IN THE NEWS

Wednesday’s shooting rampage in San Bernardino, CA, drew viewers to cable news networks in droves, according to Nielsen ratings. Fox News Channel averaged 3.8 million viewers in the time period, a 129 percent jump compared to the previous Wednesday, while CNN logged 2.6 million viewers between 2p Wednesday and 1a Thursday, a massive 280 percent increase, and MSNBC averaged 1 million viewers, an 111 percent increase vs. the prior week.

Coldplay is confirmed for the halftime gig at Super Bowl 50, airing February 7 on CBS. They’ll take the field the day before their new album drops in the U.S.

European pay TV platform Sky invested in LA-based TV4 Entertainment, owner of a slate of special-interest television nets including All Warrior Network, DocComTV and combat sports channel Ultimate Champion Network. Networks are distributed across online platforms including Amazon, Hulu, Roku, Sony and YouTube.

Just days after Discovery Communications bought a 3.4 percent stake in Lionsgate, the companies announced Lionsgate’s new “exclusive long-term agreement” to distribute Discovery content on DVD in the U.S.

VR animation company Baobab Studios got some love from investors including Comcast Ventures, HTC, Samsung Ventures, Chernin Group, Zynga co-founder Marc Pincus and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel for a $6 million round of Series A funding. Baobab co-founders are Maureen Fan, former VP of games at Zynga, and Eric Darnell, who directed DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar and Antz.

In other VR news… Fusion, which launched a VR unit in August, entered into a content and technology collaboration with VR company Littlstar to create immersive stories and technology in 360 degrees.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Harrow County, a drama adaptation of the Dark Horse comic penned by Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and illustrated by Tyler Crook (Bad Blood), is in development at Syfy.

Tom Welling (Smallville) is headed back to television with both starring role and producer credits for CIA drama Section 13, in development at CBS. The series is from Smallville producer Warner Bros. TV and Tom Welling Productions; it’s written by Carla Kettner (Bones).

ITV ordered drama The Halcyon, which centers around a bustling five-star London hotel during WWII. Series was created by Charlotte Jones (Trust Me) and is being created at Left Bank Pictures (Wallander), exec-produced by Sharon Hughff (Strike Back) and produced by Chris Croucher (Downton Abbey).

Three original projects are in the pipe for 2016 at Pop: a comedy series starring television personality and New Kids on the Block bandmate Joey McIntyre; Celebrity Escape Room, a competition show set in the immersive environment of the new craze in live action gaming; and comedic talker I Watch It With My Girlfriend, about fan-favorite, female-skewing television hits viewed from the perspective of men.

BBC One ordered pre-apocalyptic drama Hard Sun from creator Neil Cross (Luther), to be produced by Kate Harwood’s Euston Films. Filming begins next year in London.

Bolt those doors! Production has begun on season 2 of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead in the Baja peninsula in Mexico.

COMING UP

Even more Coldplay: The band will stop by CBS’ The Late Show with James Corden on Monday, December 7, for the first U.S. late-night appearance in support of their new album, A Head Full Of Dreams. Plus: Coldplay and One Direction will perform on The X Factor UK season 12 finale airing on AXS TV on Monday, December 14, at 8p. The two-night finale kicks off Sunday, December 13.

Rapper Future will sit down for a one-on-one during Fuse’s original series Revealed airing Saturday, December 5, at 7p. He’ll discuss why his second album Honest wasn’t truly honest, and how he won back his core fans.

Viewers craving more Oz after NBC’s airing of The Wiz Live are directed to Bounce TV on Saturday, December 5, for an airing of the 1978 theatrical version of The Wiz starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor at 4p.

HGTV will showcase an all-premiere lineup on New Year’s Day that includes new series, one-hour specials, fresh episodes of viewer favorites and the network’s daylong Twitter party with HGTV and DIY Network stars. Festivities kick off at 11a, with the Rose Parade 2016, hosted by Drew and Jonathan Scott, aka the Property Brothers, and entertainment journalist Nancy O’Dell.

Nickelodeon will premiere CG-animated adventure Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir on Sunday, December 6, at noon. Series follows Marinette and Adrien, junior high school students who transform into superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir to stop a master villain from trying to take over the world.

RETURNING SHOWS

WE tv’s resident power couple returns with the new season of Tamar & Vince, premiering Thursday, December 10, at 10p, starring Tamar Braxton and her “husband-ger” Vince Herbert.

