True mystery-focused Justice Network, slated for a January launch, aims to capitalize on viewers’ fascination with crime. Said CEO Steve Schiffman, former president of National Geographic Channels, “Recognizing that by 2013, half of the top 50-rated prime shows on television were justice-oriented programming, our management team saw the need to satisfy America’s obsession with justice.” Also on that team: Barry Wallach, former president of NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution and John Ford, former president of Discovery Channel. A deal with Gannett Broadcasting will cover one third of the U.S. at launch.
President Obama isn’t wavering on the issue of net neutrality. In a statement explaining why he is urging the FCC to implement “the strongest possible rules” to protect an open Internet, the President said “it is essential to the American economy, and increasingly our very way of life…We cannot allow Internet service providers to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas.”
TruthCo. gave props to CW freshman Jane the Virgin with its November “Show to Know” kudos. Based on a Venezuelan telenovela, Jane treats Latinos “not as monolithic, struggling ‘others,’ but as relatable, well-rounded, and diverse,” said the culture decoder, adding the series “succeeds by balancing the genre’s requisite absurdity with the emotionally realistic reactions of its characters.”
NYCers won’t be seeing an irreverent ad for Bravo’s upcoming series Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, with star Lisa Edelstein holding up her ring finger and the line, “Go Find Yourself,” on city buses or subways. The MTA banned the poster because of its “implied inappropriate creative,” according to the NY Post. That didn’t stop Bravo – ads have already popped up in other spots, like Big Apple phone kiosks. (LA also rejected the ad.) Girlfriends’ Guide premieres Tuesday, December 2 at 10p.
