IN THE NEWS

FX and creator/showrunner Kurt Sutter canceled The Bastard Executioner after one season, a decision Sutter bought ads in media trades to explain. “I have been awed by the talent and commitment of this ‘TBX’ cast and crew,” said Sutter. But “the audience has spoken and unfortunately the word is, ‘meh.’ So with due respect, we bring our mythology to an epic and fiery close.” Bastard premiered in September to 4.02 Live+7 million viewers, dropping to 1.9 million for its sixth episode. Series finale aired Tuesday. Sutter is at work on a Sons of Anarchy spinoff.

The final episode of E!’s The Soup is slated for Friday, December 18 at 10p. The show premiered in 1991 as Talk Soup with Greg Kinnear at the helm; host and exec producer Joel McHale will be signing off after 12 years overseeing the skewering of sacred cows.

Discovery Communications launched a global social activation effort focused on species conservation, tied to upcoming Discovery documentary Racing Extinction.  “Discovery Communications is a purpose-driven company. We have a legacy rooted in exploring and supporting our planet, which continues with the premiere of Racing Extinction and extends past it to the launch of this global campaign, empowering viewers to make a positive impact on the world,” said Discovery Comm. president and CEO David Zaslav. “This cause is core to Discovery’s DNA and with half of the world’s species headed toward extinction, we have a role to play in spreading the message of this groundbreaking documentary and a critical responsibility to act.” #StartWith1Thing video is here.

WWE star John Cena will host American Grit, a survival-themed reality show with members of different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces acting as team mentors. One highlight? A “punishing, endurance-based obstacle course designed to break the weakest competitors.” Series debuts on Fox in 2016.

ABC’s The Middle, The Goldbergs, black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat all received orders for two more episodes, bringing each comedy to a 24 count.

The Paley Center for Media is presenting a farewell event for FXX’s The League on Tuesday, December 8, and an evening with cast and creators from freshman CBS comedy Life in Pieces on Monday, December 14.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Family net INSP has launched a production company aimed at creating theatrical films. “Exploring new venues to provide the public with content that is consistent with the pillars of the INSP television network has always been part of our long-term strategy,” said David Cerullo, chairman and CEO. “Inspiring, heartwarming and family-centric films are embraced by millions of Americans and there continues to be a void in the theatrical motion picture market for this type of wholesome, relevant content.”

Johnny “Jackass” Knoxville is developing a one-hour comedic action series with NBC. Based on graphic novel series Hawaiian Dick, the show focuses on a cop exiled to Hawaii. Knoxville will exec produce with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Michael Rotenberg, David Janollari and Chickie the Cop Entertainment’s Eric Gitter.

HBO inked an exclusive overall deal with Nic Pizzolatto through 2018 that includes possible “incarnations” of Pizzolatto’s True Detective, but no confirmation of a third run.

How do hiring managers solve the problem of antsy Millennials who don’t expect to stay in the same job for more than a year? “The best Millennials have the most options, and won’t accept less than what they think they are worth,” says Bruce Tulgan, founder of RainmakerThinking and a leading expert on young people in the workplace. “The key is to retain them ‘one day at a time,’ as long as you are willing to keep making it work for them.” For more insights from Tulgan and our panel of experts, register for the December 10 Cynopsis webinar, How to Train and Retain the Next Generation of Employees. Details are here.

One year into its “Way More Fun” brand refresh, truTV ordered up three new series: Almost Genius, celebrating people, places and things that are almost successful; list-based 10 Things, hosted by Girl Code’s Jamie Lee, and documentary series truOriginals: Inside Iconic Comedy. The net also gave a pilot order for hybrid show Jon Glaser Loves Gear, and a pilot presentation for travelogue Inside Caucasia. “Despite significant challenges in the TV landscape, I am pleased to see truTV gaining momentum as we build our new comedic brand,” Chris Linn, president and head of programming, tells Cynopsis. Versus year ago, A18-49 ratings are up 45 percent, A18-34 up 55 percent and median age down to 33 from 37.

ABC Family, soon to be Freeform, gave a straight-to-series order for horror drama Dead of Summer, from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis, and writer Ian Goldberg. “Dead of Summer is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong – really, really wrong,” said Karey Burke, EVP programming and development.

Real estate and reality collide in Nicole & Jionni’s Shore Flip, focused on Jersey Shore standout Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and her husband as they start a house-flipping business. The project, launching on FYI in early 2016, will be “no walk on the beach,” promises the net.

Some of the greatest poker players in the world face off in Poker Central’s Super High Roller Cash Game, premiering Wednesday, December 2 at 9p and 10p. Players pony up $250,000 and more in a high-stakes competition to win millions.

GSN gave the green light to 40 episodes of original game show Winsanity, hosted by Donald Faison (Scrubs). Shooting begins in early 2016; Electus is producing.

The premiere date for Oxygen’s Rich in Faith has moved from December 2 to Wednesday, December 9 at 10p, with back-to-back episodes. Docu-series focuses on Rich Wilkerson Jr., the pastor who made headlines marrying pals Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

RETURNING SERIES

Syfy picked up Ghost Hunters for season eleven and Paranormal Witness for season five, 13 eps each. Both series had their finales last night.

