Does Univision Communications have a buyer? Spanish-language media company Hemisphere Media, private-equity firm Platimum Equity and former Viacom Inc. CFO Wade Davis have all expressed interest in acquiring the company, reports the Wall Street Journal. In July, Univision said its board was “reviewing strategic options.”
 
TiVo abandoned plans to split its product and patent-licensing businesses , and will instead merge with Xperi. The $3 billion all-stock deal matches TiVo’s consumer products, entertainment metadata and patent portfolio with Xperi’s entertainment and semiconductor products. “This landmark combination brings together two highly complementary companies poised to set the industry standard for user experiences across the digital value chain,” said Jon Kirchner, CEO of Xperi, who will serve as CEO of the new company.
 
Facebook announced Thursday that it plans to prohibit misinformation about where, when and how to participate in the 2020 census. The ban, which will cover posts from politicians as well as advertisers, is intended to “promote an accurate count of every person in the country.”

Fox News Channel named Ed Henry as the co-anchor of America’s Newsroom (weekdays 9a-12p). Henry joins co-anchor Sandra Smith starting January 20. Most recently, Henry served as FNC’s chief national correspondent, and since November has anchored an hour of breaking news coverage on America’s News HQ. 
 
Court TV promoted crime and justice reporter Ted Rowlands to network anchor. Ted is one of the most-seasoned true-crime journalists in the business and his insight, interviewing and reporting in the field since our launch have been outstanding,” said Court TV vice president and managing editor Scott Tufts. 
 
The Producers Guild of America announced nominees for its children’s, shortform TV and sports categories , as well as for its inaugural Innovation Award. Battling out in the kids category will be Carmen Sandiego, Green Eggs and Ham, Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Sesame Street. Up for shortform are Billy on the Street with Billy Eichner, Born This Way, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Creating Saturday Night Live, and Under a Rock with Tig Notaro.
 
The third year of The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation and NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations “Project Innovation” competitive grant challenge begins January 10, with the opening of applications. The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation and NBC/Telemundo owned stations in 11 markets will award a total of $2.475 million in grants to non-profit organizations that are helping to move their communities forward through programs that foster the “Next Generation Storytellers,” a “Culture of Inclusion,” “Youth Education,” and “Community Engagement.”

On average, males continue to out-earn their female counterparts by +27%, translating to a difference of $31,200.
 
Compared to Cynopsis’ 2018 study, this represents an increase of +10% in the gender gap. Sadly, this disparity is prevalent across all titles and departments in the study.
 
PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
The Bradys are a gift that keeps on giving for HGTV. On the heels of hit series A Very Brady Renovation comes Eve Plumb in Generation Renovation, a pilot set to air Tuesday, December 24 at 11p. “You know me from TV and film, and, of course, as Jan Brady from The Brady Bunch,” said Plumb. “Most people don’t know that I love older homes, was on a design review board and have redone more than 10 homes of my own over the years.” 
 
A yet-to-be-titled drama series based on the Stephen King short story Jerusalem’s Lot , starring Adrian Brody (The Pianist), has been greenlit by Epix. Ten-part series is executive produced by Donald De Line (Ready Player One, Wayward Pines); Jason Filardi and Peter Filardi serve as executive producers and showrunners. It’s the first series from EPIX Productions.
 
Apple inked a deal with Sharon Horgan , creator of Catastrophe and Divorce, reports Deadline, in a deal out of its UK division that covers all future projects Horgan writes.
 
MTV’s next No Filter season will focus on internet beauty and comedian Bretman Rock, who boasts 13.9 million Instagram followers and 6.8 million subscribers on YouTube. MTV No Filter: Bretman Rock is slated to premiere in early 2020 on MTV YouTube.  
 
OWN renewed Season of a Man , from Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin (Moonlight), for season two. “Tarell McCraney has brought us a gift with this series and masterfully added a beautiful new hue to our palette of dramatic storytelling on OWN,” said OWN President Tina Perry.
 
