrom told the Wall Street Journal that his company’s biggest rivals, surprisingly, are not apps like Yik Yak or Twitter. “I think about how we’re competing for dollars…[with] print and TV. There are billions spent every year on traditional media [but] the majority of people are spending more time on the internet, especially mobile.” Instagram recently integrated video ads in October, and introduced “verified badges” for celebrities and brands. Facebook bought the photo-sharing app for $1 billion in 2012.
The yearly YouTube campaign that raises money for charities, Project for Awesome, started yesterday and will last until Dec. 16. The Vlogbrothers – Hank and John Green – aim to raise a minimum of $500,000 for charities to “decrease world suck,” while offering donors perks like a special edition of John Green’s Young Adult novel The Fault in Our Stars and a YT calendar (with baby pictures of popular YT talent). A two-day livestream to promote the campaign will be hosted by the duo, and will include as yet unnamed guests.
While news broadcasts may be holding steady, their credibility with young viewers isn’t. Linda Ong of TruthCo has some solutions: Check them out in Cynsiders.
