IN THE NEWS
“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, announcing that Warner Bros. Pictures Group has committed to releasing its entire 2021 film slate on HBO Max in the US concurrent with each movie’s domestic theatrical release. Following the one month HBO Max access period, each film will leave the platform and continue theatrically in the US and international territories. “With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films,” said Sarnoff. “We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors.”
Warner Bros. Pictures Group’s 2021 expected release slate currently includes “The Little Things,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Tom & Jerry,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Dune,” and “Matrix 4,” among others. “Our content is extremely valuable, unless it’s sitting on a shelf not being seen by anyone,” said Jason Kilar, CEO, WarnerMedia. “We believe this approach serves our fans, supports exhibitors and filmmakers, and enhances the HBO Max experience, creating value for all.”
The Walt Disney Co. is the latest media company to eliminate positions as part of a restructuring. AMC Networks is aligning its UMC streaming service and WE tv reality network under a common leadership team, run by UMC’s former Chief Content Officer, Brett Dismuke, who will now serve as GM of UMC and WE tv. “The strong growth we have achieved at UMC is based on our ability to dial into the lives our subscribers are living and deliver stories and content that they care about,” Dismuke said. “The same is true of WE tv, a network that has been successful by bringing fans real and relatable shows, stories and characters. Now we have the ability to further explore the synergies that exist between these two dynamic platforms and build on the success UMC and WE tv have already achieved.”

When it comes to representation of diverse identity groups on-screen, streaming shows do better than broadcast or cable, according to a new Nielsen study, “Being Seen on Screen: Diverse Representation and Inclusion on TV.” SVOD video has a healthy representation of Blacks, Hispanics and Asians, according to the study, which helps explain “why more diverse audiences are subscribing the streaming services than the general population.” Despite the fact that women make up 52% of the US population, they appear on screen 48.9% of the time on SVOD, 37.8% on cable and 33% on broadcast. And while women over 50 make up 20% of the population, their share of screen is just 8%.
Facebook said it is removing posts that contain false claims about COVID-19 vaccines, rather than just making them less visible on news feeds. “This is another way that we are applying our policy to remove misinformation about the virus that could lead to imminent physical harm,” said the company in a blog post. “This could include false claims about the safety, efficacy, ingredients or side effects of the vaccines.” Facebook will also send people to its COVID-19 Information Center, for verified updates.
In more Facebook news, the Trump administration is suing the social media giant, claiming it illegally reserved thousands of jobs for immigrants instead of looking for qualified Americans for 2600 jobs. The lawsuit follows a nearly two-year investigation into Facebook’s practices. “Facebook has been cooperating with the DOJ in its review of this issue and while we dispute the allegations in the complaint, we cannot comment further on pending litigation,” said a spokesperson.
AMC spin-off “Fear the Walking Dead” was renewed for season seven. “The past is dead…but the future is bright,” tweeted the show.
Disney XD’s “DuckTales” will end with season three. “The talented creative team, led by Matt Youngberg and Francisco Angones, have delivered exceptional storytelling with uniquely reimagined characters for three seasons of 75 episodes and more than 15 shorts,” said a Disney XD spokesperson. “While physical production is wrapping…fans will get an epic season finale in 2021.”

TECH TALK
SpotX released its “2021 Global Video Advertising Trends” report. Key findings include: • Ad spend is following new consumer habits and will flow into OTT and CTV faster than expected. • With programmatic, addressable linear TV is ready for scale. With more inventory available and the programmatic pipes built out, expect to see more linear TV budgets transacted digitally. For programmers, this means tapping into the growing pool of programmatic TV spend that is expected to reach $6.69 billion by 2021 in the US, up from $2.77 billion in 2019. • Expect a surge in programmatic guaranteed campaigns. While advertisers used to treat TV and OTT ad buys separately, they are increasingly considering them together, and the trend is clearly moving towards all TV being transacted digitally. “As we move further into the connected decade, incumbents and new entrants alike will invest in the future of video, while new technologies will quickly emerge to support the evolution,” said Kelly McMahon, SVP, Global Operations at SpotX.
