11/23/15: Google Play app store to launch in China; study finds large post-linear viewership among millennials; Machinima launches Minecraft-based series and makes new hire

Syfy: Today, November 23, the premiere of the original series The Expanse debuts on VOD, TV Everywhere, and digital platforms; the series debuts linearly December 14-15.
YouTube: All ten episodes of Machinima’s Minecraft-based web series The Bacca Chronicles debut today, November 23, on the JeromeASF channel. The series will also become available on Machinima’s social channels.



Con: Censorship is bad. Pro: China has 1.4 billion potential customers. Some more details on Google’s impending re-entry into the Middle Kingdom, which The Information first reported in September: The company will be launching its Google Play app store in China next year, according to Reuters. The Chinese Google Play store will be designed specifically for China, rather than being connected to any overseas versions, according to Reuters’ sources. In other words, Google will be fully conforming to China’s censorship requirements – which were, in part, what motivated Google to hightail it out of the country in 2010. Times change.  


Welcome to the family. Production company and MCN Collective Digital Studios has signed Family Fun Pack to its stable of YouTube channels. The FFP channel, which focuses on five young children, has garnered over 2 billion views since its launch in 2011. “We think there is tremendous demand for family friendly content,” said CDS President Dan Weinstein in a statement.
Go90 has its fingerprints on more and more content these days. The Verizon streaming service is sponsoring The Bacca Chronicles, a new Minecraft-based web series from gaming-centric digital studio Machinima. The animated series stars YouTube gamer JeromeASF, along with several other popular digital gaming stars. Though The Bacca Chronicles is sponsored by Go90, the series will actually appear on the JeromeASF YouTube channel, as well as several of Machinima’s social channels, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. All 10 episodes debut today.
Vimeo’s been snatching up a lot of content lately. Their latest acquisition: Premature, a stand-up comedy special featuring YouTuber Elliot Morgan, the former co-host of the SourceFed channel. Digital studio Supergravity Pictures announced that it would produce the special back in August. It debuts on Vimeo On Demand on December 10; preorders are already available, priced at $5.99.
Sony Music and musician Kurt Hugo Schneider are teaming up on a new web series, The Hollywod Reporter reported last week. The 10-episode series, titled To The Beat with Kurt Hugo Schneider, will combine interviews with musical performances. (Schneider, acting as host, will talk with Sony Music artists, and listen in as they perform their music.) The series will debut next year on Schneider’s Youtube channel (exact premiere date unannounced).

is using its Noggin. Launched as a linear channel in 1999, the pre-school oriented Noggin relaunched as an SVOD network this past March. Now, the service is adding eight new digital series, and will debut on Android devices and on the Apple TV by the end of the year. (Noggin is already available for desktop, iOS mobile devices, and certain connected TVs.) Noggin will also add several shows from the Nickelodeon library, including Nick Jr.’s “Go, Diego Go!,” which premiered on the service Thursday. Noggin is priced at $5.99 a month.

Endemol Shine North America and Just Entertainment Studios have inked a deal with Hologram USA, a company that brings science fiction to life. More specifically, the company’s technology can project holographic images of stars both living and dead, ranging from Jimmy Kimmel (living) to Andy Kaufman (dead, probably). Just Entertainment and Endemol will have exclusive rights to develop TV programming using Hologram USA’s technology, including a TV series documenting the “live” performances of holographic celebs. Under the partnership, content will be digitally distributed on FilmOn TV NetworksFilmOn.com.

Millennials stream lot of new programming after it airs linearly. You already knew that of course, but it’s nice to have some numbers. A new study from research firm Symphony Advanced Media found that adults aged 18-34 are watching live TV 30% of the time; an additional 30% of viewing comes outside of Nielsen’s live-plus-3 and live-plus-7 measurements, on OTT, VOD (more than three days after airing) and DVR (more than seven days). The study also found that the demo can increase more than 50% when measuring for live-plus-35. Hulu was the most common choice for time-shifted network programming, ahead of other SVOD competitors, as well as networks’ apps and websites. CBS – the only network that doesn’t offer its programming on Hulu – saw roughly twice as much duration on its streaming channels than its competitors. Gaming-oriented digital studio Machinima has a new exec. The company has hired Don Reilley as VP, Head of National Brand Partnerships. Reilley will oversee deals and staff for domestic sales operations, and will work closely with marketing clients. Most recently, Reilley served as EVP of Global Ad Sales and Operations for Major League Gaming.
