IN THE NEWS
Chris Wallace is leaving Fox News to take a job at upcoming streaming service CNN+. “After decades in broadcast and cable news, I am excited to explore the world of streaming,” said Wallace, who spent 18 years at FNC. “I look forward to the new freedom and flexibility streaming affords in interviewing major figures across the news landscape—and finding new ways to tell stories.” Wallace’s show, “Fox News Sunday,” “will continue with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named,” said a statement from Fox News Media.
A new bill introduced last week would require social media platforms with at least 25 million monthly users to share data with university-affiliated researchers. “It’s increasingly clear that more transparency is needed so that the billions of people who use Facebook, Twitter, and similar platforms can fully understand the impact of those tradeoffs,” said Senator Chris Coons (D-Delaware). The bill authorizes the Federal Trade Commission to bring enforcement actions against social media platforms that fail to provide the data.
Time spent on AVOD has surpassed time spent on SVOD, according to TVision’s “The State of CTV” report. From the first quarter of 2021 to the third quarter, time spent on AVOD rose 9.3%, to a 38% share, while time spent on SVOD slipped 8.6%, to 32%. But while the data suggests advertisers should include CTV in their strategies, attention rates are lower on CTV than linear, notes TVision. “Advertisers can find more engaged viewers by optimizing for frequency, ad length, content alignment and more,” said the report.
Wool cap-wearing Monkee Michael Nesmith died December 10 of heart failure. He was 78. In addition to shooting to fame in 1966-68 series “The Monkees,” Nesmith is credited with conceiving the first music video program, “PopClips,” which aired on Nickelodeon in 1980-81. He wrapped a tour with surviving band member Micky Dolenz last month. “I’m so grateful that we could spend the last couple of months together doing what we loved best – singing, laughing, and doing shtick,” said Dolenz. “I’ll miss it all so much. Especially the shtick. Rest in peace, Nez.”

Peacock’s “Wolf Like Me” premieres Thursday, January 13.
