Two days after Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly announced his net was giving up pilot season, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler acknowledged at the TCA press tour that while “pilot season isn’t perfect,” it works for her network. “It’s frustrating,” acknowledged Tessler, “but also it’s exciting.” The CW is staying the game, too. Remarked CW president Mark Pedowitz at the TCA, “Pilot season works well for us.”

IN THE NEWS

Pedowitz also announced that a digital spinoff of Veronica Mars will air on the CW Seed site, with series creator Rob Thomas onboard. For a show that got canceled in 2007, Veronca’s getting a lot of action: a Kickstarter-funded Veronica film will be released in March, and the drama just started streaming on Amazon Prime

Parents will have the ability to program a channel for their children with My Nickelodeon Junior, on deck from Viacom. Mom and Dad will be able to customize the interactive channel, specifying their content preferences, reports the Wall Street Journal. The interactive channel will debut on Verizon‘s Fios service.

CBS renewed every show in its daytime schedule. Coming back are Let’s Make a Deal, The Price Is Right, The Young and the Restless (the number one daytime drama for 25 years received a pick-up through the 2017 season), The Bold and the Beautiful and The Talk, which recently delivered its best-ever fourth quarter in viewers and W25-54.

Honda U.K.’s “Hands” ad, voiced by Garrison Keillor, won the TV advertising awards given by The One Club at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, as well as the award for online videos shown on YouTube for “Ayrton Senna 1989”. Toyota was a co-winner with BMW for Experiential Advertising.

Telemundo Media announced Wednesday that it will hold its annual Upfront presentation on Tuesday, May 13 in NYC’s Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Time Warner Center.

 COMING UP

OWN‘s The Diamond Collar follows a former Mafia street enforcer whose career veered in a dramatically different direction: dog grooming (tip: “Always ask if your dog groomer uses cage drying, which can be very dangerous”). Docu-series debuts Friday, January 17 at 10p.

The premiere date for Bravo‘s sudsy drama, Southern Charm, is Monday, March 3 at 10p – but fans eager to check out the series about the exclusive world of six Charleston, S.C. singles can catch a 30-minute preview special on Monday, February 3 at 11:30p.

Two old pals and their sons, along with a collection of ragtag employees, restore vintage cars in new Discovery docu-series Rod N Wheels. Intuitive Entertainment production premieres Monday, January 27 at 10p.

CW acquired Labyrinth, starring John Hurt and Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey). Jumping between modern and medieval France, the four-hour event series focuses on the search by two women for the Holy Grail. CW premiere date for the Tandem Communications production, filmed on location in France and South Africa, is TBA.

Also on tap at CW: Two reality series, Barber Battle and Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, Barber has stylists competing for hairstyle honors; in Penn & Teller, magicians try to trick the master musicians for a chance to perform with them in Vegas.

Revolt documentary Wale: I Am follows rapper Wale on a journey to Africa to discover his roots, as he meets his family for the first time. Story premieres on the Millennial music net Monday, January 20 at 10p, followed by a live Ustream with the singer at 11p.

 RETURNING SERIES

CBS announced premiere dates for two warhorse reality competitions. Amazing Race returns for its 24th go-round on Sunday, February 23 at 8p, after racking up an average 10.03 million viewers in the fall. Survivor comes back for season 28 on Wednesday, February 26 at 8p. The fall edition of TV’s longest-running reality competition averaged 11.58 million viewers, and ranked as the number two reality show in broadcast among A18-49.

Also on the CBS calendar: Summer event series Under the Dome, returning for season two Monday, June 30 at 10p, and new Halle Berry series Extant, debuting Wednesday, July 2 at 9p.

HBO‘s holding on to Bill Maher. Days before the season 12 premiere of Real Time with Bill Maher, the premium cabler announced the show has been renewed for season 13. “His irreverent wit and fearless insights make him the perfect observer for these unpredictable times,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo of comedian/political commentator Maher, who returns with his show Friday, January 17 at 10p.

Paul Rudd (This is 40) will appear in Adam Scott‘s (Parks and Recreation) fourth The Greatest Event in Television History special for Adult Swim, reports EW, reenacting a classic show’s title sequence. Show airs Thursday at midnight.

RATINGS

How did CBS feel about Monday night’s number for new drama Intelligence, which slid from a solid 2.4 A18-49 in a prime post-NCIS preview slot, to 1.1 in the demo in its regular Monday-at-10p berth? “That sucked,” said creator/exec producer Michael Seitzman at the TCA, pointing out the show would get another shot a sampling on Saturday.

ABC‘s The Goldbergs earned a 1.8/5 rating in A18-49 and 4.9 million viewers at 9p Tuesday night, its most-watched ep since October 8. At 10p, Killer Women dropped to a .7/2 rating among A18-49, down from its low-rated .9 premiere last week.

Modern Family hit new highs in syndication among A18-34 (3.2), A18-49 (3.2) and A25-54 (3.5) the week of December 30. The ABC comedy is number one or number two across all demos, including number one in A18-34.

Divorce Court, now in its fifteenth season, claims the highest growth year-over-year of any syndicated program. With a 1.9 HH rating, the show rose 36 percent (to tie Steve Harvey) from the same period a year ago.

Paternity Court also had a good week, scoring its highest ratings ever (1.1HH).
