Good morning. It’s Tuesday November 8, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The PGA TOUR has its new Commissioner with the organization’s Policy Board announcing the appointment of Jay Monahan to the position where he will take over on Jan. 1 with the retirement of Tim Finchem, who steps down after serving more than 22 years as the TOUR’s third Commissioner. Monahan has served as Deputy Commissioner since 2014 and added the additional title of COO to his resume earlier this year.

“Jay has proven himself to be an outstanding leader who has developed an intimate knowledge and understanding of the PGA TOUR and a clear vision for the future of the organization,” said Victor F. Ganzi, Chairman of the Policy Board. “He is highly respected among our members, staff, business partners and the golf industry as a whole. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Jay’s caliber fully prepared to assume the role of Commissioner and lead the PGA TOUR’s exceptional executive team as it continues to build upon the remarkable success achieved under Tim’s leadership.”

ON THE AIR

A nice Broncos/Raiders showdown on NBC’s Sunday Night Football failed to break out of the cycle of recent ratings dips for the league as the game posted 11.7/19 overnight Nielsen rating, but still pushed NBC toward a primetime win. Top markets for the game on SNF: Denver 45.2/66; Sacramento 24.2/37; Albuquerque 22.8/33; Oak-SF 18.4/32; Vegas 18.1/28
 
Meanwhile, ESPN reported upticks for its Friday primetime NBA doubleheader with last week seeing a 42% rise over last season’s comparable windows, according to Nielsen. The pair averaged a 1.7 overnight rating, up from a 1.2 last year. In addition, ESPN saw its streaming audience up 134%with 10,460,000 total average minutes streamed and an average audience of 68,000 viewers.
 
CBS Sports named its SEC on CBS football game for Nov. 19, selecting the Missouri/Tennessee matchup at 3:30p. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the contest from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

The MLS Playoffs locked in broadcast plans for the Eastern and Western Conference finals. In the Eastern Conference match, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact face off starting Nov. 22 at 8p, with the first leg on ESPN and the second on FOX. The Seattle Sounders and Colorado Rapids face off on Nov. 22 at 10p on FOX, followed by ESPN.

ESPNU offers a one-hour Recruiting Nation: Basketball Signing Day Special on Thursday at 6p where three top 20 college basketball recruits in the ESPN 100 will announce their college decisions during the show. Host Matt Schick will be joined by national recruiting director Paul Biancardi and analyst Adam Finkelstein for the special.

The NHRA on FOX delivers its final event of the season this weekend with the Auto Club Finals from Pomona. Through 23 events this season, average viewership of the NHRA on FS1/FOX is up 25% year-to-year over its ESPN/ESPN2’s 2015 numbers, hitting 650,000. Meanwhile, adults 18-49 posted a 50% increase while Adults 25-54 were up 46%.

Fanatics locked in a deal with AMB Sports and Entertainment for a long-term partnership to become the company’s official multichannel retail partner. This deal includes retail operations for events at Mercedes-Benz Stadium that will serve as the home of the Atlanta Falcons and MLS team, Atlanta United FC. Fanatics will also operate e-commerce for the Falcons and Atlanta United, “creating a seamless multichannel retail experience for fans of both team.”

Computer brand Acer inked a new deal to return as sponsor of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer tournament. In addition to branding along the course and media assets, Acer will again partner with the LPGA on a season-long #AcedIt social sweepstakes that will see one fan get a chance to win an Aspire Switch laptop for every hole-in-one during each tournament.

Team Penske and Discount Tire will continue their partnership into the 2017 season. Discount Tire will return as the primary sponsor of the No. 22 Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Xfinity Series next season as well as continue as an associate sponsor on both the No. 2 and No. 22 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Ford Fusions, In addition, the company will join Team Penske’s Verizon IndyCar Series program as an associate sponsor.

Veteran sports and entertainment industry executives Happy Walters, Founder and former CEO of Relativity Sports, and Josh Swartz, former President of Relativity Sports, announced the launch of Catalyst Sports & Media designed to act as a “strategic advisor, investor and talent representative with a focus on global growth properties, including basketball, global football and eSports.” Bryce Blum will lead its eSports division as Executive Vice President.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Sports Illustrated, LIFE VR and multimedia company Cyberlink launched a VR experience that puts viewers in the shoes of a 10-time NYC Marathon runner at the 2016 race. The 3-minute immersive content, “26.2 in 360,” was shot entirely at the race this past weekend and is now available on Time Inc.’s LIFE VR app for iOS and Android, with 360-degree video on SI.com and across SI’s social channels.  The video was captured by runner Alex Christison using a special stabilization rig and a Samsung Gear 360 camera as he ran through the five boroughs.

SendtoNews Video reports that its News Partnership Network scored 22 million World Series digital views between Oct. 24 and Nov. 3. Meanwhile, September saw the company boost its total videos viewed by almost 25%.

ESPORTS

ESL and WESA unveiled details of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Pro League for 2017. The event will showcase more teams and regions next year, with a prize pool of $2 million  to mark a 25% rise over last year’s US$1.5 million. Season 5 begins Feb. 7 and will run through the offline finals to take place at the Verizon Theatre in Dallas, Texas on June 3-4. This will mark the first stand-alone ESL Pro League Finals held in the US. Season 6 will then be held from August-November with the Finals in December.

Helsinki based ice hockey club IFK Helsinki announced its plans to get into eSports, launching a team to compete in Overwatch. The team will compete under the name Helsinki REDS and uses the tag #hREDS on social media.
