IN THE NEWS

CNN fired anchor Chris Cuomo on Saturday. Cuomo was suspended on Tuesday for his involvement in brother Andrew Cuomo’s handling of sexual harassment allegations while he was governor of New York. On Wednesday, an allegation of sexual misconduct against Chris Cuomo surfaced. “Based on the report we received regarding Chris’s conduct with his brother’s defense, we had cause to terminate,” said a CNN spokesperson. “When new allegations came to us this week, we took them seriously, and saw no reason to delay taking immediate action.” A spokesperson for Cuomo denied the new allegations.

Fox has renewed Will Arnett-hosted “LEGO Masters” for a third season. The reality competition was the number one co-viewed unscripted broadcast series of the summer. “I’m excited to be a part of TV’s longest running, unscripted, Danish toy building show,” said Arnett, who also serves as an executive producer.

The Animation Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract last week, but will head back to the bargaining table next year. The guild’s contract, first set to expire in July, has been extended to allow more time to reach an agreement with the AMPTP. Sticking points include better terms for streaming shows, and significant pay increases for writers and lower-paid crafts.

BuzzFeed is going public today through a merger with SPAC 890 5th Avenue Partners, the first digital media property to do so. The deal includes acquiring youth-focused Complex Networks. BuzzFeed will receive a cash infusion of $16.2 million, versus the $287.5 million previously held in trust for it, after many investors withdrew their funds. BuzzFeed also raised $150 million in convertible note financing as part of the SPAC deal. It’s been a bumpy ride for BuzzFeed – a bargaining session is planned for tomorrow with the BuzzFeed News Union, which announced a walkout last week amid contract talks.

The Ad Council held its annual dinner last week in NYC and raised a record-breaking $6.4 million to support the organization and its national social impact campaigns. “Over the past two years we have seen our industry’s most innovative and impactful work yet, as we pivoted to address the significant needs of living through a global pandemic,” said Lisa Sherman, President and CEO of the Ad Council. “The impact of this unprecedented industry collaboration changed millions of lives and saved even more. We are truly better together.”

Fox Corporation ant the T. Howard Foundation are partnering to offer technology internships in media-related industries to diverse and underrepresented college students and young professionals. The Diversity-TECH (Train, Empower, Connect & Hire) aims to increase the number of diverse students with STEM-related backgrounds who are hired in the media and entertainment industry. The initiative, sponsored by Fox, is slated to begin on January 1.
