11.25.15 Good morning. It’s Wednesday November 25, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports is ringing in the New Year via a deeper media rights deal with Premier Boxing Champions that will now see multiple primetime Saturday evening bouts on the FOX broadcast network and FOX Deportes in 2016 in addition to its cards on FS1. PBC on FOX debuts Jan. 23 with a two-hour show that will be anchored by Danny “Swift” Garcia/Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero live from Staples Center in Los Angeles. The card marks the first of three PBC cards scheduled to appear on FOX in primetime during 2016. Brian Kenny hosts the inaugural edition with Gus Johnson calling the action ringside. On FOX Deportes, Daniel Ponce de Leon joins Jessi Losada and Ricardo Celis to call the action.
“We’re thrilled to present the first professional boxing on FOX in almost 20 years with Premier Boxing Champions’ exciting primetime Saturday shows,” said David Nathanson, FOX Sports Head of Business Operations. “With the success of the PBC’s Tuesday night boxing series on FS1 and FOX Deportes, we knew boxing would make a great addition to FOX alongside the FOX Sports portfolio that includes the world’s premier sports properties.”
The Patriots’ victory on ESPN’s Monday Night Football pushed the network to a win for the night among all networks in viewers, households and all key male and adult demos. The Bills/Patriots matchup averaged an 8.9 US household rating and 14,256,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. In Buffalo, the game delivered a 15.1 rating on ESPN and a 27.1 on WKBW-ABC, for a combined 42.2 rating in the market. In Boston, the game delivered a 10.9 rating on ESPN and a 31.5 on WMUR-ABC and WCVB-ABC, for a combined 42.4 rating in the market.
Meanwhile, beIN Sports’ coverage of “El Clasico” between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona on November 21 reached an average of 1,874,582 total viewers with 1,106,137 total viewers on beIN Sports en Español and 768,445 total viewers on beIN Sports. That a spike of 26% YOY and a 33% rise in A18-49 total viewership.
NASCAR announced that Drew Carey would host the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards next week Wynn Las Vegas. The event, on Dec. 4, will also feature a lineup of performances from musical artists Andy Grammer, Sam Hunt, Rachel Platten, and Sabrina Carpenter. Red carpet coverage begins at 8p on NBCSN, Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, followed by the awards broadcast on NBCSN at 9p.
Speaking of awards, ESPN laid out plans for The Home Depot 25th Anniversary College Football Awards on Dec. 10 on the network. Beginning at 7p, the show, relocating to the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, highlights the achievements of college football student-athletes in 2015 with twenty-four players selected as finalists for the nine National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) awards. Derrick Henry (Alabama), Christian McCaffery (Stanford) and Deshaun Watson (Clemson) are each finalists for two awards. The show will be hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, and joined by Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Tom Rinaldi and Samantha Ponder. Red carpet coverage begins at 6p on ESPNU.
ESPN’s unveiled programming for the Football Championship Subdivision Playoff beginning Nov. 28. Over the next several weeks, ESPN will cover all 23 games from the championship, including eight second-round games (Dec. 5), the quarterfinals (Dec. 11-12), semifinals (Dec. 18-19) and final (Jan. 9). ESPN3 will stream the first and second rounds as well as two of the quarterfinal games with the remaining two quarterfinals running on ESPN or ESPN2, the semifinals on ESPN2 and ESPNU and the final on ESPN2 from Frisco, Texas.

Amid negotiations for a Thursday Night Football package, currently with CBS, the NFL is reportedly now in discussions with networks about buying a stake in its cable channel as part of the bidding process, according to the NY Post. CBS, NBC, FOX and Turner are reportedly most interested in the package.
Speaking of the league, NFL Network’s new documentary series, The Timeline from NFL Films, debuts on Dec. 3 with a look at Brett Favre’s return to Lambeau Field. The series features six, hour-long episodes chronicling “seminal moments that formed the NFL’s storied past, shape the present and, in somecases, set the stage for the future.” The debut one-hour show features sitdown interviews with Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy, Ted Thompson and more, as well as never before seen footage of Favre at his home in Mississippi and his return to Lambeau Field.

Motel 6 is checking into the Cactus Bowl, signing a deal to serve as title sponsor of the postseason college football game. The Motel 6 Cactus Bowl will be held on January 2, 2016 at 8:15 MT. Operated by the Fiesta Bowl organization, the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl will be carried on ESPN and will feature two teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences.
Pilot Flying J locked in a deal with Bristol Motor Speedway to serve as title sponsor of the 2016 football game pitting Virginia Tech/Tennessee in what will now be known as the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol. ESPN/ABC will serve as the broadcast partner of the game, set for Sept. 10.
Facebook released a study on what happened when the Comcast SportsNet family of networks coordinated a posting strategy for on-air talent and sports journalists augmented by the CSN Facebook pages and broadcasts. The journalist-focused strategy was activated in several markets around their MLB coverage from Opening Day through MLB All-Star break in July by utilizing six sports journalists/on-air talent from six markets (San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, Philadelphia, Boston) to engage in a new Facebook posting strategy of increasing post frequency while engaging with their audience more regularly and often using Facebook Mentions. The results saw 6.5 million sports fans reached by CSN affiliates with 62% average growth of talents’ Pages over the 4-month span of the program and a 400% rise in referral traffic back to NBC Sports digital properties. ESPN Digital Media reached 91.8 million unique US visitors in October, marking the fourth largest total all-time in the sports category and a record for the month of October. Overall, fans spent 9.2 billion minutes using ESPN digital properties, drawing 1.0 billion total visits.
120 Sports unveiled its Thanksgiving programming plans, announcing a holiday programming slate that will see Sports Morning Run from 8-10a, 120 Sports Football Fix from 10-11a, Sports Fantasy Lunch Hour at 11a and regular evening programming from 4p-midnight.
NHL COO John Collins announced that he will depart the league to pursue a new business opportunity. Collins joined the NHL in November 2006. “John leaves a lasting mark,” said Commissioner Gary Bettman. “His energy, creativity and skill at building strategic partnerships helped drive significant revenue growth for our League. We are grateful for his many contributions and wish him the best in his new endeavors.”
HBO Senior VP Mark Taffet is leaving the network, effective Dec. 31. Taffet served 32 years with HBO Sports and oversaw the launch of HBO PPV, which began as TVKO in 1991.
The National Lacrosse League announced Commissioner George Daniel will be stepping down, after holding the title since January 2009. He will continue in the role until a successor is announced and will then serve the NLL as Counsel to the league. "It has been a honor and pleasure serving as NLL Commissioner. I feel that this is the right time for a change for me personally and professionally to explore other opportunities," Daniel said. "The NLL is now in a great place and positioned for tremendous growth in the near future."
