IN THE NEWS

Bob Iger waves the magic wand and Disney stocks surge. The Walt Disney Co. shares rose 6.2% on Monday, after the news broke that Iger is returning to the company as CEO. He replaces his hand-picked successor, Bob Chapek, who had a bumpy tenure during tumultuous times, but had gotten a vote of confidence as recently as June, when his contract was renewed for three years. But Disney’s recent quarterly report included a $1.5 billion loss for its streaming business, and the company missed analyst’s’ expectations on both revenue and earnings per share, sending the stock down – and Chapek out the door. Iger agreed to a two-year contract

AMC CEO Adam Aron offered a big thumbs up to Bob Iger’s return to Disney. “Let me shout this from the mountain top. I have the absolute highest respect for Bob Iger,” he tweeted.

In another shakeup, Michael Bass is leaving CNN. The longtime EVP of programming shared news of his year-end departure as the network reorganizes under CEO Chris Licht. Licht wrote in a staff memo, “[Bass] has been a steady hand during some of the most turbulent times this network has faced.”

Season 31 will be Cheryl Burke’s last as a dancing pro on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” but her “Dancing” days may not be over. After announcing her departure, the dancer elaborated on her decision to leave after 26 seasons. “If I were to just talk as an athlete, a dancer and a woman, my time has been up,” she said. “I’m 38 years old.” But she teased her return in a new capacity. “There’s also another opportunity for me … but I can’t say more because nothing has been signed yet,” said Burke, who has been open about her interest in serving as a judge on the show.

Ryan Reynolds resurrected “The Walking Dead” favorites for an ad campaign. To celebrate the series finale, five ads with four characters who died over the series’ 12-year run aired through Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and AMC Networks’ Content Room. On his contribution to the cultural conversation, Reynolds said, “Ads should be fun.”

Whoopi Goldberg returned to “The View” after Covid her diagnosis. Back at the table wearing an “Over It” sweatshirt, Goldberg said, “You can get boosted within an inch of your life and then the next thing you know you got Covid again.”

Jay Leno was released from the hospital following a gasoline fire. After 10 days in the Grossman Burn Center for two surgeries and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to heal second- and near-third-degree burns to his face, hands and chest, Dr. Peter Grossman said he is “optimistic that [Leno] will make a full recovery.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

NBC is spinning the wheel with a new game show. Hosted by British comedian Michael McIntyre, the US version of “The Wheel” will feature celebrity guests who help contestants win cash prizes in a two-week takeover of the UK original show.

“No Demo Reno” was renewed for a third season. HGTV ordered 12 new episodes of the series featuring social media creator Jenn Todryk renovating homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The upcoming season is slated to premiere in summer 2023.

FilmRise acquired the distribution rights to “Hannibal” and “Hemlock Grave.” The domestic deal allows the company to distribute both programs on its branded OTT apps in the US.

Deniese Davis is getting in business with Tyler Perry Studios. With Reform Media Group, the partnership will facilitate development of scripted and unscripted TV, and feature films. This marks the second deal that Perry’s studio has with another creator, writer or producer. Perry said, “I could not be more excited to be joining forces with Deniese Davis and usher in a new era at Tyler Perry Studios, where we invite creatives to have the freedom to tell the kind of stories that they truly believe in.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Netflix’s sophomore season of “Vikings: Valhalla” will premiere on January 12. Season 3 of “Vienna Blood” will premiere on January 8 on PBS. Crime solvers Dr. Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt continue to crack mysteries in 1900s Vienna. Filmed on location in Vienna and Budapest, the series will premiere six new episodes every Sunday through February 12 at 10p.

COMING UP

Miley Cyrus and godmother Dolly Parton will co-host NBC’s “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party.” Cyrus’s co-host last year was Pete Davidson, for a show that delivered NBC’s best viewership for the holiday in the 18-49 and the 18-34 demographic since 2014.

A special on glass sculptures is headed to The Smithsonian Channel. “Master of Glass: The Art of Dale Chihuly” will debut on December 11 as part of the network’s holiday programming, “25 Days of Getaways.” With a spotlight on the glass sculptor Chihuly, the special will peer behind the glass to uncover his identity as a father, friend, partner and man with bipolar disorder.

Fran Fine returns to “The Nanny” with a special on COZI TV this Sunday. The 10-episode special, “Fran’s Favorites,” starring Fran Dresher, will highlight the star’s favorite episodes from the original series. The featured selection will include the pilot, “Hurricane Fran,” “The Bank Robbery” (starring Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Scolari) and “Where’s the Pearls?”.

“The West Wing” is streaming all weekend long. In a Thanksgiving weekend marathon on HLN, the first four seasons of the series will run from Thursday through Sunday. All seven seasons are currently available on HBO MAX, along with “A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.”

Sandi Toksvig will star in the Christmas special “Sandi Toksvig’s Tiny Christmas Challenge.” Yeti Television won the commission rights from Channel 4 for the special with the former co-host of “The Great British Bake Off.”

Mike Rowe is going back to work for a new season of “Dirty Jobs.” On December 11, Rowe will return to the Discovery Channel for a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida, to fill the shoes of a pool liner fixer, hotel soap recycler, beaver relocator and more.

SPORTS

The FIFA 2022 World Cup opening game scored 8 million viewers. The 192-minute match between Qatar and Ecuador, which went 2-0 to Ecuador, was watched by 2 million more viewers than the last World Cup opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The Iranian soccer team gave a silent protest on the pitch as the players refused to sing their national anthem at the World Cup. In solidarity with the ongoing protests over the treatment of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and allegedly murdered by Iran’s morality police for not wearing the state-mandated hijab for women in September, the national team received cheers for their silence. During the match against England, fans chanted Amini’s name and many wore shirts that read “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

Joe Lycett revealed that his money-shredding ultimatum stunt for David Beckham was fake. After Beckham failed to step down from his £150 million ambassador role for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the British broadcaster comedian shared a protest video online – seemingly shredding £10,000 in protest of Beckham’s support for the World Cup host country, which outlaws homosexuality. Lycett admitted instead of destroying the money, he had donated it to LGBTQ+ charities

Concacaf is now on TikTok. The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football will now promote the four teams competing in the FIFA World Cup 2022: Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States. With the opportunity to reach a new generation of fans across regions, the partnership with Wave Sports + Entertainment aims to cover the latest football news and updates, while reflecting the diversity of the football associations. Heidi Pellerano, chief commercial officer at Concacaf, called the TikTok launch a “no brainer” for the company. She added, “New generations are inheriting a love for football, and we are committed to offering unique, interactive and engaging content to foster that interest and passion for years to come.”

CASTING

Daniella Pineda and Eddie Cibrian will recur in season 3 of “Home Economics.” The actors will guest throughout the comedy series inspired by real-life experiences of three siblings in socioeconomic classes.

GOING GLOBAL

DreamWorks launched a children’s channel in France. The 24-hour entertainment channels are now available in 43 countries and 35 million households worldwide. Jennifer Lawlor, SVP of DreamWorks Animation International, NBCUniversal International Networks and direct-to consumer, said, “This debut in France and our 2022 launches in Latin America and Brazil build upon ongoing expansion of the channel – following on from recent launches in Africa, India and Australia.”
