Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 20, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premiere:
CMT: Party Down South 2 at 9p
Tonight’s Finales:
AXS TV: Tommy Chong Hosts “Gotham Comedy Live” at 10p
DIY: The Shatner Project at 10p
ID: Deadly Affairs at 10p
TLC: Breaking Amish at 10p
Amid growing sexual assault allegations, Netflix and NBC both scrapped plans for projects with Bill Cosby. First Netflix placed the premiere of stand-up comedy special Bill Cosby 77, scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving, on hold, then NBC revealed it was not proceeding with a family comedy starring the performer, announced in January, that was in development.
As the December 5 expiration of its carriage agreement loomed, Turner launched a marketing campaign alerting Dish subscribers that the satellite TV provider could soon lose TNT and TBS. Turner’s other eight networks, including CNN, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, went dark in October. “Efforts in recent weeks to restore the Turner networks to Dish customers have been rejected at every turn by Dish leadership,” said Turner. “We remain hopeful that we will reach an agreement.”
Count on it: Nielsen will start measuring viewership on Netflix and Amazon next month, reports the Wall Street Journal, gathering data about which shows are being streamed without requiring the cooperation the streaming services. The purpose: to help content owners determine the extent to which selling streaming rights to their programs impacts viewership of ad-supported TV.
NBC News president Deborah Turness came out fast and strong against a published report that Willie Geist and Natalie Morales are on the way out at Today. “The entire Today show anchor team – Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Willie Geist, Carson Daly, Tamron Hall, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb – are incredibly talented, valued and have our support,” said Turness in a statement. “In response to the false rumors that have been circulated about our anchor team, NBC wants to be absolutely clear: The rumors are wrong – period.”
Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong will be the fourth female featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents Dinner, taking place April 25. “Her political humor is sly and edgy, and it comes with a Chicago accent,” said WGCA President Christi Parsons. Strong’s father was an Associated Press bureau chief at the Illinois statehouse.
So much for that cliffhanger. Despite “Herculean” efforts by Warner Horizon to find a new home for Dallas, cancelled by TNT in October after three seasons, “at the end of the day it did not work out,” exec producers Cynthia Cidre and Michael M. Robin told fans. “We so appreciate the outpouring of support by all of you.”
Destination America has grabbed hold of a different kind of programming: Impact Wrestling. A multi-year deal brings the league to DA in January. The partnership “provides a significant addition to Destination America’s programming strategy,” said Henry Schleiff, group president of DA, ID, AHC, Discovery Fit & Health and Discovery Family. “The enduring, cross-generational enthusiasm of pro wrestling is felt by millions of fans around the country.”
Discovery Life Channel marks its rebrand from Discovery Fit & Health on January 15 with a partnership with American Media’s Shape magazine. The deal includes on-air, print, digital and social extensions at launch to drive a “Love the Shape of Your Life” campaign.

Discovery is offering supersized programming for “Mega Week,” an event running Sunday, December 7 through Sunday, December 14. A few highlights: Snake-swallows-human stunt Eaten Alive on Sunday, December 7 at 9p; a replica of Knight Rider’s KITT car on Fast n’ Loud Monday, December 8 at 9p, and “the biggest gold clean up in Gold Rush history” on Friday, December 11 at 9p.
Ah, bromance. A special Naked and Afraid installment features The Interview co-stars James Franco and Seth Rogan taking it all off for a 21-day survival stint, chronicled Sunday, December 7 at 8p. But this is Discovery’s “Mega Week,” so the guys will also be the focus of a “raunchier, uncensored” cut of Naked and Afraid: Franco and Rogan at 11:15p.
Something old, something new: Pop, rebranding from TVGN on January 14, has new series on tap, including its first original scripted project, Schitt’s Creek, bowing Wednesday, February 11 at 10p. But there will still be pop culture classics, including Beverly Hills, 90210, which launches with its two-hour pilot Monday, January 19 at 4p, settling into a weekdays-at-5p slot the next day.
ABC announced start dates for two limited-run dramas. Secrets and Lies, starring Ryan Phillipe (Crash) and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), premieres Sunday, March 1 at 9p, replacing Resurrection. American Crime, with Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) and Timothy Hutton (Leverage) on March 5 slips into the Thursday-at-10p slot now occupied by How to Get Away with Murder; the freshman hit has a two-hour season finale the week before.
PBS’s winter/spring season lineup includes new Sunday dramas Grantchester and Wolf Hall bowing January 18 at 10p and April 5 at 10p, respectively, and new Masterpiece titles Poldark and Indian Summers debuting later in 2015. Returning to Sunday berths: Season five of Downton Abbey on January 4 at 9p, season three of Mr. Selfridge on March 20 at 9p, season four of Call the Midwife, March 29 at 8p and a summer sophomore run of Vicious. Programming focused on the Vietnam War includes The Day the ’60s Died, Monday, April 29 at 9p followed by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam at 10p, and April 28’s The Draft at 8p and The Last Days in Vietnam at 9p.
Stephen Colbert is getting comfy at CBS. Less than two weeks after he ends his run on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report December 18, Colbert will host The 37th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, airing Tuesday, December 30 at 9p on CBS and celebrating singer Al Green, actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, singer-songwriter Sting, and comedian Lily Tomlin. The host replaces David Letterman on The Late Show in 2015.
Guy’s Grocery Games: Family Style pits families against each other as they compete for a $20,000 shopping spree. Four-episode stunt airs Sunday, January 4 at 8p on Food Network.
Michael Ealy (Almost Human) landed a series regular role as a murderer on season three of Fox’s The Following, returning in 2015.
Merrin Dungey (Alias) will recur on ABC’s Once Upon a Time as Little Mermaid’s evil Ursula, reports EW. Fairy tale drama airs Sundays at 8p.
Adria Arjona, already cast in TNT’s Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer pilot, landed a recurring role on season two of HBO’s True Detective, starring Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.
Freshman NBC comedies Marry Me and About a Boy got a lift Tuesday from their last originals on November 4: Marry rose from 1.3/4 to 1.5/4, and Boy saw a big .4 lift, from .9/3 to 1.3/4.
A week-to-week bump for all three of its Tuesday dramas gave CBS the win in the A18-49 demo as well as in viewers. NCIS was up 13 percent in A18-49 (to 2.6/8), NCIS: New Orleans saw a 15 percent uptick (to 2.3/7) and Person of Interest jumped 23 percent (to 1.6/5).
