IFC parent AMC Networks Inc. acquired a minority ownership stake in Funny Or Die. The deal enables the two comedy brands to expand their collaboration across television, digital and social platforms. IFC president Jennifer Caserta will be joining the Funny Or Die board. IFC and Funny Or Die have a long history of successful collaborations, most recently on the forthcoming IFC series Brockmire, starring Hank Azaria, which began as a Funny Or Die short. Possible collaborations include Funny Or Die-branded programming blocks on IFC and additional original content development for television and digital platforms along with ad sales opportunities, according to the companies. Following the investment, Funny Or Die will continue to operate independently, allowing it to invest in its growth by also working with other distributors, networks and studios.
Jimmy Kimmel Live again will join forces with Bono and RED for a special ep of the ABC late-night talker, on November 22, to raise funds and awareness in the fight against AIDS. Julia Roberts, Channing Tatum, Kristen Bell, The Killers, DJ Khaled, Neil Patrick Harris and Halsey are onboard to participate in the November 22 edition of the show. World AIDS Day is December 1.

NATPE announced the recipients of the 14th annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award. They are: Susanne Daniels, global head of original content for YouTube; Randy Falco, president/CEO of Univision Communications Inc.; Eva Longoria, actress, director, producer and activist; Josh Sapan, president/CEO of AMC Networks; and Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen/CEOs of Fox Television Group. They will be honored at a reception on Wednesday, January 18, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.

Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, co-creators, exec producers and showrunners on NBC’s Grimm, teamed with the show’s which is in its sixth and final season – executive producers Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills for another drama project at NBC and Universal TV. Treasure is mystery adventure involving a group of grad students in DC who accidentally uncover a 40-year-old secret that leads them on a wild ride through real history.
A series about the late Latin music star Selena is in development from Endemol Shine North America and Major TV. The companies optioned the television rights to Chris Perez‘s book To Selena With Love, which details the music superstar through the eyes of her husband. The book will be adapted both for English- and Spanish-speaking audiences as a potential TV series, with miniseries and TV movie also possibilities.
AMC and BBC Worldwide North America are co-producing McMafia, a drama series set in the international world of organized crime starring James Norton (Happy Valley, War & Peace) as the lead character, Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian exiles with a mafia history, who’s drawn back into the crime life after spending his life trying to escape the shadow of that past. Co-produced by the networks and Cuba Pictures (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Coalition, London Road), in association with Twickenham Studios, McMafia is created and written screenwriter and film director Hossein Amini (Drive, Snow White And The Huntsman) and James Watkins (The Woman in Black, Bastille Day), who will be directing all eight episodes, and is inspired by Misha Glenny’s 2008 best-selling book of the same name. Production has begun in London.
IM Global Television optioned the Drew Magary fantasy novel The Hike to develop for TV. The series will be executive produced by David S. Goyer under his new first-look deal with IM Global TV, along with Kevin Turen. Magary is writng the TV adaptation. Published this August, The Hike blends fantasy, folklore and tropes from video games in an adventure that centers around a family man who takes a walk into the woods of rural Pennsylvania, finding himself lost with only the mysterious “The Path” to guide him.
BBC America greenlit the eight-episode dramatic thriller Killing Eve from Fleabag and Crashing creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Slated to premiere in 2018 and based the novellas by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve centers on a psychopathic assassin and the woman charged with hunting her down.
Crown Media Family Networks joined forces with American Humane as the exclusive media sponsor of two programs that recognize the significant and often restorative bonds between military veterans and canines. In development are a program where American Humane rescues shelter dogs and trains them as service animals for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and other disorders. Crown Media is also sponsoring American Humane’s ongoing initiative to reunite retired military dogs with the military human handlers with whom they served in active duty. Both sponsorships are new components of Crown Media’s long-running overall corporate pet rescue and advocacy campaign, which includes partnership programs with North Shore Animal League and Best Friends Animal Society.
Temple Street, a division of Boat Rocker Studios, signed an overall exclusive development and production deal with Killjoys and Flashpoint scribe and producer Adam Barken. As part of the arrangement, Barken will create, develop and produce new television properties for the studio. Barken is currently a co-exec producer of Temple Street’s Killjoys for Space in Canada and Syfy in the US, and recently wrote the YTV movie adaptation of Gordon Korman’s Bruno & Boots Go Jump in the Pool.
