IN THE NEWS

The startling reports of AMC Networks CEO Christina Spade exiting her post after only three months was just the beginning of the news coming from AMC, which is expected to lay off about 20 percent of its workforce. Shortly after she stepped down company chairman James Dolan sent a memo to staff yesterday forecasting “large-scale layoffs” across every operating area. “It was our belief that cord cutting losses would be offset by gains in streaming,” Dolan wrote. “This has not been the case.” As for Spade, The Wall Street Journal reports she’s set to receive a severance payment of more than $10 million, in addition to benefits associated with restricted stock units and other awards, according to the terms outlined in the employment agreement.

Showtime Entertainment president Jana Winograde added her thoughts to the growing conversation about how the global cost of living crisis will affect the industry. Telling attendees at Content London that “belt-tightening” will continue, Winograde said, “Diversify, diversify, diversify is the basic tenet of economics. The more income streams you have the better off you are. I think others who really went all in on streaming are seeing the glory of various revenue streams. It makes perfect sense.”

“Wednesday” is Netflix’s new favorite day. The “Addams Family”-inspired supernatural series hit a new record for the streamer, drawing 341.23 million hours viewed during its first week and landing the most hours viewed in a week for any English-language TV series on Netflix.

Steve Martin and Martin Short will co-host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on December 10, with musical guest Brandi Carlile, as the show closes out 2022 with three new episodes. Also on deck are Keke Palmer on December 3, with musician SZA, and Austin Butler on December 17, with musical guest Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Emmy nominee Jack McBrayer and music and social media influencer JoJo Siwa will host the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, with McBrayer hosting the ceremony on Sunday, December 11 and Siwa hosting the creative arts ceremony on Saturday, December 10. Both ceremonies will take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in LA.

Rainmaker Content took a minority equity stake in Saffron Cherry Productions, building on the two companies’ existing first-look deal. During the last year Rainmaker and Saffron Cherry have collaborated on a slate of series, and they’re in development on shows including police drama “Blurred by Ian Winterton” and “The Dales Detective Agency,” based on Julia Chapman’s book series.

UKTV network Drama commissioned its first original scripted series. “Outrageous,” a six-part show from BBC Studios-owned Firebird Pictures, will examine look at the famous British socialite sisters the Mitfords, whose antics in the ‘30s made their family one of the most well known in the UK.

“Miss Scarlet And The Duke” got a fourth season renewal by Masterpiece. The mystery series stars Kate Phillips (“The Crown”) as the first-ever female detective in Victorian London.

“Jane the Virgin” is getting a South African remake that envisions the protagonist as a proud young Zulu woman. Propagate International licensed the rights to Alta Global Media to develop the new version of the series.

UK’s Channel 5 commissioned “Crash Investigators” (working title), a docuseries that will follow the delicate work of the crash investigations teams in North Yorkshire, one of the most dangerous driving counties in the UK.
