12.10.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday December 10, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The 2015 college football season cleared the uprights for FOX Sports, which posted ratings increases for the sports this year, topped by last weekend’s Big Ten Championship Game. The Michigan State win drew 9.8 million viewers to the channel with a 5.7/11 household rating/share. Combined with the rest of the channel’s games this year, the sport grew 19% in rating (1.9 vs. 1.6) and 15% in viewership (3.0 million vs. 2.6 million). Overall, FOX and FS1 posted an average viewership increase of +12% this season over 2014. Season highlights included FOX’s highest-rated and most-watched regular season game ever, with Stanford’s win over Notre Dame on Nov. 28, which drew a 4.3/11 with more than 7.3 million viewers.
Still unable to go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters, Mark Hamill is now slated to host an ESPN Star Wars special connecting the world of sports with the world of Star Wars. The half-hour special spotlights “the sport and athleticism behind the choreography and training utilized in the making of Star Wars lightsaber duels,” and will air on Dec. 15 at 7p on ESPN. Star Wars: Evolution of the Lightsaber Duel saw the crew visit the 2015 Kendo World Championships in Japan to gather interviews and information to explain the genesis of kendo and how it applies to Star Wars lightsaber duels.
Univision Deportes unveiled its musical lineup for the upcoming by renowned Premios Univision Deportes on Sunday on Univision and UDN. Artists will include Calibre 50, Luis Coronel, Cristian Daniel, Farruko, Espinoza Paz and Daddy Yankee are set to take the stage that evening. Meanwhile, Reykon and Bebe Rexha will perform Univision Deportes’ official song for 2015 Gold Cup, “All the Way.” Plus, appearing for the first time together on stage, Víctor Manuelle joins Diego Torres to perform “Hoy es Domingo.”
Outside Television announced plans for four new original primetime series for early 2016, and announced that veterans Outlook, Locals and Dispatches would all return to the lineup. Upcoming program In Search of Speed will see the channel team with the USSA and feature access to both the U.S. men’s and women’s ski teams and Olympic or World champions including Mikaela Shiffrin, Ted Ligety, Julia Mancuso and Lindsey Vonn. Other originals will include Maverick Moments, uniting “some of the Outside world’s most renowned filmmakers and the all-star surfers who inspire them to achieve a nearly impossible goal discover and ride the biggest wave on the planet while also capturing it all on film.” Liftoff features BASE jumper and wing suit flyer Jokke Sommer and big wave surfer and buddy Niccollo Porcella, while UnReal is based upon last summer’s mountain biking film of the same name.
The Boston Bruins are getting into the kids’ game, announcing new children’s television series “Bruins Academy” for NESN. The series will run 30 minutes, once per month starting Dec. 20 at 3:30p, hosted by Charlie Moore and featuring BostonBruins.com reporter Caryn Switaj in a move to teach kids about the sport. “Bruins Academy is a continuation of the team’s long and enthusiastic history of supporting youth hockey,” said Sean McGrail, NESN’s President & CEO. “We are excited to bring this fun and engaging new show to young fans throughout New England.”
Anchored by Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown, Eddie George, Archie Griffin, George Rogers and Gino Torretta, SiriusXM serves up a special live broadcast on Dec. 11 at 1p on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, ahead of the 2015 Heisman Trophy presentation On Saturday, to discuss this year’s finalists. The long-form discussion will feature the players discussing their experiences, emotions and memories of winning college football’s most prestigious individual award. Matt Leinart will also be a part of the program.

X Games Aspen 2016 announced plans to offer visitors four festival villages from Jan. 28 31, blending musical artists, interactive gaming, athlete meet ‘n greets, giveaways and more fan-friendly activities. This year’s offerings will see six artists perform, including deadmau5, DJ SNAKE, KYGO, Nas, Run The Jewels and Twenty One Pilots at the Sound Factory village. Meanwhile, the Galleria will deliver giveaways, autographs and entertainment, with live DJ’s performing all weekend long from the awards stage. The Gaming Shack will host the Xbox Halo 5 Tournament along with partner activation tents. Finally, the Playground delivers the likes of slapshot hockey, basketball double shot and the World of X Games Cinema.
NCAA President Mark Emmert told reporters that the organization is able to block ads from daily fantasy sites during March Madness. “I understand why we’re in this place but I don’t like it,” Emmert stated, noting the they will continue to prevent ads from the industry whenever possible.
Alibaba E-Auto announced an 8-year deal with FIFA Club World Cup. Deal points will see the tournament now be known as the “FIFA Club World Cup Presented by Alibaba E-Auto” through 2022 and receive brand presence at stadiums and during global television coverage of the events. Also, a representative from Alibaba Group will present a Most Valuable Player award at each game, including the tournament MVP after the championship game.
Fanatics locked in an exclusive memorabilia agreement with UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor. USA Volleyball locked in a deal with Sports Illustrated Play, the Time Inc. business dedicated to youth and amateur sports, to serve as the National Governing Body’s "Official Club Management Software Partner." The deal will enable USA Volleyball club directors and the junior volleyball community to use Sports Illustrated Play’s proprietary software tools to allow player sign-up, roster management, scheduling and TeamWALL, a team-focused web and mobile app used by team managers, parents and players. “Our partnership with Sports Illustrated Play will enhance the off-the-court playing experience for our club directors and junior members, creating a win-win-win scenario for all involved," USA Volleyball Secretary General Kerry Klostermann said.
