IN THE NEWS

Today co-anchor Matt Lauer was fired from NBC News following a detailed complaint from a colleague, received Monday night, alleging inappropriate sexual behavior during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The accuser said the behavior continued after the Games, in the workplace. A shaken Savannah Guthrie shared news of the termination on the morning show on Tuesday, saying she was “heartbroken” for Lauer as well as the “brave colleague who came forward to tell her story.” Lauer started at Today in 1992 filling in as news reader, taking over for Bryant Gumble as Katie Couric’s co-anchor in 1997.

Civil rights attorney Ari Wilkenfeld said he is representing Lauer’s alleged victim, and offered a statement describing a meeting that he and his client had with representatives from NBC’s Human Resources and Legal Departments on Monday night that lasted several hours. “Our impression at this point is that NBC acted quickly, as all companies should, when confronted with credible allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace,” said Wilkenfeld. “While I am encouraged by NBC’s response to date, I am in awe of the courage my client showed to be the first to raise a complaint and to do so without making any demands other than the company do the right thing.” Wilkenfeld’s client was not the only female subjected to misconduct by Lauer, according to a 2-month investigation conducted by Variety that alleges a pattern of lewd comments, behavior and texts.

Former Today co-anchor Ann Curry, in a previously scheduled interview with People, said she was “still processing” Lauer’s speedy fall from grace, but noted, “The battle lines are now clear. We need to move this revolution forward and make our workplaces safe.” Curry’s brief stint as Lauer’s co-anchor ended in 2012. Fox News transplant Megyn Kelly, new host of the 9a hour on Today, said Lauer has been “a friend and kind and supportive to me in my transition to NBC News, and I see the anguish on my colleagues’ faces. But when this happens, what we don’t see is the pain on the faces of those who found the courage to come forward.”

At least two more women stepped forward with complaints about Lauer on Wednesday, according to the New York Times, including one woman who told the paper Lauer called her to his office locked the door and assaulted her.

Who should replace Matt Lauer as co-anchor of Today? Let us know what you think in the Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Andrew Kreisberg, exec producer the CW/Warner Bros. Television’s Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow and The Flash, has been cut loose less than 3 weeks after being suspended over allegations of sexual harassment. “After a thorough investigation, Warner Bros. Television Group has terminated Andrew Kreisberg’s employment, effective immediately,” said WB. Greg Berlanti will assume additional responsibilities on The Flash and Supergirl. Nineteen men and women leveled accusations of misconduct over a period of several years.

AT&T “has gotten to the very heart of the DOJ’s case” to block the AT&T/ Time Warner merger with its promise of no blackouts for 7 years, and offer of arbitration to distributors when Turner carriage deals expire. “It becomes much harder to reject the deal when AT&T is committing to exactly the same behavioral remedy to which Comcast committed,” said analysts Craig Moffett and Michael Nathanson in a research note. The Justice Department has sued to block the deal on antitrust grounds, and will see AT&T in court for a pre-trial hearing on December 7.

Speaking in NYC Wednesday, AT&T president and CEO Randall Stephenson said that while his company is indeed “prepared to make concessions” to get the Time Warner deal done, “we’re going to do nothing that would lend credence to the idea that we’re actually making concessions to address somebody’s concerns with CNN.” Regulators had earlier suggested AT&T could win approval if CNN wasn’t part of the picture.

Showtime picked up comedy SMILF for a second season. SMILF debuted with the biggest premiere week audience for a new Showtime comedy since 2012. Freshman finale airs Sunday, December 31 at 10p.

HC2 Network has acquired Spanish-language network Azteca America. The deal “marks an exciting and transformative milestone in Azteca America’s history,” said Manuel Abud, president and CEO, Azteca America. “We believe HC2 Network’s long-term investment and resources better position us, on a greater scale, to be an industry leader delivering best-in-class programming, production value and marketing solutions to our audiences and partners alike.”

Yesterday, approximately 150 people were informed their jobs were being eliminated at ESPN. Staffers were warned the boom was about to lower in a morning email from network president John Skipper, who said the majority of the job cuts were in studio production, digital content and technology, “and they generally reflect decisions to do less in certain instances and redirect resources.”

To the surprise of no one, USA and Universal Cable Productions announced Meghan Markle will be leaving Suits at the end of season 7. “We want to send our most heartfelt congratulations to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their engagement,” said the companies in a statement. “Meghan has been a member of our family for seven years and it has been a joy to work with her.” Season 8 has not yet been ordered.

CNN announced it would not be attending the annual White House Christmas Party for the Press. “In light of the President’s continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN, we do not feel it is appropriate to celebrate with him as his invited guests,” said the news net. Can’t blame CNN for not feeling welcome – two days earlier, Trump had tweeted, “We should have a contest as to which of the networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favorite President (me). They are all bad.”

NBC is developing a family comedy from Alex Brightman (School of Rock: The Musical), Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton) and Universal Television, centered on a twentysomething who moves back home with his parents in NYC.

WWE Studios, the WWE’s motion picture production arm, is expanding to include scripted, non-scripted, family and animated TV and digital content. “Our new expanded focus on television and digital continues to push WWE Studios as a multi-platform production company, with the ability to create original content for global distribution,” said Michael Luisi, president WWE Studios.

Eight-parter premieres Monday, January 15 at 9p.
