The worlds of traditional sports and esports are coming together again , as it is reported that  Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. co-founder Joe Tsai is expanding his sports empire, buying a minority stake in competitive gaming franchise G2 Esports. The owner of the Brooklyn Nets, Barclays Center, the WNBA Liberty and the NLL San Diego Seals is investing $10 million, valuing the Berlin-based franchise at around $100 million, according to multiple reports. One of the world’s most valuable esports franchises, G2 has 10 teams that play a number of different games, including Fortnite, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rocket League. It also has a franchised slot in Europe’s main League of Legends circuit, operated by publisher Riot Games Inc.
 
PROGRAMMING
 
CBS Sports’ Week 14 NFL doubleheader game coverage on Sunday, Dec. 8 scored in viewership with its most-watched Sunday regular-season game in four years. The NFL On CBS’ national 4:25 p.m. game window was seen by an average of 28.113 million viewers, up +17% versus last year’s comparable eighth doubleheader coverage (23.976 million; Week 16 – 12/23/18) and also was the most-watched program of the week on television (12/2-8/19).  Sunday’s national game window was highlighted by the Kansas City-New England game. Through 14 weeks of the NFL season, The NFL On CBS’ season-to-date viewership is its highest in three years averaging 17.714 million viewers, up +8% (2016; 17.914 million).
 
Hot Wheels and Nitro World Games are teaming up for two all-new events: the Academy mentor program and the Hot Wheels Nitro Junior Games competition. These events will showcase the next generation of athletes and highlight how action sports can teach kids to meet challenges head-on. Both will feature elite up-and-coming skaters and riders 16-years old and younger in Skate Park, Skate Street, BMX Park and Scooter Park.
 
NBC Sports’ Premier League Mornings Live fan fest will return for its second installment of the season, with a weekend of activity in Miami Beach on Saturday, Dec. 14, and Sunday, Dec. 15. Across the two-day festival, registered fans can get involved in NBC Sports’ live on-site broadcast, meet former Premier League soccer stars and take part in free on-site activities. NBC Sports’ studio team of host Rebecca Lowe and analysts Robbie Earle, Kyle Martino and Robbie Mustoe will broadcast Premier League Mornings Live, presented by Barclays, live from the event on NBCSN beginning at 7 a.m. ET on Saturday, December 14, and 7 a.m. ET on Sunday, December 15. In addition, Miami-based Telemundo Deportes will have its biggest-ever fan festival presence with special production on location, including pre-game coverage featuring on-air experts Andres Cantor, Manuel Sol, Miguel Gurwitz and Copan Alvarez alongside Ana Jurka, co-host of Telemundo Deportes’ news and entertainment nightly show, Titulares y Más.

The NBA announced the official opening of the first-ever NBA Store in Mexico. The 2,023 square-foot retail space is located in the heart of Polanco in Mexico City. The Capitals and Devils Backbone Brewing Company also unveiled a new can design for Capit-Ale, a brew that debuted in September. Springfield, Va., native Cole Hogan won the contest to have his original design displayed on the can.
 
Ready Nutrition has been named the Official Sports Drink of the Amateur Athletic Union. Ready Nutrition will be the official sports drink provider of the AAU. The AAU is the largest, volunteer based, multi -sport organization in the United States with nearly 700,000 athletes competing in local, regional and national championships across 41 sports. They supplant Gatorade as the official AAU drink.
 
IndyCar named Global Medical Response the title sponsor of the road-course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which will be held May 9 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
 
DIGITAL, DATA AND  TECH
 
Sportradar and PrizeLogic announced a strategic partnership designed to provide brands with a turnkey solution to activate their sport sponsorships and engage consumers. The partnership marries Sportradar’s worldwide real-time sports data with PrizeLogic’s interactive consumer engagement capabilities to create real-time gamification experiences .
 
The PGA Tour has partnered with Joe Hand Promotions to make its PGA Tour Live OTT service available to restaurants, golf clubs and sports bars for the first time.
 
ESPORTS
 
Twitch is teaming up with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and Epic Games for the Twitch Rivals Streamer Bowl event series. The three-part series starts with NFL players and Twitch streamers showcasing their talents over four shows with Fortnite gameplay and interviews. This is followed by a draft event with Twitch streamers vying for top pick to draft NFL players as their tournament partner, and then a duos tournament with a $500,000 charity prize pool live from Miami during Super Bowl LIV week. All activities will be streamed from Twitch.tv/TwitchRivals and from every player’s personal Twitch channel.
 
UBG esports is expanding with the introduction of the PUBG Global Series. In 2020, PUBG will host four world class PUBG esports events hosted in major cities around the world in April, July, October, and November. Each event will feature 32 teams and larger prize pools supplemented by crowdfunding. The first three events will serve as both major live events unto themselves and qualification tournaments for the final event of the year, PUBG Global Championship.
