PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
CBS Ordered “Secret Celebrity Renovation,” a reality series hosted by Nischelle Turner of “Entertainment Tonight.” Talent across sports, music and entertainment return to their hometowns to make heartfelt home renovation gifts. Musician/host Eve, comedian Wayne Brady, NBA star Chris Paul and Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith are among the first batch of celebs giving back. The series is produced by Robert Horowitz’s Juma Entertainment. “We’ve been working on this format for quite some time. Three years ago we tested the concept in the CBS weekend afternoon sports block using athletes and a renovation for their hometown hero or mentor,” Robert Horowitz, president of JUMA Entertainment, tells Cynopsis. “The success with two specials showed us that by combining a feel-good renovation give-back format with a heavy dose of celebrity hometown storytelling, we had the making of a compelling prime time concept. And when we pitched the CBS’ entertainment execs the following year, it was the hometown beat and true connection between celebrity and recipient that seemed to resonate most in the room.”
Fox acquired CTV unscripted series “Holmes Family Effect,” which stars home renovation contractor and TV personality Mike Holmes for a midseason 2020-21 premiere. From Bell Media, the four-part series is slated to premiere in Canada on CTV in early 2021.
“Sinister” writer/directors Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill signed a first-look television deal with Blumhouse, via their new Crooked Highway shingle. Under the two-year pact, they’ll develop projects for Blumhouse TV. Additionally, Sherryl Clark has been named president of production for Crooked Highway.
Amazon ordered to series dark comedy “I’m a Virgo,” from “Sorry to Bother You” scribe/director Boots Riley. Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”) stars in the series, the coming of age tale of 13-foot-tall Black man who lives in Oakland, CA, which is a co-production between “The Morning Show” producer Media Res and Amazon Studios.
In related news, Amazon Studios acquired Field Trip Productions-produced film “Uncle Wick,” which follows a chronically unpopular 16-year-old who gets entangled in an international assassination plot while his uncle, a retired undercover assassin is looking after him one weekend. The script is to be penned by Gabe Delahaye, and will be directed by Will Graham.
Television creator Matt Miller renewed his exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. TV, and as part of the deal will exec-produce, write and direct “Peacemaker,” HBO Max’s spinoff of James Gunn’s upcoming “The Suicide Squad” movie. The eight-ep series, starring John Cena, hails from Gunn, producer Peter Safran and Warner Bros. TV.
In his first lead role on British TV, Christopher Walken will star in “The Offenders” (working title), a six-part series for BBC and Amazon Prime Video. From Stephen Merchant and Elgin James, the “crime thriller-meets-state-of-the-nation commentary” plot hails from Mum producer ITV Studios’ Big Talk and Merchant’s Four Eyes. Walken is one of seven leads in the project.
Hulu acquired US rights to dramatic feature “False Positive,” co-written, produced and starring Ilana Glazer. Film, which also stars Justin Theroux and Pierce Brosnan, follows a woman who uncovers a sinister underside to the fertility doctor who’d been ostensibly helping her to achieve her dream of becoming a mother. John Lee directs.
“Irma Vep”, a limited series starring and exec-produced by Alicia Vikander, got the green light at HBO. Written and directed by Olivier Assayas, the project is loosely based on the 1996 film and follows an American movie star who moves to Paris after being disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup. The series continues the partnership between HBO and A24, whose recent collaborations include the “Euphoria.”
BlackBox Multimedia and Mediapro Studio are teaming up for frontline medical drama “58 Seconds.” From Oscar-nominated writing team Jeremy Brock (“The Last King of Scotland”) and Paul Unwin (“Breathless”), creators of the world’s longest-running med drama “Casualty,” the series follows the private and professional lives of a group of humanitarian relief workers.