Viceland is bolstering its programming slate with Payday, which recently premiered on the network, and two others to follow in December: Big Night Out and Bong Appetit. In addition, Viceland is returning two of its most popular shows – Kings of the Road and Weediquette for new seasons. “I am just tickled pink to announce Viceland’s new series and also very happy with how our distributors across the board like DirecTV are embracing Viceland not only on traditional platforms but OTT as well,” said Vice Media founder/CEO Shane Smith. “DirecTV recently broadened distribution by launching Viceland on Select, Entertainment and Choice packages via their satellite platform and will launch Viceland on their entry level package on DirecTV Now when the OTT service launches later this year. Viceland continues to grow in audience and reach with our core cohorts being millennials. We are having a lot of fun with Viceland and see this as only the beginning of our evolution as a brand. Vive la difference!”
Payday, which airs Fridays at 9p, follows four 20-somethings over the course of a single pay-period to see how they live, spend, struggle, and thrive. Bong Appetit, debuting December 15 at 11:30p, explores the making and consumption of high-end cannabis-infused foods with different chefs and party guests each episode.
Eat, drink and be merry? Nope. Oxygen Media goes grim for the season with the new four-hour event series Homicide for the Holidays, premiering Saturday, December 3 at 8p. The special delves into the terrifying twists, turns and tell-alls that reveal how tumultuous the holiday season can be.
E! kicks off 2017 with a vengeance when the net premieres Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian on Thursday, January 12th at 8p. In each of the eight, one-hour episodes, participants will get the opportunity to reinvent themselves from the inside out with the help of Khloe and top fitness and nutrition experts. A 30-minute preview special will air Wednesday, November 23 at 9p.
FX has set Tuesday, January 10 at 10p as the premiere date for its new drama series Taboo, starring Tom Hardy and created by Steven Knight with Hardy and his father Chips Hardy. Set in 1814, Taboo follows a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself.
Sci-fi drama Colony will return for its second season on Thursday, January 12 at 10p on USA Network. Season 2 picks up with alien intelligence still in control of a near-future LA.
AMC released a trailer for season 2 of its sci-fi drama Humans and set the premiere for February. The series – which also airs on Channel 4 in the UK – is set in a parallel present and focuses on what happens when the lines between humans and machines are blurred.
History will mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor with a weekend of programming commemorating the infamous day, December 7, 1941, that propelled the US to declare war on Japan and launched the country into WWII. Among original specials airing over the weekend of December 3-4 is documentary Pearl Harbor: The Truth, which premieres Sunday, December 4 at 10p, and Pearl Harbor: 75 Years Later, premiering Saturday, December 3 at 9p. History will also air a new original short form series, Pearl Harbor: The Last Word, in primetime throughout the weekend.
Songstress Chaka Khan will perform at VH1 Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night, airing Monday, December 5 after a five-year hiatus. She joins the previously announced Mariah Carey, Patti LaBelle and Teyana Taylor.
CBS will air Religion, Art & Cultural Heritage on Sunday, December 4 (check local listings). The interfaith special looks at the importance of art and cultural in understanding faith, identity and history.

HBO will premiere Vice Special Report: A House Divided at 10p Friday, December 9. The documentary probing the political climate that gave rise to president-elect Donald Trump features an interview with President Obama speaking to Vice founder Shane Smith about the partisan fighting that dominated his presidency and divided the country. Others interviewed include Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, former House Speaker John Boehner, members of the president’s inner circle and key opponents.
Nominations were announced yesterday for the People’s Choice Awards 2017, set to air on Wednesday, January 18 at 9p on CBS. Nominees include Ellen DeGeneres and Kevin Hart. Mark Burnett returns as executive producer.
TV veteran Jon Kelley will host Funny You Should Ask, the new syndicated game show from Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios. The show is slated to launch this fall and will feature a panel of professional stand-up comics who interact with contestants for cash and prizes.
