12/13/18: The NFL is bring the draft to Las Vegas

Good morning. It’s Thursday December 13, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

On the day that news broke that the NFL is now open to finding a casino/betting partner for the league, the organization announced that 85th NFL Draft will take place in Las Vegas for the first time on April 23-25, 2020. The announcement was made in Dallas at the NFL’s December meeting following a review of the proposal by the Super Bowl & Major Events Committee and full ownership.  The 2019 draft is slated to take place in Nashville. “The NFL Draft is one of the most-anticipated events of the year and we are excited to take it to Las Vegas,” said Commissioner Goodell. “We look forward to working with the Raiders, Las Vegas officials and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to create an unforgettable week-long celebration
The league also announced the five teams who will play “home” games as part of the NFL’s international slate next season, with four games in London and one in Mexico City. Teams will be the Jaguars, Rams, Buccaneers, Raiders and Chargers as hosts.

Veteran NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray will now adorn FOX colors, signing on for the 2019 season as a NASCAR analyst for NASCAR RACE HUB, and NASCAR RACEDAY, among other duties. “As FOX Sports built the new virtual studio in Charlotte, we were equally invested in hiring the right personalities for our NASCAR programming,” said Steve Craddock, SVP of NASCAR Production, FOX Sports. “Jamie McMurray brings a fresh-off-the-track perspective and a modest likeability everyone can relate to. He is a great addition to our team.”
Ahead of the 2019 “Unleash The Beast” season, PBR and CBS Sports released their TV schedule for the first half of the new year, with the action beginning Jan. 4-5 with the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden presented by Ariat at Madison Square Garden in New York City. CBS will broadcast rides from nine events, including three PBR Majors and a Global Cup event, starting with the action from MSG, as well as the Winstar World Casino and Resort PBR Global Cup USA from AT&T Stadium on Feb. 9-10; Iron Cowboy in Los Angeles on Feb. 22-23; and the Last Cowboy Standing in Wyoming on July 22-23. CBS Sports Network will televise more than 100 hours of PBR action, including 36 rounds of coverage across the 18-event first-half.
Monday Night Football saw the Seahawk’s win over the Vikings average 11,462,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN Deportes, according to Nielsen. The network took the night among all networks, broadcast or cable, in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos (18-34, 18-49, 25-54). Through 14 weeks (15 games), MNF on ESPN is up 8% over last year, averaging 11,725,000 viewers.
Liga MX action scored for Univision as the network’s presentation of the Apertura 2018 semifinals averaged 1.6 million Total Viewers 2+ and 812,000 Adults 18-49 in primetime and delivered the two most-watched Liga MX matches of the season on any network. The first leg of the semifinal featuring America/UNAM was the highest-rated Liga MX match of the season with an average of 1.8 million Total Viewers.
Around the dial, Telemundo Deportes coverage of the controversial second leg of Copa Libertadores Final from Sunday averaged 631,000 total viewers and 335,000 adults 18-49.
The 2018 Heisman Trophy Ceremony Presented by Nissan on ESPN drew a Nielsen total live audience of 2,928,000 viewers, up 33% from last year’s same telecast and the ceremony’s highest audience since 2015.
Tonight sees NBCSN carry Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year Awards at 9p, with honorees that include Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year, the Golden State Warriors along with other recipients that include Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award winner John Cena; the 2018 SI Kids SportsKid of the Year, Leah Hayes; Sports Illustrated’s Breakout of the Year, Alvin Kamara; Performer of the Year Award winner, Aaron Donald; and Inspiration of the Year award winner, Rachael Denhollander. The event is hosted by comedian Joel McHale and features guest appearances by Jerry Rice, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ike Barinholtz, Laila Ali,Christian Yelich, and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.
ESPN serves up coverage of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship tonight with BTU/Stanford at 7p and Nebraska/Illinois at 9p. The championship match will air Saturday at 9p on ESPN2. Lead volleyball analyst Karch Kiraly, play-by-play announcer Paul Sunderland and sideline staple Holly Rowe will cover the action for both the semifinals and the championship match.
FOX Sports announced that Daniel Cormier and Paul Felder join blow-by-blow announcer Jon Anik to call FOX UFC Fight Night: Lee vs. Iaquinta 2 on Saturday on FOX, FS1 and the FOX Sports app. UFC bantamweight Marlon “Chito” Vera and Victor Davila call the fights in Spanish on FOX Deportes. In addition, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and retired middleweight champion Michael Bisping serve as analysts with lead UFC host Karyn Bryant for programming while Megan Olivi reports and interviews fighters.
The third edition of The Shop from HBO Sports and Uninterrupted, starring LeBron James and Maverick Carter will debut Dec. 21 at 10p on the network. Joining James and Carter will be Mary J. Blige, Lena Waithe, Nas, plus Jimmy Kimmel, Todd Gurley, Chris Bosh and Ice Cube.

The NBA is pumping up the holiday spirit with a new NBA Xmas video titled “The NBA Lights Up Christmas Day” that offers a lightshow of the marquee players and games scheduled for Christmas Day. Codere and the NBA announced a new multiyear partnership that will make Codere, a leading Spanish multinational company in the private gaming sector, the first official gaming partner of the NBA in Mexico. The partnership will be promoted in retail locations across Mexico, on Codere’s assets and the NBA’s online platforms, including NBA.com, the NBA App and NBA Mexico social media platforms. Codere will use official NBA betting data and branding across its land-based and digital sports betting offerings throughout Mexico.  Throughout the partnership, Codere and the NBA will also collaborate on best-in-class practices to protect the integrity of NBA games.
International media and entertainment company Outdoor Sportsman Group partnered with digital media technology company ViewLift for the global relaunch of OSG’s video on-demand streaming service MyOutdoorTV on Web, Mobile, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox applications. “ViewLift helps Outdoor Sportsman Group distribute our exclusive, streaming service to a broader audience,” MyOutdoorTV Senior Vice President and General Manager, Sean Luxton said. “We are extremely pleased with our partnership and look forward to many successes.”

The NFL’s Workplace Diversity Committee presented modifications to strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of the NFL’s Rooney Rule to increase diversity and inclusion. Changes now include: clubs must interview at least one diverse candidate from the Career Development Advisory Panel list or a diverse candidate not currently employed by the club; clubs must continue best practice recommendation of considering multiple diverse candidates; clubs must maintain complete records and furnish to the league upon Commissioner’s request; and if final decision-maker is involved in the beginning, he/she must be involved through the conclusion of the process.
The Undefeated, ESPN’s content initiative for sports, race and culture, reached a multi-year contract extension with senior NFL writer Jason Reid to continue as the platform’s lead journalist covering the National Football League.