Also picked up for season two is BET crime drama Family Business , based on author Carl Weber’s series and set to stream on BET+. “We are thrilled to dig even deeper with Carl Weber and continue our amazing partnership to bring his best-selling book series to life for his fans,” said Devin Griffin, GM of BET+. “BET+ is committed to providing creators the freedom to tell unique Black stories that will resonate and entertain audiences, and this next season further demonstrates that commitment.”
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
Richard Hammond’s Big makes its Science Channel debut on Wednesday, February 12 at 10p. The nine-parter, spotlighting the planet’s biggest structures, premiered on Discovery UK on January 15. “ I love making engineering shows because I’m fascinated by the science and people behind some truly amazing feats,” said Hammond.  
 
Returning the Favor is returning for a fourth run on Facebook Watch , following Mike Rowe and his team as they shine a light on everyday heroes, starting January 13. “ Not since Dirty Jobs have I had such a great opportunity to visit every state in this terrific country, and introduce viewers to Americans worth knowing – selfless people doing nice things in their community, with no thought of reward,” said Rowe. “Facebook has provided us with a massive platform, and Hudsun Media is producing a fantastic program that gets better with each episode. Here, in Season 4, I’m committed to not screwing this up. Wish me well!”
 
Stormy days ahead for The Weather Channel : Season eight of Highway Through Hell, focused on winter rescues, returns Sunday, January 5. Heavy Rescue: 401 comes back for season four on Sunday, February 9, following heavy rescue vehicles on the world’s busiest highway, the 401.
 
Killer Bods explores what happens when fitness experts turn deadly , starting Wednesday, January 1 at 8p on ID. Also on the true crime net comes season two of Dead of Winter on Thursday, January 2 at 9p, and the arrival of season five of Evil Lives Here on Sunday, January 5 at 9p.
 
New “scripted reality” crime drama Longmire premieres on Outdoor Channel on Monday, December 30 at 9p. Wardens returns with a new season on Monday, February 3 at 8:30p.
 
A Year in Music returns to AXS TV for season two on Thursday, January 23 at 8:30p. Hosts for the rock culture series this time around include Tommy Chong, Downtown Julie Brown, Matt Pinfield and iHeartRadio’s Carla Marie & Anthony.
 
COMING UP
 
GetTV is airing the two original episodes of All in the Family and Good Times tonight at 9p that ABC re-created and aired Thursday night as part of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience .”  
 
Showtime put the TV premieres of three feature films on its calendar: Five Feet Apart on Monday, December 30 at 10p; On the Basis of Sex on Wednesday, January 1 at 9p; and The Upside on Saturday, January 4 at 9p.
 
Unscripted will have its day at NATPE on Tuesday, January 21 in Miami. Among the sessions and events focused on unscripted programming are a keynote with founder of CuriosityStream and The Discovery Channel, John Hendricks, and the panel, “What Viewers Want in 2020: Cable Content.”
 
Bravo’s Married to Medicine season seven, three-part reunion kicks off Sunday, December 29 at 9p and 10p, concluding Sunday, January 5 at 9p.
 
Lending an assist on Fox’s New Year’s Eve With Steve Harvey: Live from Times Square will be co-hosts Maria Menounos and NFLer Rob Gronkowski, as well performers LL Cool J, DJ Z-Trip, the Chainsmokers, the Lumineers, Florida Georgia Line, Backstreet Boys, and Tyga and the Killers. The evening will also include The Village People attempting to set a record for the largest YMCA dance, and a WWE match with Roman Reigns. Action starts at 8p from NYC, with a tape-delayed edition for the Mountain and Pacific time zones.
 
The final night of competition for The American Rescue Dog Show is set for Sunday, January 19 in Santa Monica. The show will air on Hallmark Channel, date tba.
 
Cinelatino will close out the year with a lineup of box-office hits beginning with 2018’s #5 Spanish-language movie at the Mexican box office, Hasta Que la Boda Nos Separe on Sunday, December 22, at 9:15 p and 11p.

Sign-up momentum for Disney+ continues a month after the service’s launch, according to 7Park Data, which reports the cumulative gross sign-ups index one day after launch through December 8was 4x that of launch. Other highlights include: Monthly plans are the most common, accounting for 70% of subscriptions; pre-sales and Cyber Monday drove annual subscriptions; 56% of pre-sales were for at least a one year subscription; and iTunes drove the most sign ups outside of Disney +.
 
