Showtime announced new docu-series Gossip Starring Cindy Adams (wt), focused on the longtime New York Post gossip columnist. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard will exec produce, with Jenny Carchman (The Fourth Estate) producing and directing. Series is slated to premiere in 2021.
CBS All Access canceled Strange Angel after two seasons. Series based on the biography Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons starred Jack Reynor.
Preemption alert: The House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on December 4 on the constitutional grounds for presidential impeachment. “We expect to discuss the constitutional framework through which the House may analyze the evidence gathered in the present inquiry,” said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler in a letter to President Trump. “We will also discuss whether your alleged actions warrant the House’s exercising its authority to adopt articles of impeachment.” Nadler invited the president or his counsel to participate in the hearing.
Retailers spent over $400 million on TV advertising in 2019 ahead of Black Friday , according to MediaRadar, a five percent increase versus the same period last year. Extra thanks goes to top ten spenders Amazon, Walmart, Target, Macy’s, Kay Jewelers, JCPenny, Best Buy, TJX Companies (TJ Max and Marshall’s), and Raymor & Flanagan. “Our deep dive discovered that spending for 2019’s Black Friday TV advertising has been highly concentrated,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO and CoFounder of MediaRadar. “Of the nearly 300 retail companies that ran ads on national TV in the first half of November, 77 percent of those dollars came from the top 20 spenders.”
Ad-supported network Bon Appetit will come pre-installed on Samsung smart TVs , part of Conde Nast’s efforts to expand the food lifestyle brand. A Bon Appetit streaming service launched in February.
Univision Chicago and The Chicago Reporter are teaming to create Latinext , a cross-newsroom, cross-platform, bilingual news team to address the information needs of the Latinx community in the Chicago region. Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions and B-17 Entertainment in association with Universal Alternative Television Studio are producing. Quibi launches April 6.

With Disney+ averaging about a million downloads daily – racking up an estimated 15.5 million in less than two weeks after its launch, reported Apptopia – and Disney generating $5 million through in-app purchases, Disney stock hit a new high of $153.22 on Tuesday (closing at $151.64). But so far, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO are unaffected by Disney+, said Apptopia: “We see download and user session trends uninterrupted from their trend lines.”
In more Disney+ news, the streamer has resumed a “Continue Watching” feature that lets viewers pause a show on their connected TV and resume playback later, including on another device. Disney+ removed the feature shortly after launch to address glitches.
By the end of 2025, 5G will have 2.6 billion subscriptions covering up to 65% of the world’s population and generating 45% of the world’s total mobile data traffic – making it the fastest developing mobile communication technology to have ever been rolled out on a global scale, according to Ericsson’s November Mobility Report. “More immersive media formats and applications are expected to become a significant factor contributing to mobile data traffic growth, as 5G networks will provide the performance needed for a good user experience,” says the report.

Ad technology company StackAdapt and video advertising platform SpotX formed a partnership focused on Connected TV inventory and audiences, aimed at enabling advertisers to reach Canadian viewers of OTT content at scale. Advertisers working with StackAdapt can now access premium inventory from more than 600 media owners, including A+E Networks, Discovery, and Pluto TV, via SpotX’s CTV network, reaching up to 44 million households across the US and Canada.
Video technology provider Kaltura announced the expansion of its Kaltura Webcasting platform. New capabilities enable anyone to become a broadcaster from their desktop, and include a central Events Hub, and Real-Time Analytics. “More organizations are searching for flexible, easy to use solutions that help cater to their diverse video communication needs,” said Dr. Michal Tsur, Kaltura Co-founder, President and General Manager – Enterprise and Learning. “Kaltura is changing the playing field by combining, interactive live and on-demand communications across multiple channels.”
190 million 5G smartphones will ship next year , estimates the International Data Corporation, 14% of the total number of all phones being shipped. Android smartphones account for 87% of overall smartphone market share, versus 13% for Apple’s iOS.

RATINGS
Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” franchise has made the net the highest-rated and most-watched cable network during Total Day and Primetime among Households, W25-54, and total viewers, excluding news and sports. Saturday’s Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays averaged a 2.6 HH rating and 2.7 million total viewers, while Sunday’s Cherished Memories: A Gift to Remember 2 drew a 2.5 HH rating and 2.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
In syndication, for the week ending November 17, Jeopardy saw a new season high 7.2 Live+SD national Nielsen, up 7% from the week before with its Tournament of Champions. Most other shows were hit by impeachment hearing preemptions and Thursday Night Football. Only one magazine was up in households from the previous week, Entertainment Tonight (2.8, up 4%), which matched its season high and tied Inside Edition (2.8, down 3%) for the category lead.
The fall finale of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy marked the series’ most-watched telecast since its season premiere eight weeks earlier, with 8.8 million viewers, and its highest-rated episode among A18-49 in six weeks with 2.2/11.
FETV (Family Entertainment Television) announced it was the fastest growing cable network in America , according to Nielsen Household Universe Estimates for December. FETV’s Universe Estimate grew by 23% from September to December, with gains largely attributable to FETV’s recent launch with Charter Spectrum. The net hit 170,844 P2+ imps in M-F 7p-12a Prime for the month in Live+3 viewing, boasting 155,510 among A50+.
The season three finale of Telemundo’s Exatlon Estados averaged 764,000 viewers among A18-49, 360,000 A18-34, and 1.9 million in total viewers Sunday night.
