CYNOPSIS
11.19.14
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 19, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E: Duck Dynasty at 10p, Country Buck$ at 11p
Science: UFO Conspiracies at 9p
Tonight’s Finale:
FXX: The League at 10:30p
Jamie Horowitz, who joined NBC News in September as GM of the Today brand, is already out. In a memo to staff, NBC News president Deborah Turness said, “He and I have come to the conclusion that this is not the right fit.” As for a successor, “The role of General Manager remains an important one, and will be filled in due course,” said Turness.
CBS’s Mike & Molly returns for season five Monday, December 8 at 8:30p. The week before, a two-hour block of encores of the comedy airs from 8-10p, ahead of a Scorpion repeat. M&M replaces canceled The Millers.
With its carriage deal with Dish expiring Thursday, CBS issued a statement accusing the satellite TV service provider of “deliberately dragging its feet for months. Now, as the deadline nears, Dish appears willing to drop the most popular programming in its entire channel lineup because it won’t negotiate the same sort of deal that other cable, satellite and telco companies have struck with CBS.” Then the gloves really came off. “Not reaching agreements is nothing new for Dish,” continued CBS. “In fact, Dish has dropped more than 120 stations since 2013 alone, whereas CBS has only had one service disruption.” Last week Dish said, “Only CBS can force a blackout of its channels. Dish is actively working to reach a deal before the contract expires.”
TBS called for 22 more episodes of American Dad!. Since its cable debut in October, the animated comedy that ran on Fox for ten seasons is averaging 3.1 million viewers for its Monday premiere on TBS and encore on Adult Swim. “By ordering a new season while the current season is early in its run,” said Deborah K. Bradley, EVP, head of program acquisitions, content strategy and licensing for Turner, “we’re ensuring that Seth MacFarlane and his team will have the freedom to take the misadventures of CIA agent Stan Smith and his family to a whole new level.”
Fox picked up So You think You Can Dance for another run. Season 12 will premiere in summer 2015, with dancers now divided into teams of stage and street dancers.

FX ordered series Taboo, from producer Ridley Scott (Black Hawk Down), writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and actor/producer Tom Hardy (Band of Brothers), who will also star. Scott Free Films and Hardy Son & Baker start production on the revenge drama in mid- to late 2015 in the UK. The series is being produced for BBC One in the UK.
Fox gave a put pilot commitment to a remake of UK crime drama Luther. Series creator Neil Cross will write and exec produce the project, from 20th Century Fox Television, Chernin Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Prods.
Oxygen Media is well on its way to making good on its promise to increase original programming, with four projects in development targeting young, multicultural women. Character-driven shows include (all working titles) The Misty Copeland Project (Sirens Media), with ballet hopefuls mentored by the dancer; Teaching English (Relativity Television), following young Americans living abroad; Survival of the Clickiest (Trium Entertainment), about budding online stars, and reality comedy Straight Up with a Twist (All3Media).
DIY gave the green light to Breakneck Builds, a series for homeowners in a hurry. Tricon Films & Television production follows construction crews as they build prefabricated homes, then assemble them on-site in just two days. The net also announced renewals for Rehab Addict (Departure Films), Kitchen Crashers (Big Table Media), Building Alaska (Orion Multimedia), Family Under Construction Hawaii (Departure Films), Sledgehammer (JayTV Inc.), Bath Crashers (Big Table Media), Garage Gold (Paper Route Productions Inc.) and Salvage Dawgs (Trailblazer Studios).
Comedy Central International ordered I Live with Models, a sitcom set in Miami and shot in front of a studio audience at Pinewood Shepperton, outside London. “I hope we bring a little Florida sunshine to our UK audience,” said Lourdes Diaz, head of global production and development for CCI.
ITV commissioned Big Family Mansion, a format calling for multiple generations of a clan to share a mansion for a month, from Plimsoll Productions. When time’s up, the family decides whether they could stay under one roof, or must part ways.
With GSN reporting its originals premiering in 2014 achieved an average 58 percent growth among W18-49 and 41 percent among W25-54 in YTD time period averages, the net is filling the development pipeline. Projects include horror-themed game show Hellevator; fast-paced How-To Games (wt); artist competition Steampunk’d; Bingo Bash; Winsanity and Face 2 Face.
Hulu picked up Difficult People, with Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) as exec producer, from Billy on the Street head writer Julie Klausner. Klausner will star with Billy host Billy Eichner in the comedy, starting production in early 2015.
Sure, My Strange Criminal Addiction sounds sensational (lewd subway commuters, urine drinkers, toe suckers), but ID’s not taking the tabloid route. “As a brand expanding series for ID, My Strange Criminal Addiction shows just how a simple compulsion – typically, harmless at first – can cause a person’s life to travel down the rabbit hole into something far more sinister and disturbing,” said Henry Schleiff, group president. “However, as headline-grabbing as these conditions may be, it’s still very important that our viewers see that people battling these dark addictions deserve our understanding and, indeed, sympathy as they seek rehabilitation.” Series premieres Monday, December 1 at 10p.
Destination America is sponsoring a turkey giveaway in NYC today. What’s behind the good deed? “After launching shows like BBQ Pitmasters, Deep Fried Masters and United States of Bacon, we wanted to give something else to America,” Marc Etkind, GM of DA, told Cynopsis. “Our first instinct was Tums, but then we had a better idea. Destination America is partnering with The Salvation Army to offer 500 New York families a full Thanksgiving feast, from the cranberry sauce to the pumpkin pie, that they can cook up at home on this iconic American holiday.”
What the latest in rustic luxury? On Great American Country’s Ultimate Sportsman’s Lodge Colorado, it’s a canine spa, outdoor kitchen and cutting-edge home theater, for starters. Contractors and craftsmen led by outdoors expert Chris Dorsey launch the project Tuesday, November 25 at 8p. Viewers will have a chance for a dream vacation, sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, at GreatAmericanCountry.com/Adventure from November 20-December 31.
Can angels shake it off? Taylor Swift makes a return appearance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, airing on CBS Tuesday, December 9 at 10p. Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Hozier also take the stage.
LMN’s My Uncle Is the Green River Killer premieres on LMN Wednesday, December 3 at 9p. Two-hour special tells the story of serial murdered Gary Ridgway, through the eyes of his horrified family.
Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins again host E!’s Live from the Red Carpet broadcast from the American Music Awards, Sunday, November 23 at 6p. Awards start at 8p on ABC.
As Hallmark holiday movies keep racking up ratings (more on that below), Michelle Vicary head of programming Crown Media, tells Cynopsis, “For us it really is about embracing the season. I think we target our audience in a deeper way each year. And the fact that we can deliver that on the entertainment side and bring people together and entertain people with emotional connections is a win for our viewers, for our advertisers and for our affiliates. It’s just such a natural place for people to come to. The more we give them, the more they want. It’s a great time of year for us.”
TLC sets the mood for new docu-film Secret Santa, airing Sunday, December 14 at 7p, with a week of themed holiday fare. “’Tis the TLC Season” includes a viewer being surprised live on air when Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo arrives to give a reading on Sunday, December 7 at 8p, and special Deck the Halls with Dr. Christmas, premiering Friday, December 12 AT 9p.