A rose by any other name. Former Bachelorette heartthrob Ben Higgins steps into the spotlight for season 20 of ABC’s The Bachelor, premiering Monday, January 4. Season tidbits include a date devised by Ice Cube and Kevin Hart and a challenge issued by members of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Soccer Champions.

Austin City Limits will kick off the second half of season 41 on January 2 with Alabama Shakes and Vintage Trouble sharing an episode. Other artists on tap include Kendrick Lamar, Ryan Adams, Sleater-Kinney, Shakey Graves, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Leon Bridges.

The boys are back. Showtime unscripted series Gigolos returns Thursday, March 17, at 11p. The eight half-hour eps return to Las Vegas to spotlight the sultry, salacious antics of last season’s fan favorites.

HBO dropped the first teaser for the sixth season of Game of Thrones, which returns in April–and it’s an all-Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) affair.

CASTING

Grammy winner Tip “T.I.” Harris (Ant-Man, Get Hard, Entourage), Mekhi Phifer (ER, House of Lies); James Purefoy (The Following, Rome) Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game, The Good Wife); Lane Garrison (Prison Break, Bonnie & Clyde, Camp X-Ray); Emayatzy Corinealdi (Miles Ahead, Hand of God) and G. Hannelius (Dog with a Blog, Surviving Suburbia) joined the case of A+E Networks reboot of Roots. Previously announced cast members include Academy Award winners Forest Whitaker and Anna Paquin, plus Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose and Laurence Fishburne.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Entertainment One licensed AMC Studios’ martial arts drama Into the Badlands to LeTV in Mainland China; it will launch on the network in early 2016.

Singapore-based Bomanbridge Media is in a renewal deal with South India entertainment channel Zee Tamil for the second season of DNA.

RATINGS

The third season premiere of HGTV’s Fixer Upper on Tuesday, December 1 at 9p delivered a 1.2 rating among A25-54 and attracted more than 4.1 million total viewers. That places it among the highest-rated season premieres in HGTV history for A25-54 primetime ratings.

Discovery’s Alaskan Bush People was Wednesday’s No. 1 cable telecast on November 25 in Total Viewers (4.7m) and across all 25-54s, all 18-49s and Persons and M18-34 in Live +3. For the third straight week, the series at 9p was Wednesday’s top unscripted cable telecast in Total Viewers P2+, and across all 25-54s and all 18-49s.

Discovery freshman series Men, Women, Wild at 10p set series highs across numerous demos, including Men 25-54 and Total Viewers.

The session ending November 22 was a big one for Judge Judy (7.9 live + same day national Nielsen rating, up 5 percent from the week before), which hit a milestone 1,000 consecutive weeks–dating back to 1996–as the No. 1 court show.  
 
Meanwhile, entertainment news magazines were on fire in what was the third full week of the key November sweep thanks to Charlie Sheen’s revelation that he is HIV-positive: Entertainment Tonight, which hit a new season high 3.5, up 6 percent, led the magazine category for the ninth week in a row. Access Hollywood, which also saw a new season high of 1.9, up 19 percent, tied TMZ, which hit its season high 1.9, up 6 percent.

Among the new first run strips, Crime Watch Daily (0.9, steady) had no trouble topping the rookie field for the 10th consecutive week while remaining at its season high.

UP’s original movie My One Christmas Wish premiere on Sunday, November 29, at 7p was the network’s highest-rated movie premiere of 2015 among key demographic groups and ranked No. 2 all-time in household delivery and W25-54.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: Fox delivered the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 3.0/10, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. For the 8p hour, CBS’ Survivor was on top with 2.1/7, followed by ABC’s The Middle and The Goldbergs, which each drew 2.0/7, at 8 and 8:30. NBC’s Christmas at Rockefeller Center rounded out third with a 1.5/5 for the first half hour, then tied at 1.6/5 with Fox’s Rosewood at 8:30. Fox took the lead at 9p with 4.5/14 for Empire, followed by ABC’s Modern Family with 2.4/7 from 9-9:30 and black-ish’s 1.6/5, with CBS’ Criminal Minds in third. CBS was in first at 10 with 1.5/5 for Code Black; NBC was second with 1.4/5 for SNL Christmas, trailed by ABC’s Nashville with 0.9/3.

Alan Yentob is out as creative director of the BBC following an ongoing investigation into his involvement with the charity group Kids Company and ensuing conflicts of interest. Director of television Danny Cohen left the BBC abruptly October.

Brent Montgomery has been appointed CEO of ITV America, formerly ITV Studios US Group. Montgomery is the founder and most recently CEO of Leftfield Entertainment.
