PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Paul McCartney and record producer Rick Rubin
are behind a six-part docuseries that goes behind the scenes of McCartney’s transcendent musical journey, from his first composition through the Beatles years and beyond. McCartney’s next studio album, McCartney III, drops this Friday, December 18. Endeavor Content is financing the project and handling worldwide sales. Film 45 is producing with Frank Marshall, whose “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” doc just bowed on HBO and HBO Max.

World Cup winner and Olympic gold medalist Megan Rapinoe’s memoir “One Life” will be adapted as a scripted series. Sony Pictures Television optioned the rights to the book, which Rapinoe wrote with Emma Brockes and details her life and soccer career.

Project is being developed by Alex Karpovsky. The Patrick Raden Keefe-hosted podcast bowed in May from Pod Save America producer Crooked Media and Pineapple Street Studios.

Kate Beckinsale will topline Paramount+ dark comedy “Guilty Party.” From Funny or Die, the story follows a discredited journalist desperate to salvage her career by glomming on to the story of a young mother sentenced to life in prison for murdering her husband. Beckinsale replaces Isla Fisher, who originally was cast in the role but pulled out due to pandemic-related circumstances.

A sequel to classic sitcom “Night Court” is in development at NBC, with original star John Larroquette returning in the role of Dan Fielding. “Big Bang Theory” alum Melissa Rauch will exec-produce the series, which follows Judge Abby Stone, daughter of original series character Harry Stone, following in her father’s footsteps presiding over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court.

CBS is developing “The Brand,” a drama from Kirk Rudell (“Human Discoveries”), Alex Gibney and his Jigsaw Productions, and CBS Studios. Stratton serves as showrunner.

Jared Leto reportedly is in talks to star in the Apple TV+ podcast adaptation “WeCrashed.” According to Deadline, discussions are ongoing for the Oscar winner to topline the series from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, to be penned and exec-produced by Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello. Hosted by David Brown, the podcast series detailed the story of WeWork and its founders.

A TV adaptation of M. K. England’s 2019 book “The Disasters with Supergirl” is in development at the CW, with writer Derek Simon. Project is from Berlanti Productions, 5 More Minutes Productions and Warner Bros TV.

A four-part docuseries based on Pope Francis-penned “Sharing The Wisdom Of Time” is in the works at Netflix. Simona Ercolani and production house Stand By Me are behind the series, which features woman and men over 70 sharing their stories with young filmmakers from the same country and is slated to be released in 2021.

A limited series based on the life of Rick James is in development at Universal Studios’ UCP. “Super Freak” (working title), written by Randy McKinnon, is a funkadelic mix of music biopic and true crime, chronicling James’ plans for a comeback in the early ‘90s amid a heated trial that threatened to destroy his legacy. The story will touch on themes of race, privilege and the gray area of image vs. reality for celebrities. Ty James, daughter of the late James, will exec produce.

Gunpowder & Sky is exec-producing “After the Murder of Albert Lima,” from director/producer Aengus James (“American Harmony”). The true-crime documentary thriller will be released as a Crackle Original in the first quarter of 2021.