The Carbonaro Effect fetched an order for 13 more episodes, and Hack My Life for ten, from truTV.

COMING UP

AIM TV syndicated series Raw Travel will introduce “Pine Ridge – Tribal Tourism” on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22. The episode focuses on the Oglala Lakota Sioux Indian reservation, one of the poorest areas in the U.S., with an annual per capita income of about $4000 and unemployment over 80 percent, that thanks to its distinctive culture is an emerging travel destination. The show “is not poverty porn,” clarifies exec producer Robert Rose. “With the heartbreaking and rampant suicide rates, Native American youth in particular need our help…The people of Pine Ridge are resilient and hospitable in the face of adversity few of us can comprehend. I hope this episode will not only raise awareness, but also motivate others to donate, volunteer or travel to the reservation.”

Animal Planet stunt “Wild Winter Nights” runs from Monday, December 14-Friday, January 1 with holiday-themed episodes of series including Monsters Inside Me (“All I Got For Christmas Is Brain Surgery”), Treehouse Masters (“Merry Fishmas”) and more. Band American Authors (“Best Day of My Life”) teams with the ASPCA to tell stories of animal rescue that will air throughout the two weeks.

Discovery’s “Mega Week,” Monday, December 7 through Sunday, December 13, offers super-sized episodes and new specials. Getting things off to a roaring start: the two-hour season finale of Street Outlaws on Monday at 9p.

Boy band One Direction returns to headline the Billboard Hollywood Party, part of ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2016. The group, formed in 2010 on UK’s The X Factor, will perform three songs on Thursday, December 31.

Pay TV net HITN, catering to Hispanic audiences in the U.S., has expanded its programming slate to include natural history productions like Animal Backgrounds and Clash of the Dinosaurs, as well as series about Latin American culture and traditions, including Mas que una Fiesta. Also premiering are emergency medical series Critical Rescue and Prosecutors.

The dogs have a day: CW has set Thursday, January 14 as the date for the World Dog Awards. George Lopez hosts.

UFC champ Holly Holm appears on a special edition of Inside MMA, focused on her stunning defeat of Ronda Rousey last Saturday. Show airs live on AXS TV Friday, November 20 at 11:30p.

ADVERTISING

Broadcast TV ad sales jumped 12 percent in October versus last year and cable had a 9 percent lift, reported Standard Media Index. “The performance of national television is very exciting given the doldrums we were in over the summer. Media owners are justifiably looking forward to a bumper holiday season,” said SMI chief commercial officer James Fennessy. “While recent C3 ratings continue to be soft, the networks seem to be doing a great job of demonstrating to brands that their C7 performance and well-engaged and targeted audiences more than make up for any shortfalls.”

Commercial time during golf tournaments could look very different if the American Medical Association has its way. The group voted in support of banning prescription drug advertising, reflecting “concerns among physicians about the negative impact of commercially-driven promotions, and the role that marketing costs play in fueling escalating drug prices,” said AMA Board Chair-elect Patrice A. Harris, M.D., M.A. “Direct-to-consumer advertising also inflates demand for new and more expensive drugs, even when these drugs may not be appropriate.” According to Kantar Media, ad dollars by drug makers has increased by 30 percent in the last two years, to $4.5 billion.

A piece of malware that has infected millions of devices is part of an impression fraud scheme that could cost advertisers nearly $3 billion by the end of 2016, according to ad fraud prevention firm Pixalate. The botnet, nicknamed Xindi after aliens in Star Trek, is estimated to have infected 6-8 million devices at over 5000 organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, universities and financial institutions.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Univision Communications has launched a direct to consumer video service, Univision Now, streaming the live broadcasts of Univision and UniMas. “Our loyal and passionate audience leads the market in live television viewing, and also over indexes on smartphone penetration and digital video consumption,” said Tonia O’Connor, president of content distribution and corporate business development. “Therefore, providing access to our broadcast networks, Univision and UniMas, on mobile devices is critical to our mission to entertain, empower and inform…our goal is to serve all U.S. Hispanics.” Users can sign up for a monthly fee of $5.99 or annual $59.99 sub.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

The BBC is slashing its television budget, the victim of UK viewers watching online and avoiding the license fee that funds programming. Drama is safe, but factual, comedy, entertainment and sports rights will see cuts. This is on top of the decision to eliminate 1000 jobs by 2017.

FremantleMedia International sold over 400 hours of programming in the Latin American region. Titles include Soundbreaking, Simply Nigella, Wentworth and Family Feud as well as new titles from the I Am collection of documentaries.

Cartoon Network is growing its Australian-made original animation with entries including Bill & Tony and The Sketchy Show out of Brisbane. Cartoon Network Australia also greenlit a pilot for Monster Beach: The Series.

Front Row Entertainment signed a first-run output deal for the Middle East and North Africa with Qatar’s beIN Media. Movies include Oliver Stone’s Snowden and Mel Gibson’s Blood Father.
