IN THE NEWS

A sick day already? Daily Show host Trevor Noah, who took over for Jon Stewart on September 28, underwent an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning. “We’re happy to report the procedure went well,” said Comedy Central. An encore episode of the late nighter aired last night.

CBS News announced the details for its Democratic presidential debate, to be held Saturday, November 14 at 9p in Des Moines. Joining Face the Nation’s John Dickerson as panelists: CBS News Congressional Correspondent Nancy Cordes, KCCI anchor Kevin Cooney and the Des Moines Register political columnist Kathie Obradovich.Live coverage of candidates Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley making their cases will also be available to users across all leading digital platforms.

Streaming services might have to wait longer for content from Time Warner properties. During a 3Q15 earnings call, CEO Jeff Bewkes said that in the interest of maximizing the monetization of its shows, the company, home of Turner Broadcasting, is evaluating whether to delay the SVOD licensing window for certain programming. “We continue to look carefully at the health of our networks and all of Warner Bros. network partners,” said Bewkes.

Donald Trump’s upcoming hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live started off as a sketch, according to the GOP presidential candidate. Trump told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday that when SNL’s Lorne Michaels heard about the bit, “He said, ‘Well, wait a minute. Donald’s agreed to do this skit. Would he do the whole thing?’” Trump, who called the gig “an honor,” hits Studio 8H November 7.

TV execs and viewers may decry a proliferation of TV content that makes it difficult to cut through clutter, but NATPE members don’t think the flow of scripted is slowing down anytime soon. According to a new survey, 54 percent of members said they believe the number of shows will increase over the next two years, with 75 percent predicting SVOD services will play the biggest role in bringing new scripted shows to market. As for what drives tune-in in a crowded field, 58 percent of those polled believe marketing and promotion, versus cast, creators or platform, is the key.

The Television Academy is joining Got Your 6 Storytellers events to put a spotlight on veterans issues. The third annual East Coast event takes place today at the HBO Theatre in NYC, while Paramount Pictures Studios’ Sherry Lansing Theatre houses an LA program Tuesday, November 10. “The Got Your 6 Storytellers events align with the Television Academy’s mission to foster diverse voices and narratives on television,” said Television Academy president and COO Maury McIntyre. “These events represent a dynamic platform on which to connect veterans with the creative community, with the goal of inspiring television that explores the stories of the men and women of the military in thought-provoking and meaningful ways.”

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Viewers of Fox Networks Group shows on Hulu now have the option of choosing one 30-second ad instead of sitting through two-and-a-half minutes of traditional spots. “Digital video is an on-demand, non-linear medium, and having an ad format that fits this experience is a win for advertisers, publishers, and viewers alike,” said Joe Marchese, president, advanced advertising products at Fox Networks Group. Ads are powered by 21st Century Fox subsidiary true[X], headed by Marchese. Early taker: global snacking brand Mondelez International.

All-Star Gingerbread Build, a one-hour competition pitting HGTV and Food Network stars against each other to create life-sized gingerbread houses, is sponsored by Sears, Kerrygold Butter and Pillsbury. Simulcast on both nets Saturday, November 28 at 8p, the special features Food’s Ron Ben-Israel (Cake Wars) and HGTV Property Brother Jonathan Scott going head-to-head against Food’s Duff Goldman (Holiday Baking Championship) and other Property Brother Drew Scott.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Discovery Networks OTT platforms have drawn 200,000 subscribers, a number David Zaslav expects to grow quickly. “We do have target in place which we’re calling March a million,” said the CEO during the company’s 3Q15 earnings call. “If we can get to a million at $6 to $8 a month, we could generate close to $100 million in revenue, which I think gets our whole company’s attention.”

False Flag premiered on Keshet Broadcasting October 29 as the highest-ever rated launch of a scripted show and most-watched program in Israel of the week. Back-to-back eps drew shares of 44 and 45 percent.
