Twitter has updated its crowd-sourced fact-checking program, Birdwatch, to allow users to contribute anonymously. “Research has shown that aliases have the potential to reduce bias, by putting focus on the content of a note, not the author,” said Twitter.

Reddit is shuttering short-form video sharing app Dubsmash on February 22, and integrating its video features into its own app. Reddit acquired Dubsmash a year ago with expectations at the time to keep it as a separate platform.

Game developer Niantic (“Pokemon GO”) has received a $300 million investment from Coature. “Niantic is building a platform for AR based on a 3D map of the world that we believe will play a critical role in the next transition in computing,” said Niantic CEO and founder John Hanke.

IBC has canceled its in-person event in Amsterdam, slated for December 3-6, over rising concerns about Covid in The Netherlands. IBC2021 will instead offer the content and technology showcase digitally.

A new advertising campaign for VIZIO Sound Bars is going to the dogs. Creative campaign “Hear Like They Do” offers a glimpse into the lives of three dogs captivated by the sound quality of VIZIO’s Sound Bars as they sit and stay in for a night of television. “We wanted to demonstrate VIZIO’s premium TV sound bars in a way that’s as simple, insightful and entertaining as the content viewers are watching,” said Ben Purcell, Chief Creative Officer, of David&Goliath. “We decided to turn to the experts in sound. And since dogs hear four times better than people, we focused our creative campaign on experiencing sound as they do.”

Netflix is acquiring special effects company Scanline VFX (“Cowboy Bebop”). The streamer will invest in Scanline’s pipeline, infrastructure and workforce “and continue to support the pioneering work that Scanline’s Eyeline Studios is doing in virtual production to push the boundaries of what is visibly possible,” wrote Netflix’s VP of Studio Operations Amy Reinhard in a company blog post.

Audience insights company Diesel Labs is formally launching the Audience Anticipation Index, a weekly ranking fueled by TikTok and other social media data, of upcoming titles across the media landscape that are likely to garner the largest socially engaged audiences. “We are continuously evaluating the importance of emerging data sources,” said Anjali Midha, CEO and Co-Founder of Diesel Labs. “With 1 billion active global users, it’s clear that TikTok ranks among the most important environments that audiences are using to express their interest in and reactions to media content.”

Tastemade is launching two products to enable Makers to earn new streams of revenue. Tastemade Makers allows Makers to create a subscription package where they can use the platform to sell various benefits to their fans including exclusive content, secret recipes, recommendations, direct messaging access, and more. Tastemade Experiences is an event-based marketplace where Makers can directly offer ticketed in-person and virtual experiences, and provides Makers with the tools to build, promote, sell, and conduct their events.

FOX Weather is partnering with FlightAware, a digital aviation company that operates a flight tracking and data platform, to provide air travel information to viewers. The partnership will combine FlightAware’s commercial flight tracking with FOX Weather’s radar forecasting.

Despite congressional testimony to the contrary, Facebook continues to use machine learning to target ads to young people, says a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg from Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Reps. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.) and Kathy Castor (D-Fla.). “Facebook explicitly stated it was committed to taking a ‘more precautionary approach’ in its advertising practices when it announced its policy change,” wrote the lawmakers. “Unfortunately, new research suggests that harmful advertising practices on Facebook continue.” In fact, Facebook does not use data from its advertisers’ and partners’ websites and apps to personalize ads to people under 18, responded Facebook spokesman Joe Osborne. Rather, “The reason this information shows up in our transparency tools is because teens visit sites or apps that use our business tools. We want to provide transparency into the data we receive, even if it’s not used for ads personalization.”

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment announced the results of the 2021 NYC Digital Games Industry Economic Impact Study. Findings of the report conclude that in 2020 the industry supported 7,600 jobs, $762 million in wages, and $2 billion in economic output.

Walmart was the first retailer to test Twitter’s first shoppable livestream, on Sunday, with a Cyber Deals live event hosted by Jason Derulo. “Walmart is renowned for bringing customers an immersive look into their products and we are excited to bring this experience onto Twitter with them, while helping them reach their business objectives,” said Sarah Personette, Chief Customer officer at Twitter. “This is just the first of many Live Shopping events we hope brands will be able to bring to market.”

Mobile advertising and app monetization company Tapjoy announced the launch of Tapjoy Shopping, an in-app marketplace that enables consumers to shop from among hundreds of brand retailers and earn rewards in their apps for every purchase. “This engaging experience combines the power of Tapjoy’s value exchange model with the ease of ecommerce, creating massive benefits for consumers, brands, and publishers,” said Dom Bracher, VP of Product.

Snapchat has launched the Snap Holiday Market, offering immersive AR experiences from brand partners Amazon, Coca-Cola, Hollister, Under Armour, Verizon and Walmart. Snapchatters can browse products in an AR space for each brand. Snap is also offering try-on and e-commerce Lenses during the holiday shopping season.

ADVERTISING

Data platform Advocado has acquired the VEIL watermarking technology and 46 other patents from VEIL Interactive Technologies. A long-time licensee of the VEIL technology, Advocado will now integrate the watermarking capabilities into its data management platform for broadcast TV and radio, while adding advanced detection and attribution for interactive TV and gaming.

Google is reportedly in talks with potential program partners about adding AVOD channels to its YouTube TV service. The idea has been discussed with Brat TV, Vox Media and Pocket.Watch, according to The Information.

Tubi is now available on LG Smart TVs in the US, Canada, Mexico and Australia. With the addition of LG, Tubi is now distributed on 29 different platforms.

Crown Media Family Networks and Philo have reached an agreement on a multi-year partnership renewal, as Crown Media rolls out its holiday programming. “Our movies are currently leading Philo’s viewership charts, so we know there is great demand on the service for our content,” said Crown Media President & CEO Wonya Lucas. “With this renewal agreement, we look forward to continuing to entertain Philo subscribers and bringing them more of the positive, feel-good Hallmark programming they know and love.”

FAST channel generator Frequencey has partnered with video monitoring platform Interra Systems to enhance monitoring and quality assurance across Frequency’s network of linear SVOD channels. Through Interra’s ORION and ORION-OTT systems, Frequency will deploy real-time monitoring capabilities for its 24-hour IP and OTT content feeds.

With plans to develop 50 new “ad-friendly” shows for the A18-49 demo, Roku is taking pitches for scripted and unscripted series. The move is aimed at generating more ad revenue – the company sells 100% of the ads on its Roku Channel, versus 30% on content viewed on other apps on its platform.

TikTok TV has expanded its television presence. The TikTok TV app has been specifically created for a TV home-viewing experience on Samsung Smart TVs, and rolled out to Google TV, Android TV OS, and LG Smart TVs.

ODMedia has signed an agreement with European pay TV provider M7 Group to provide technical services for a range of films and TV series from several content owners, including StudioCanal, Dutch Core and VRT, for the SVOD offering of M7 Group. Under the deal, ODMedia will process content monthly to M7 Group.
