Jada Pinkett Smith is headed back to the small screen. The A Different World alum will star in and executive produce Murder Town, holder of a pilot commitment from ABC. Drama about Wilmington, Delaware’s first African American DA is being produced by A+E Studios.
Country star Blake Shelton (The Voice) is set to host Nickelodeon’s 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards, airing live Saturday, March 12, 2016. “I’ve been on countless stages throughout my life, but none have promised the madness, excitement and endless slime as Nick’s Kids’ Choice Awards,” said Shelton. “Bring it on Nickelodeon!”
NBC ordered three more episodes of The Mysteries Of Laura, bringing the sophomore crime dramedy’s total to 16. Last Wednesday, the show posted a 20 percent A18-49 ratings spike (1.2) and 11 percent total viewer increase (7 million) in Live+SD.
Music Choice is featuring exclusive content promoting the 2015 American Music Awards across On Demand, Music Choice Play, Music Channels and its digital properties now through the ceremony’s live broadcast on Sunday, November 22 at 8p on ABC. Music videos from this year’s host Jennifer Lopez will be featured, as well as nominees including Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, and performers like Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood and One Direction. Starting November 16, fans can watch music videos by AMA nominees all week long.
The first “Scripted” conference for global scripted content kicked off yesterday in NYC with a keynote from Charlie Collier, president and GM of AMC and Sundance TV, that delved into the cultural shifts that are shaping programming. One element: technology. “The stress of relentless technological intrusions are making consumers crave content that is so immersive,” said Collier, “that the content provides a distraction from the constant barrage of technology in our lives.” Clips from The Waltons (warm family moment) and Breaking Bad (violent family stabbing scene) helped make the point.
Good distribution news for Poker Central: The new Apple TV is offering the network’s linear feed and VOD.
Telletopia Foundation, a nonprofit online video service provider, has introduced an OTT business model that moves the local broadcast TV bundle to the Internet. Founded by former cable and telecommunications executives, the company is developing an Internet television service that will let consumers watch local channels live, including news, sports and primetime programming carried by local TV stations. “TV viewers are migrating to the Internet, but a simple, accretive way for broadcasters to move their business online hasn’t existed, until now,” said Gary Koerper, co-founder and CEO of Telletopia. “We give consumers the freedom to watch live, local TV anywhere on any device while giving broadcasters the ability to reach them.” The company is using its status as a nonprofit to legally transmit live broadcast feeds over the Internet without a license.

Insurrection Media, Inc. has entered a production partnership with Robert Kirkman and David Alpert’s Skybound Entertainment. Insurrection will provide the resources and support for Skybound to identify, develop and produce genre series to be distributed in the U.S. and overseas on multitude platforms; Skybound will set up and oversee production services for Insurrection and collaborate on the expansion of the property from the original series.
Snoop Dogg‘s YouTube show GGN (Double G News Network) is headed to Revolt TV. The rapper/actor signed a licensing deal with the music-focused cable net; series debuts Wednesday, November 11 and airs for eight consecutive weeks at 10:30p.
The CW has teamed with Olivia Munn to develop a 1970s female sportscaster series. The drama centers on a young journalist who gets hired by a New York news programming chief as a publicity stunt to be one of the first female on-air sports reporters.
Husband and wife team Naomi and Adam Scott‘s Gettin’ Rad has sold two comedies. Deep S.I.X., which landed at HBO, follows a rag-tag Homeland security team that no one believes in as they investigate paranormal threats. Donuthead, sold to NBC, is a single-camera comedy about an anxiety-ridden 11-year old boy and his single mother.
CBS ordered comedy The Out-Law from Christopher Moynihan, who’s under an overall deal with the net, and Universal TV. The series centers on a perpetually positive, Berkeley-born, liberal white-collar doctor, who marries into a loud, cynical, blue-collar Long Island family.
Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project) sold Wing Person to ABC. The half-hour comedy centers on the co-dependent relationship between a lesbian lothario and her cautious and straight male best friend.
ABC is teaming with Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael on a female ex-con comedy. The series features Crystal, a hustler from the wrong side of the trailer park who gets out of prison and lands a job in the suburbs as an in-home health aide.
Running Wild with Bear Grylls with special guest star President Barack Obama airs Thursday, December 17 at 10p on NBC. The survivalist takes the commander-in-chief on a trek across the Alaskan wilderness, as the president reveals off-the-script stories about his relationship with his wife and children and how he balances time between work and home.
Get ready to be Pitch Slapped with Lifetime‘s new docuseries, premiering Tuesday, January 5 at 10p. Eight, hour-long episodes reveal what it’s really like in the competitive world of high school a cappella. Deke Sharon (Pitch Perfect) and Diana Preisler (Blue Jupiter) guide the voices in two cross-town rival teams from New Jersey, as they face off in weekly competitions.
The tattoo mysteries will continue – Blindspot snagged an early second season order from NBC. The freshman drama was the top new series of the fall, both on Monday nights and with delayed viewing.
ABC‘s American Crime makes its second season debut on Wednesday, January at 10p. This time around, the show tackles issues of sexual orientation and socioeconomic disparity, when lurid photos of a high school boy are posted on social media following a party.
Josh Close (Fargo) grabbed a recurring role on Season 5 of Person of Interest. The CBS drama is slated to premiere in midseason.
It’s double duty on CBS for Tyler Ritter. The actor has landed a guest spot on NCIS and will also appear on an episode of NCIS: New Orleans.
E! announced a new slate of original digital series, including the net’s first digital scripted comedy, Hashtaggers. Also on the way: The Royal Hangover, a social post-show livestream that will follow each new episode of The Royals during its second season two. The debut episode on Sunday, November 15 features interviews with Creator/Executive Producer Mark Schwahn and series stars Elizabeth Hurley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen and William Mosely. Other new series include TV Scoop (wt) and Ranked, along with fashion series Fashion Bloggers and Three to Be.
Telemundo has marked the one-year countdown to Election Day, November 8, 2016, by launching the Noticias Telemundo news app, a Spanish-language mobile app news content customization for iPhone and Android as well as the first news app for U.S. Hispanics to be available for Apple Watch. “It is clear that Hispanics are playing a crucial role this election cycle and Telemundo is committed to empower them with information that is reliable and balanced, distributed across the platforms they use,” said Luis Carlos Velez, EVP of Network News.
Armoza Formats has licensed The Gran Plan to French Canadian, Bell Media-owned channel Canal Vie. Originally created by Artza Productions, the local adaptation will consist of 13 episodes produced by Zone3 and a cast of well-known personalities for the 3 grannies to premiere in March 2016.
Canada’s Kids’ CBC greenlit Dot from the Industrial Brothers in association with The Jim Henson Company. Animated series is based on the children’s book by Randi Zuckerberg.

CBS‘ NCIS passed NBC‘s Sunday Night Football as the #1 broadcast in primetime for the week ending October 25, according to Nielsen Live+7 ratings. With a 7-day lift of 3.76 million, NCIS (20.97 million) topped the big game (20.68 million).
Investigation Discovery’s premiere of Barbara Walters Presents American Scandals was the top series debut in the fourth quarter to date for the network, averaging more than 1.2 million P2+ in Live+3. The first episode, JonBenet Ramsey: Inside the Mystery on Monday, November 2 at 10p, was ID’s top series debut, top season premiere and prime telecast for a new series this quarter among P2+ and target audience W25-54. In total, the debut episode reached over 2.4M unique viewers P2+.
The season four premiere of Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules delivered over 1.3 million P18-49 (up 4 percent versus last year), 1.5 million P25-54 (up 25 percent) and 2 million total viewers (up 15 percent), according to Live+3 data.
