CYNOPSISDIGITAL
11.03.16 Good morning. It’s Thursday November 3, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Publisher: In digital media, a publisher is any organization or entity that delivers content or a service to users. (For example, any website that hosts original or curated media content qualifies as a publisher.) Publishers often depend on digital ad revenue.
One truism that’s emerged from the last few earnings quarters: It’s good to be Facebook. The social media giant beat expectations in Q3, bringing in a whopping $7 billion in revenue. That’s a $2.5 billion year-over-year increase. Net income was $2.34 billion, compared to $896 million one year ago. Adjusted earnings were $1.09 per share; Wall Street had expected $0.96 per share and $6.9 billion in revenue. According to Facebook’s report, the company boasted an average of 1.18 billion daily active users in September, up from 1.01 billion a year ago. And daily mobile active users rose from 894 million to 1.09 billion.
Another notable bit of info to emerge from the Facebook earnings call: According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 40 million users are now connected to the internet through Internet.org, Facebook’s Internet accessibility initiative. That’s .05% of the world’s population. Internet.org is designed to bring Internet access to parts of the planet with limited or nonexistent connectivity, particularly in the Third World. The initiative suffered a major setback earlier this year, when a SpaceX rocket exploded on the launch pad, taking Internet.org’s first-ever satellite with it.
You wouldn’t think that shelling out $31 million to settle a lawsuit would come as a relief, but here we are. That $31 million settlement went to wrestler Hulk Hogan, courtesy of Gawker Media and founder Nick Denton. The payment concludes the lawsuit that bankrupted Gawker and forced a sale to Univision Communications. Back in March, a jury ordered Gawker to pay Hogan $140 million. “The saga is over,” Denton wrote in a blog post.

ADVERTISING
Looks like Twitch is taking greater strides toward monetization. The Amazon-owned live-streaming platform announced that, starting this week, it will start selling video ads that will run in the live-streams of its broadcast partners. The ads will be delivered by SureStream, a new native ad-delivery system. One notable feature of the new ads: According to Twitch, they’ll be served even to viewers using ad-blockers. Twitch will implement a rev-share agreement with its partners, though for now it’s not saying what the split will be.
IAC has announced a new plan for Vimeo, IAC’s video-sharing platform. Joey Levin, who serves as both IAC’s CEO and Vimeo’s Interim CEO, wrote in a letter to IAC shareholders that Vimeo will begin to “experiment” with new consumer subscription services. “We will supplement our creators with original and licensed programming, and can fill out a robust slate of programming for tens of millions, not billions, of dollars,” he wrote. In other words, the goal is to compete with Netflix – without spending nearly as much money. At the moment, not much else is known about the new services, including when they might be rolled out, what kind of content they’ll feature, or how much they’ll cost.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
The GroupM digital advertising agency MEC has named Tim Castree as its new Global CEO. He replaces Charles Courtier, who has held the position for the past fourteen years. Castreee will report to GroupM Global CEO Kelly Clark. Castree most recently worked at the video advertising software provider Videology, serving as Managing Director in North America.
@Mcarpen3: That 76ers fan was HILARIOUS. He should definitely be thrown out, but it was so funny.
