CYNOPSIS
11.23.15 Good morning. It’s Monday November 23, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing. Tonight’s Finale:
VH1: Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood at 8p
Fox will be the first of the Big Five to drop Live+SD ratings, following the lead of cable nets like AMC and FX. “It’s time for us to ‘walk the walk’ and change the conversation. The Live + Same Day rating does not reflect the way people are watching our series,” said Fox chairmen/CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman in a memo. “It leaves out the vast majority of fans who choose to watch on DVRs, and virtually ignores those who stream our shows or watch on demand.” The execs point out that over 30 days, seven Fox series at least double their same-day audience across platforms, and over half the network’s ads are sold on a C7 basis. Same-day numbers for live and special events will still be reported.
Millennials only watch live TV 30 percent of the time, according a mid-fall season study by Symphony Advanced Media that bolsters Fox’s argument for dropping Live+SD data. The report also notes Fox viewers tend towards VOD viewing while CBS has the highest live and DVR7 viewing.
Do you think Live+Same Day ratings are obsolete? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/
CBS upped its order for freshman Code Black by five episodes, to 18. The medical drama has been inching up in the ratings, reaching 1.8 among A18-49 in Live+3 Wednesday at 10p.
Tyra Banks is exiting her new syndicated daytime talker FABLife after two months. The America’s Next Top Model star says she’s leaving to devote more time to her cosmetics company, TYRA Beauty, which is “expanding faster than anticipated.” Banks is expected to make occasional appearances on the talker. FABLife had been a return to daytime for the supermodel, whose The Tyra Banks Show ran from 2005-2010.
CNN global affairs correspondent Elisa Labott, suspended for two weeks for a tweet after Thursday’s House vote to suspend the program allowing Syrian and Iraqi refugees in the country (“Statue of Liberty bows head in anguish”), apologized on Friday. “My tweet was inappropriate and disrespectful,” said Labott in a tweet that drew comments on both sides of the issue.
What goes up, must come down: The creator of animated series Gravity Falls said in a Tumblr post that his Disney XD series, a strong ratings performer, has just two more episodes to go. “This is 100% my choice, and it’s something I decided a long time ago,” wrote Alex Hirsch. “I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer…. There are so many series that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark.”
NBC has started offering free air time to qualified GOP candidates to match the 12 minutes Donald Trump logged hosting Saturday Night Live on November 7, reports CNNMoney. Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, George Pataki, Lindsey Graham and John Kasich filed petitions with NBC stations last week, under the FCC’s “equal time” rules.
From animal rescue to anti-bullying efforts to initiatives to save the planet, the media industry is pushing like never before to effect positive change. Campaigns that engage and inspire are the focus of the Cynopsis Social Good Awards, celebrating good works by brands, networks and digital. Ready to shine a light on your team? Enter here.

Its Xfinity Stream TV shouldn’t count against FCC data usage limits because Stream TV “is an in-home IP-cable service delivered over Comcast’s cable network, not over the public Internet,” says Comcast of its new offering. “IP-cable is not an ‘over-the-top’ streaming video service. Stream enables customers to enjoy their cable TV service on mobile devices in the home delivered over the managed cable network, without the need for additional equipment, like a traditional set-top-box.”