INSP’s culinary/travel series State Plate , hosted by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, is now available on the Roku Channel. All three seasons are set to stream.

Video management software platform Telaria and Rubicon Project , which offers technology to automate buying and selling online, have agreed to merge. “Our businesses are highly complementary, and when combined, are a powerful, strategic alternative to the walled gardens, which have been frustrating both buyers and sellers due to their lack of transparency, innovation bottlenecks, and conflicted business models,” Telaria CEO Mark Zagorski said.
 
Out-of-home planning agency Kinetic Canada has joined OOH association DPAA. Said Kinetic Canada CEO Kevin McDonald, “We love what DPAA is doing to grow the digital out-of-home industry and are proud to be supporting these efforts.”

Facebook bought its first Super Bowl ad , to promote its Groups feature. The 60-second spot will feature Chris Rock and Sylvester Stallone. The social media giant has upped its global ad spend in an effort to rebuild consumer trust after controversies over misinformation on the platform and concerns over privacy.
 
A+E Networks is teaming with Dish and Adcuratio to enable its networks to deliver national ads on a household-by-household basis for the 9.5 million viewers of Dish’s satellite TV platform. “This partnership continues the transformation of live linear TV from the upper funnel heavyweight it has always been into a full funnel champion, helping our partners better plan, effectively execute, and more accurately measure ROI,” said Peter Olsen, A+E’s EVP of ad sales. Adcuratio Media founder and CEO Harish Narasimhan said his company, which is powering the addressable technology, is also working with two other major network groups to have their cable TV assets enabled during the first half of 2020.
 
Fox News Media has formed a strategic partnership with branded content agency HEVE. The partnership is aimed at enabling Fox News Media to provide advertisers with branding opportunities to reach its unduplicated audience and enhance the viewing experience. “The power of this partnership is the combination of Fox News Media’s engaged audience and HEVE’s creative strategy, empathetic storytelling and predictive insights,” said HEVE CEO Chris Hercik.

Canada’s Corus Entertainment announced greenlights and renewals for Global Originals. From SEVEN24 Films and Lark Productions, new Global Original series Family Law begins production in Vancouver this spring. Global also ordered second seasons, in advance of their broadcast premieres, of 2020 dramas Nurses, from eOne and ICF, and Shaftesbury’s Departure.
 
KTH in South Korea has acquired 504 episodes of Skyship Entertainment content , which includes live action and animated content for young children.
 
Nine months after its debut on Amazon, Good Omens has a premiere date on BBC Two: January 15. The drama, produced by BBC Studios, Amazon Studios, Blank Corporation and Narrativia, was originally intended to launch on the UK channel this year.
 
Following its premiere on UK’s Channel 4, DRG announced international deals for docu-series My Grandparents’ War . Format option deals were reached with two Banijay Group companies, KM Production in France and Cuarzo Producciones in Spain, with the latter expected to focus on the Spanish Civil War, instead of World War II.

Univision reports it is closing 2019 having out-delivered at least one or more of the English-language broadcast networks on five out of every seven nights among A18-34 (71% of the time), and with a median age of 46, attracting a primetime audience that is 13 years younger than the average of the major English-language broadcast networks. In addition, over 90% of  Univision’s primetime A18-49 audience watch live (90%) and the commercials (95%).

Bravo ranks #1 in primetime among F18-49 and F25-54 in cable. This is the third year in a row. Bravo’s on demand viewership hit new highs in 2019 with 427M VOD views and 222M live streams, up double digits from the year prior.

Oxygen’s true crime programming has grown its total viewership for three consecutive years, up double digits since its 2017 rebrand, while Oxygen.com continues to rank as the #1 most popular crime website out of its competitive set.


Airing opposite the season finales of Fox’s The Masked Singer and CBS’ Survivor and impeachment coverage on cable news nets from 8-9:30p, ABC’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times’ grew from its first half-hour to its final half-hour by 3% in Total Viewers  (to 6.1 million) and 9% among A18-49 (to 1.2/6). It was ABC’s biggest audience in the Wednesday before Christmas in ten years.
 
Fox News Channel was the top-rated cable news network for special coverage of President Donald Trump’s impeachment debate and vote by the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday, December 18, garnering 2.4 million viewers and 458,000 among A25-54.