AMC and BBC Worldwide are casting up their co-production series McMafia. James Norton (Happy Valley, War & Peace) stars as lead character, Alex Godman, an English-raised son of Russian exiles with mafia history. Additionally, David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum, Good Night, and Good Luck), Juliet Rylance (The Knick, American Gothic), Aleksey Serebryakov (The Method, Leviathan), Maria Shukshina and Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones) round out the cast.
Felicia “Snoop” Pearson (The Wire) has joined the cast of VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop New York, whose seventh season begins November 21 at 8p. An avid member of the LGBT community, Pearson will balance moving back to NY, the actor grind, a sex-toy line and an extremely jealous girlfriend.
Fandango’s premium on-demand video service FandangoNOW is launching for the first time on Xbox One and Xbox One S, bringing the service’s installed base to more than 100 million devices.
Viacom International Media Networks acquired Television Federal S.A., or Telefe, a major free-to-air channel in Argentina, for $345 million in cash. The announcement yesterday came on Bob Bakish’s first day as Viacom’s acting CEO; Bakish played a big role in the deal when he previously served as head of VIMN. Telefe reaches 95 percent of all households in Argentina and has an estimated viewership share in 2016 of 33 percent.
Indie distributor all3media International signed a new format commission for Kitchen Nightmares with Brazil broadcaster Bandeirantes. Produced by Eyeworks, the Brazilian version, known locally as Pesadelo na Cozinha, will make its debut in the territory early next year.

Lesley Stahl’s interview of President-elect Donald Trump and his family in their first post-election television interview drew a season-high 20 million viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, November 13. CBS’ Minutes delivered more viewers this week than any other non-sports program, and the ratings were highest for the program in viewers and key demos since January 17.
The election’s surprising result lifted just about every other news outlet as well. Among them: On its post-election telecast on Wednesday, November 9, ABC News’ Good Morning America delivered its top telecast in Total Viewers (6.554 million), A25-54 (2.224 million) and A18-49 (1.768 million) in more than a year and a half. CBS This Morning posted double-digit percentage gains in viewers and all key demos, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ended November 11, achieving its best viewer delivery since the week following the Super Bowl.
Saturday Night Live‘s November 12 edition scored season highs in both A18-49 and Total viewers and the show’s highest A18-49 rating since 2013, with host Jimmy Fallon and musical guest Justin Timberlake, according to Live + Same Day ratings from Nielsen. This weekend’s show featured host Dave Chappelle and musical guest A Tribe Called Quest, and averaged a 3.15/15 share in A18-49 and 8.691 Total viewers.
And in syndication, Extra, seeing a 77 percent surge from the prior week with its Donald Trump exclusive, scored its highest rating in eight months and beat Access Hollywood for first time since November 2014. Judge Judy topped court shows for a milestone 1,050th straight week or 20-plus years, and Hot Bench for the first time became the third-highest rated daytime strip and hit new season best ratings after Judge Judy and husband Judge Jerry Sheindlin dropped in.
Hallmark Channel’s stalwart “Countdown to Christmas” campaign continues to score impressive ratings with its most recent original holiday movie premieres, Every Christmas Has a Story (Saturday, November 12) and Christmas Cookies (Sunday, November 13) catapulting the network to No. 1 this past weekend in Total Day among Household and W25-54 ratings for the second consecutive weekend. During the 16 days since the launch of “Countdown to Christmas,” Hallmark Channel is the most-watched cable network among W25-54.
Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ annual holiday programming event the “Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas” also rang in ratings success with the new, original movie premiere Finding Father Christmas (Sunday, November 13) becoming the most-watched and highest-rated telecast in network history among Households, W18-49, W25-54, A18-49, A25-54 and Total Viewers.
Food Network ranked sixth among cable Sunday night, up 19 percent year-over-year. Holiday Baking Championship led the way at 9p, posting a .9 rating among A25-54 (780K IMP) and ranking seventh in the timeslot, up 33 percent vs. last week and up 13 percent over last year. The series premiere of Clash of the Grandmas at 10p delivered a solid .6 rating among A25-54 and ranked eighth in the timeslot, up 8 percent year-over-year.
Based on National Live + Same Day program ratings, during the week of November 7, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live shot up over the prior week by double digits in Total Viewers (12 percent) and A18-49 (15 percent) to score season highs. ABC’s Kimmel topped CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert among A18-49 for the third week in a row.
